I think you sort of forget how sore it is, if you remembered you'd never get pregnant again!! My biggest fear at the moment is being induced, as they didn't believe I was in labour and gave me no pain relief. It's a thoroughly shit hospital and that's not the accepted standard, so don't worry if you are induced ladies.
Part of mine was that I was exceptionally quick - 3.5 hours from first contraction to holding him in my arms, first inductions don't normally happen like that, even when there's been a previous labour!
So I do fear that pain, but he ain't coming out without some degree of pain from me so I've got to get my big girl pants on.
I think having an idea of what you'd like is fine if it helps you (it really helped me), but I strongly recommend going into it with an open mind, and with no expectations at all. Take the pain relief you need as you need it, and don't beat yourself up over tearing, episiotomy, assistance, or a c-section. How you give birth is irrelevant, the fact is that you gave birth
Also, have a look into delayed cord clamping if you haven't already ladies. It's amazing!
