My Grandad comes from Scotland... maybe thats where I get it from :rotfl:

I have to admit I am not proud to be British but it has nothing to do with the state the country is in... I think Britain is no better or worse than other country... it has its good points and it's bad... Like everywhere... Yes it has an immigration problem, but so does most of Europe... Like in our area there is a huge influx of Morrocans.. So immigration is immigration.

I never left the UK because I felt there was a problem there or that the grass was green over here... I moved because I couldn't afford childcare and work in the UK but didn't want to live off benefits, and my parents lived here and offered free childcare and a chance to get out of the council estates, which no one can deny, in London are rather dire.

I am more embarrassed to be British because of the way a lot of British people act in foreign countries. I remember getting groped once when in town during New years once over here.. .and the bloke turned around and said it was because all British girls got drunk and wanted sex  Plus a lot of British people tend to go mental, get drunk, shout abuse at residents, puke up in the street.... I hate summer here for that reason. Also a lot of British people come here, complain about the Spaniards and the system, refuse to learn even a few simple frases in a language, which in all honesty isn't that difficult... yet refuse to go back to England because it's crap too.... and that to me seems hypocritical and I hate hypocritical people. I know not every Brit is like that... I'm not for example... but its what other people think of British people and well sometimes you get embarrassed to be associated with that... I think anyone with any decency would.

But before I start people shouting, don't live in the UK then etc... I can't say I haven't thought about returning to the UK, as I said, its not all that bad, there are many things I miss, but home is where the heart is and my family are here so I will be staying. I will also be changing my nationality to Spanish too.. but you have to live here for 10 years before you can do that. I think I consider myself more European than British, because I don't really blend into the British culture very well... or I could just be weird.. I'm not sure...

BTW I will always love my cuppa tea... :rotfl:

I wasn't going to post this but hey its an open debate. The Spanish are one of the worse countries in the world for animal cruelty so the next time someone slags off British girls for getting drunk and everything else tourists do I would remind them of the appalling way they treat animals especially bulls in the bull fighting rings and tell them to take a good look at their own issues before slagging off the British. Bullfighting has never been and will never be a sport in this country. That makes me proud to be British!!!!!!

I am the same. Since 1997 and devolution there are too many injustices in what is left of the union for me to support it. The west lothian question, barnett forumla, foundation hospitals, free presecriptions, and no universtiy fees for some members of the union and not for others, to name just a few.
I am English.

I'm kinda dissappointed in some posts demonising immigrants. Some do abuse the system and blah blah as do some british people. There not the source of every problem! They don't get all this stuff free and 5* accomodation, please show me where, thats just ridiculous.

LOL I swear some people never read my post properly... :rotfl: ;)

Thats why I said...

But the problem when people makes swathing statements such as the above about any country in particular... Spain may be cruel to animals over here.. but abortion is only legal to 12 weeks n cases of rape, deformed baby, or danger to the mother's life or mental health. Where is the UK its legal to abort babies till 24 weeks just because... Britain may have issues with flying their flag but it is one of the most diverse countries in the EU...

As I said... No country is better than the other... You point me out a perfect country.. I just feel embarrassed sometimes when I see British people acting the way they do and then people think the same of me... :( Thats just me though. :)

I'm actually much prouder of my Scottish roots than my English ones.

The comparisons you have made are not valid to me because of my opinions. I don't agree with abortion of any kind.

Good to talk about it though and share thoughts. I'm glad we can do that!

If your living in an area highly concentrated with immigrants and you feel intimidated, its not the immigrants who really control where there going to be housed. The fact that immigrants are usually put in and around particular area's is not by accident. Sometimes i feel intimidated walking around in an area of just one race, whether white, black or asian but i dont have any negative feelings towards that race.

I Do Live In An Area Highly Concentrated With Immigrants and Its Not Them Being Here Thats Intimidating, Its The Fact That They Scowl & Shout Abuse and Look To The Floor At Me & Snort When I Walk Past. Thats Intimidating.

Im Not Talking About EVERY Immigrant Obviously As Every Person Is An Individual Whatever Race, I Can Merly Comment On My Area & My Life. This Has Been My Experience. There Is Some Kind Of "Gang War" Going On & So A LOT Of Immigrants Walk The Town Glaring & Verbaly Abusing People. Its Daunting and I Can Assure You That It Is Most Deffinately Not a Safe Place To Be Living So I Tend Not To Shop There Unless Nessasary. Of Course There Are Others Who Cause Trouble Aswell, Welsh/English/Scottish- Whatever... But I Can Only Comment On My Issues & This Is The Issue In My Area.

I'm confused...(yes... again... :rotfl: ) Does that make any comparisons not valid then because I don't believe in bull fighting or the subject at hand?

I have to agree with Carly though... I lived in south London and there were lots of immigrants there and I often felt intimidated... I know not every immigrant is like that, just like not every Brit is the way I described above... but you can't help feel intimidated sometimes..

I'm intimidated by any group of people. Boys/girls young/old of any race. I'm more intimidated when they are speaking in a different language beacuse i have no idea what they are saying.

I think that as English people we have a lot to be thankful for. Im not saying that our country is perfect by any stretch of the imagination but the reason that we have high immigration etc etc is because we provide people who live here with the tools to get the most from their lives. Its only natural that other nationalities see that and want to live that way too. I would much rather live in a country that people want to come and live IN rather than escape FROM. You can go to certain countries (like Saudi Arabia etc) and hardly ever see anybody other than their own nationality but you have to ask yourself why that is. Its usually because they are opppressed and live in such harsh regimes that they dont let anyone in, and its difficult to get out.
As women I think we should count ourselves lucky that we get things in this country that we take for granted that others just dont get. Everything from the vote, to a free health service to a culture that allows us to express ourselves as individuals. Im quite sure that if we didnt get all of these things we wouldnt have the immigrants coming to want to have it too! And I for one would much rather have those priviledges and share them with others then not have them at all.
As English people we are given the tools to make what we want of our lives. We have access to free, good quality education and things like grants to kick start us and enable us to make successes of ourselves.
I agree that our national pride is diluted but I think that has a lot to do with the fact that we are all so good at being negative at picking out the bad stuff rather than celebrating the good.
Our country may be far from perfect but I think that if we look at the things we take for granted and our standard of living and most important, the tools we are given to make the best lives for ourselves, we should count ourselves quite lucky. I know I do! :D

No it just makes that comparison not valid because to me there is no comparison between the two in my mind. I don't believe that all spanish people love bull fighting no more than I believe all British people go to spain and makes arses of themselves.

i am English, I was born in Manchester which is in England.

however i think the country has gone down the pan with regards to immigration, if in England u arent allowed to celebrate the English team in the football league or celebrate xmas or St Georges day cos it offends ethnic MINORITES then wtf is goin on?????

feel free to tell me off for bein unreasonable

 I have just read all 11 pages of this.

IMO whats wrong with England is that people dont get punished for what they do. I think that if people were held responsible for their actions, then we would be a more respectful nation.

Like whoever said about teachers gettin attacked by school kids, its not helped by the fact that the kids dont get punished. Who cares if they are grounded/suspended? Not them and IMO too many families aren't bothered either. We would be mortified if our kids behaved like that but unfortunately lots of people aren't.

If prisons were harsher, excuses were less and people were better educated then :cheer:

Hi, don't want to tell anyone off for being unreasonable mummykay. However where I live - people fly the flag when the country is in a major sporting event (ok mainly the george flag for football or rugby) . In fact there were loads of flags up a couple of weeks ago because of the rugby.

I do believe that as a country the majority of us still celebrate christmas - if not the supermarkets and shops are f@@ked as that is all the stuff they have in them at the moment.

I work in a school with lots of ethnic diversions and we still do christmas activites and have a christmas performace (it is a non-faith school) I also will and have received cards and presents at christmas from muslim children who are equally delighted with the things they make and the cards they receive.

I think the media instills this mad idea of political correctness gone wrong but from my own experience that is just not true!!!!

This country is great - it has some wonderfully talented people in it and people with true spirit and determination (think Lewis Hamilton, the rugby team etc. As for other talent think JK Rowling, I believe we have one of the best army's in the world - I read yesterday that are universitys are improving. )

And my last waffle on the matter is if you want to look for someone to blame for the state of some of the kids today don't blame the immigrants BLAME THE PARENTS

well thats what i don't understand! surely we need to keep some traditions because other ethnic groups get to keep theirs.
