SPD Support Thread

Heya guys x was diagnosed with SPD on Monday by my consultant, very early to w having problems I guess but I'm having a lot of problems with my hips x I have been referred for physio just waiting for my appointment to come through x big hugs to all your ladies x awful think to have x

Sorry to hear you've been diagnosed hun :( Its not very pleasant but I've found that the physio has helped me learn how to manage it. For me sleeping is the worst as I wake up an hour after I've dropped off in agony on my one hip and have to switch sides all night....I guess the broken sleep is good practice for when bubs arrives, lol! I've bought a full body pillow which does help.

Hope you get on well with the physio xxx

I think I may have this, my whole pelvis area is in so much pain when I walk, I have to walk so slowly and I'm literally waddling, I can always hear the tutters behind me when I'm commuting! I feel I like I have bowling ball down the front of my knickers and a piece of hard metal wedged on the top of my butt cheeks (sorry tmi) I've been to my gp twice firstly he said I had a urine infection so I took some antibiotics then I went back as it hadn't cleared and he just said its part of pregnancy and it's just my pelvis widening??

I'm struggling more and more at work than at home as I sitting for long periods is painful and getting up takes forever! Ive just moved house so I need to register with another gp and I don't want to just be fobbed off again, do any of you ladies have similar symptoms so I can suggest it to them?

Thanks xxxxxxx

It's just like you've described hun so sounds like you have it. Could you speak to your midwife about it?

Other symptoms I get include pain down the insides of my legs. Pain in my tailbone & buttocks (really hurts when sitting or lying for long periods) and on days where it's at it's worst my legs/hips click out of place and I've had sciatica where my one leg goes from underneath me. I've also had shooting pain up my groin.

I know what you mean about waddling around. I've been doing this and I have no visible bump so must look very strange to others! xx

That's exactly how I am, it never occured to me that it might be SPD until the middle of last night. But the pain at night (which is really the only time I'm effected - so maybe this is different) is just so much, and it's so tiring waking up just because i need to turn over, and when i do manage it, both hips are bruised, so it still hurts! And last night i'd taken co-codemol for other pain, and that didn't help it!

Yh I need to speak to midwife, I mentioned other at my16 week check and she also blamed it on 'normal stretching' my next appt is in January so I'll speak to her then.

I was waddling before my bump too so I totally understand!!

Can I ask how you ladies are sleeping at night?!! I can get two hours, wake up, turn over, get nearly two hours, then half an hour at the most. The pain is so much :( Seeing midwife next week, but got 6 nights to get through first :(

Sleep? What's that?

Like you a few hours then wake up in pain so have to sit up. sometimes manage to nod off sitting up but not for long.

To be honest I'm not sleeping well at all but think its a mixture of everything, mind is racing ATM and the pain in combination just isn't doing well for sleep. I've been offered a support pillow for between my legs when I'm asleep off a friend of mine who had SPD in her pregnancy and she has said that a gym ball helps? My hips seem to click a lot this last week and the aching when leaning on one side is horrid x I have some days which are better than others, is this normal? Xxxx hugs to all you ladies xxxx

Hey girls I think I have SPD :( saw my useless midwife yesterday and she said it might be but gave no help what so ever! Im in so much pain on my pubic bone that seems to be getting worse day by day :( It hurts when I walk :( I've got so much to do and places tk go but worried I'll make it worse by walking too much :( crying in pain hate this

:( you need to make an appointment with your GP and ask for a referral for physio or see your main consultant if you have an appointment comin up soon? My consultant could see the pain I was in moving so I didn't need to ask for the referral she offered it. I was crying last night my hip was that bad :( struggling to move about properly at all :( x sending all of you big hugs <3 xxx

In my stupidity i assumed my physio appt would b sooner rather than later. Referal was 3 weeks ago n first app they can offer is 10th Jan :0( x

Hiya everyone. I think I'm suffering with this :(

My pubic bone hurts, is sore, feels hot and inflamed, right down the middle. Even walking hurts sometimes.

I mentioned it to MW who just said it will get worse, then saw GP as paracetamol doesn't really help, he was just as useless.

I have looked up cocodamol, and it says its safe to take in pregnancy. Is this true and is anyone else taking it if it gets bad?

I've had pubic pain with previous pregnancies, but not this early and painful.
I am expecting twins, do you think that could have something to with it.

Thanks, Claire :)

I was given co codemol when I went to hospital with bad bump pain, and midwife said to take for the spd too. Only take it at night to help sleep. The hospital did say that if I needed to buy some from the pharmacy hubby would have to buy it for himself..! As they won't sell it to pregnant women (but antenatal hospital dept will prescribe!)

Has anyone given birth with this? I get cramps in my hips when, um, sleeping with oh iykwim! So I'm wondering what stirrups is going to do!!

Iv heard that some ladies that have spd arent able to get their legs in the stirrups hun! I know it is so painful...I have to struggle in to bed...then slide a pillow between them...when I wake for a wee I have to physche myself up to move lol...as it hurts! :( xxxx

No way in hell would I be able to use stirrups even without SPD - I'm going to kneel on floor or try and walk her out. Let gravity help - will be less painful hun.

Well, I'm hopping to be able to use the pool for as much as possible again, but you never know if they'll be free! I reckon I'll need more than a few hours in g&a this time round!

I tried to go painkiller free last night, big mistake!! Spent between 3-4 in agony, eventually gave in and took some, 5 they started working at the same time Sophia woke up (and woke the cat up!!). When I woke up after bringing her into our bed this morning my hips were throbbing, so working from home today!!

the stirrups pull the pelvis apart causing more pain for the mother so they prefer u to be up on ur knees with legs same width of pelvis or on all fours for giving birth.

i was at midwife yesterday and got told i have another 6 weeks to wait for any help for my spd by physio and also got to wait till the 11th next month to see the dr as im high risk so that she can see about stronger painkillers. but if i figure if i wait that long i may as well just deal with it till the birth at the end of april and just stick to paracetamol as im not happy about taking stronger meds any way. now if i can only find someone to do my dishes for me that wud be great lol ive stacked them ready and now i need to rest as in lots of pain lol think its going to take me all day to do them lol. i cant even hobble to the corner shop to get juice as i can only just make it to the end of my street and considering im the last house on the street thats not a good thing lol.

hope ur all finding ways to cope

Oh my goodness, no way would I be able to give birth like that! Tried it with Sophia but was far too tired! I'm lucky that I'm not as bad as a lot of you ladies!
