Split post re: UK going downhill

Someone should re-name this thread *the immigrant and muslim bashing thread* first of all i for one couldnt care less whether my hairdresser has a headscalf on or not why do you need to see her hair for???? i think its totally wrong that she should be refused a job just because of her religious beleifs. if a non muslim turned up with a hair band or bandana on that covered most of their heads nobody would say a word. people are scared of things they know nothing about and i personally dont think its a waste of time going to court i think its great that people are standing up for their religion and there rights.

On the immigration subject which i feel particularly strong about how can some of you say that they get 5* accomodation and houses and benefits do any of you actually have first hand experience of this or do you just beleive everything you read in the paper. do you think people love to leave there families and countries to come to this country and be greeted by hostile rude people like some people on here.

my oh came here 5 years ago from iraq for him it was a decision between stayin and dying or making the scariest loneliest journey of his life at just 17 years old to try and find refuge from a war that america and britain started. he didnt get any accomodation if any of you bothered to find out you dont get anything until you have a legal status in the uk as in indefinite leave to remain or right to stay for 4 years.

he worked 7 days a week and had to live in a small damp dark room above the garage where he worked with no food or money as all his money went on the rent. he now has inefinite to stay and will have a british passport next year and we now live with his sister and her husband (a dentist and a gp who pay there taxes) and he speaks perfect english and is a qualified mechanic and pays tax he has never claimed benefits.

have any of you had to comfort your oh while they sit and cry distraught that they had to leave their parents and siblings behind in a war stricken country where from one day to the next he doesnt know if they will live or die.??

i hope to god that there is not a war in this country one day when were all dead and buried and our children are left here. how would you feel if your child went to another country to seek refuge and were treated the way you are talking about these people like they are parasites. in my opinion this country is going down the pan because of ignorant selfish people who cant accept change and other cultures. there is good and bad in every country i am proud to be british for no reason other then that i can step outside my front door without the fear of being bombed or lie in my bed at night without the fear of being raped. we have some great people and some terrible people but the great people wouldnt be great without the terrible people to compare them to.

i dont expect anyone to change there opinions i just want people to show some compassion and put yourself in their shoes for a while.

I say as long as immigrants work then thats good, they are entitled to the things we are, if they pay taxes and dont just claim benifits while doing nothing, its bad enough british peop,le doing it never mind anyone else 8)

i agree although i think its ok to claim benefits for 6 months or so whether your an immigrant or british if you are actively looking for work and really need it to survive.

fair enough if u dont mind the tax u pay goin on a sad ass case like that but i would actually prefer mine goin on the trials for rapists, murderers and paedophiles to get them locked up but whatever, each to their own

But to be fair some cultures actually believe in their religion and by asking her to remove her head scarf might not mean jack to us but it means the world to that girl whether me or you or anyone else likes it or not. She has every right to that job if she is good hair dresser and by refusing her that chance she has been discriminated against. If she wins the case it will be a benchmark for all other people who are discriminated against because of their beliefs and cultures and disabilities for that matter. That manager should have made allowances for that girl in exactly the same way employers have to provide wheelchair access to their premises and hearing loops for deaf employees. And when I say some cultures who actually believe in their religion I am refering to the countless "christians" who get their kids christened then never go to church after. Hypocrites in my eyes.

Lou :)

Hmmm I have agreed with your other posts Lou, and if you have read mine you will see that I am very open to having a multi cultural country and not against immigration etc persay. However, what I will say is that I do think that we show signs of political correctness gone mad and i think that this is an example of that. I am sure that there are plenty of hairdressers etc who would employ the lady whose policies on image are not on the level that the hairdressers in question is. I think we have to bare in mind that although we live in a multi cultural society, we are still "England" and our predominant fashions do not involve headscarfs etc. If I go to India etc then I would expect to have to follow their culture and beliefs and wear a headscarf and not wear a skirt above the knee etc, I think that people living in this country should at least have an awareness and respect of our own culture and not just expect that they can water down every aspect of our culture by playing the race card.
Any organisation caters to its customers. I would suggest that the majority of the type of customer that frequents the hairdressers in question dont wear headscarves. My friend is afro caribbean and has afro hair. She goes to an afro hairdressers and all the hairdressers are of that ethnic persuasion. I dont feel discriminated against because they have no white hairdressers. Its just one of those things. I think we have to be careful about what is racist and what is political correctness gone mad. Im fairly convinced that this is a case of the latter.

Its true what you say about respecting other cultures and yes if you went to India you would be expected to wear a skirt below the knee but if you had a religious belief that meant you wanted to wear that skirt above the knee would you go against your beliefs and not wear it just to please everyone else around you? I hope you know what I mean! lol And believe me there are plenty of western girls in India that walk around with next to nothing on which is quite disrespectful. You don't have to follow their beliefs when in India you just have to show respect which is exactly what ignorant people don't show other cultures in this country and this hair dressers is a classic example.

But if your saying that Westerners in India wearing short skirts is disrespectful (which I totally agree with) then surely the lady in question suing the hairdressers is disrespectful because she is expecting a hairdresser to change her whole company policy because of one persons beliefs? I dont expect India to change their policy on female dress because my own beliefs mean I think I should wear what I like, so why should businesses who build a reputation based on image change theirs? (This is getting complicated!! Lol)
As I said before, if she was going for an office job or sommat then fair enough, but things like hairdressers - well their business can be be made or broken on image so it doesnt matter if its a head scarf that goes against that image or a girl with a really bad hair do or whatever, its just that this particular business does not have it within its policy. If you look at it from another angle, this could be pretty dangerous because if the law allows people to continually sue etc for matters like this one then there is a danger that people who are not qualified to get the job get it because employers are scared they will be called racist.[/quote:318mkf9q]

But the whole point is thats its this girls religion! Its not our religion to wear short skirts! Its not an issue to you its just a"headscarf" but it actually means something to this girl. Why can't people respect that? Its beyond me it really is.

Hey slow down there a minute and be careful what you say. My name is put to this thread and I am certainly NOT "immigrant or muslim bashing" and I resent you suggesting otherwise. If you want to make your point against comments that have been made don't mouth off at the whole thread, quote certain people you agree or disagree with like the rest of us have. We have taken time to reply to eachother and discuss this so don't barge onto the thread and tar us all with the same brush!!!! I understand you feel passionately about this subject, good for you I couldn't agree more with you, but I am NOT a racist and if you read back at my comments I have made the point that British people get housing and benefits the same as immigrants do and I feel strongly in favour of the girl that has been discrimintaed against.

i think it's the amount everyone is writing, and the passion in everyones opinions! its great lol

I think the vast majority of people have a problem with ILLEGAL immigrants. I feel sorry for genuine asylum cases as they all do seem to get tarred with the same brush.

My OH is an immigrant too, (from South Africa) I haven't been offended by any comments I've read here because I know people are not referring to people like him, he has also worked since day one and has never been given anything extra like council accommodation, or benefits or anything.

Do you know what I think it is urchin, racist, old fashioned, prejudiced views that people have inherited from their parents who have in turn inherited it from their parents and have grown up with the same views and have not stopped for a moment to question what their own thoughts based on their own life experiences and opinions. I don't mean anyone in particular on this thread because we haven't gone deep enough, I just mean people in general who are racist and prejudiced.

I'm a muslim, and i wear a headscarf, AND I do hair. And i'm flippin good at it. Just coz i doctor was sick, you wouldnt think he was a crap doctor? A dentist with bad teeth? A nanny with no kids? Does it matter? NO

Its the most stupidest thing in the world to think that a muslim women, who has had 2 fight for the right to wear a headscarf in other countries is gonna take it off for a job! I've been turned down for jobs and i'm almost sure its because of the way i dress. One business said straight up you have to take it off.

And for the people on this forum who wouldnt get there hair done because the hairdresser has a headscarf on. 1st if a headscarf doesnt mean you got bad hair underneath, and when you go to a hairdresser, you say "i'm only gonna get my hair done by a hairdresser has got the kind of hairstyle that i'd like on my head"???????? I didnt think so. Its IGNORANCE, and NORROW-MINDEDNESS. And if thats how you think, your gonna rub it off off you children and we'll just get a britain full of more bigots which does us no good.

My brother in law is trying to get a visa to come here from Niger, he was denied it and my sisters going for an appeal. They believe her relationship is fake, even though shes just giving birth to her child? Coming over here is not easy, for anyone.

Good for you! I''m so glad you have posted that. It is ignorance and narrow mindedness you are right. Its what I've been saying all along.

Lou

At the risk of being narrow minded etc, I wouldn't go to a dentist who had bad teeth, wouldn't take fitness advice off a fat person, and we ALL had plenty to say about Clare Vertity who has no kids.

Not sure the relevance to a religious headscarf but just thought I'd say.

Im not sure that I saw anyone say people who wear headscarfs cant do hair and I didnt see anyone say they wouldnt get thier hair done by someone who was wearing one??? ....but I did see people discussing about wether or not the lady at the hairdresssers was right or wrong for not employing a lady with a headscarf ...in which I could see valid points from both sides tbh.

Yeah thats true I think. I don't have time right now to read the whole thread back, I'm going out! I do agree with the point she is making though.

I apologize if i offended anyone i in no way meant to tarr everyone with the same brush if you notice i said some people not everyone and i didn't call anyone racist as i dont think any of the comments were racist.

i didnt want to quote anyone on here because i dont agree with lots of peoples opinions not just one. however opinions are formed on experiences and people on here havnt experienced what i have and i havnt experienced what they have therefore i havnt targetted people

also i was not necessarily talking about people on here i was talking more in general. and as for tarring with the same brush well thats exactly what some people have been doing about immigrants.

i am very passionate about this subject and may have gone a bit OTT last night but it quite upset me to read this thread. i was trying to give another side of the picture that everyone was painting and reading some of the other opinions i fail to see how i was "barging in" with mine just because i am not a popular member of the forum i cant give an opinion??
