*** Weaning Thread *** (Stage two yet?)

We didn't do to well today :(

Lola really doesn't seem bothered about her food and would rather just have boobie. This moring i gave her a rusk for her breakfast but she just kept throwing it so i mixed it with some milk and she refused to open her mouth for it and laughed everytime i took the spoon away from her

At lunch time i tried her with carrot and swede (homemade) but she had 2 spoons and then wouldn't have and more. I then tried her with a jar of taste of apple and no she didn't want that either :(

We had a chicken salad for tea. Lola didn't seem hungry so i just tried her with what we had. She had a few licks/sucks of a bit of tomato then just played with the rest until i offered her some aple rice cakes (she ate 2 :cheer: )

OH then started worrying that she hadn't had any solids so tried her with an apricot petits filous and she ate nearly a full pot but wouldn't have anything else we tried.

I'm not really sure what to do with her though she seems to be eating less solids everyday and just wants more breastmilk.

Has anyone got any advice?

Sorry Lola's Mummy, Have'nt got any advice. My LO decided not to have her Carrots for lunch yesterday (which she usually gobbles up) so had to make a some apple and banana burst cereal because I knew she was hungry and just being a diva. I asked my Mam if there was anything differently i should do and she said no, Jess probably just did'nt fancy it.
Is Lola teething at the mo?

I have no real advice, Jack sometimes has days where he just doesn't seem interested. I just keep giving him his lunch etc same time everyday and he seems to be getting better. The days when he won't eat what i'm giving him I tend to give him extra finger foods as he's ok as long as he can feed himself :)

Bit discouraged with the whole weaning thing at the moment. Good thing is that she is a good eater (so far). Whatever I have given her, she has eaten. But I don't really get how much to feed her etc. She isn't the smallest thing in the world :) so I don't want to over feed her. But I don't get why she seems so hungry all the time. She eats quite a lot of food at each meal time and should be able to reduce her milk but she still seems to need it a lot.

Eg. Today at lunch time she had apple, pear and banana puree - a full weaning bowl of it and stopped eating when she was full. But then 2 hours later she was crying and couldn't sleep. Not like her. Tried everything and then gave her some milk. Drank it and went to sleep.

In the night she still wakes for milk. I have tried to not give it her, or give water, dummy etc but she stays awake until she has had milk. hmmmm.

Quite a lot of pressure from the clinic to reduce milk and increase food with the goal of only one bottle in am and one in pm. Makes sense but maybe she isn't ready yet. She drinks about 700ml in 24 hours. Most of it in evening and night.

Just don't want her to massive! Wonder when she will start to drop the night feeds?
Are your LOs having milk in the day time?
The plan I was given only has 1 bottle on waking and then the next one in the pm:

6am approx - bottle
9am - baby rice with puree (I give porridge and fruit puree)
12 - vegetable puree - water to drink
3pm - fruit puree with 3 corn cereal
5pm - a few spoons of baby rice
7pm - bottle

I don't like this plan so have been doing my own thing but feel a bit clueless tbh.

Hey newmum,

I started weaning DD at 6 months and very very quickly she went from one to two to three meals a day - and I just started with lumpy mashy foods and finger foods as I was too lazy to puree! Anyway, she was still taking 5/6 breastfeeds during the day and began eating more and more at each mealtime so I introduced puddings (fruit puree, rice pudding, org yoghurt etc) about a week ago and ever since then she has slept through the night! AND now only takes 4 breastfeeds a day (two longer feeds and a mid morning and mid afternoon snack feed).

My instinctive advice, just from my own recent experience, for you would be to wait until she's 6 months+, then give her more 'meal' type things - i.e. rather than a fruit puree for lunch, give her houmous and a breadstick, then the fruit puree and then for tea something with fish or chicken and veg/tatties etc (what I've done the past week is in this thread - I make veg and potato purees then add some of our fish or chicken or mince from our tea that we're cooking, that makes it much easier.) then a pudding like yoghurt or fruit puree or a bit of banana or some whole blueberries etc.

I hope that makes sense. Maybe a fruit puree isn't filling her up enough as a complete meal? I worry that I'm overfeeding DD, but she's still following the 9th/25th centile and not piling on weight so I think she's fine. I'm happy with her progress to date.

Thanks for your PMs - I haven't replied as you know you found the answer elsewhere - anything else I can help with, please let me know! I think PLUM baby porridge is the business - four x supergrains!

well we tryed Imogen on the pork dinne hipp today and didnt like it as it was too lumpy so i doscontinued feeding it before she :puke: like last time.

but shes had some toast and bits today.

This may have already been asked but I don't think Ryan's getting enough milk...

He has...

1 BF at 6/7am
Solid breakfast food at 10am with sips of water
Solid lunch food at 2pm with sips of water
Solid dinner food at 6pm with sips of water
1 Bottle, 200ml (7oz) at 630pm

I read on a site that they should still be having 500/600ml milk a day. What do I do? Decrease his food? That doesn't seem right...

He's doing ok on the diet he's on, he's happy and healthy, but if he needs more milk...

:(

I was told as a pint a day leckershell, but as hes having a breastfeed you cant really tell can you, is he taking a long time to nurse?

He has a great diet - dont change it! if he will take why not give one more breastfeed or bottle.Just to put your mind at rest.

Newmum, don't have any advice but think Valentine had given some good advice

Shell - I was just about to post this today, Jack today has had:

8am - 7oz bottle

9am - porridge

2pm!! - Dinner, finger food and a 6oz

5pm - tea

then at 7pm he'll have his night time bottle of 8oz.

Only thing that worries me is that he's not eating all of his food, i'm really unsure what portion sizes he should be having  so now I worry if he has enough milk :wall:

He's having a lot less BF than he used to, often refusing second side. Nat told me to remember he does have formula in with his baby rice for breakfast, which I had forgotton about, that's probably another 50ml or so.. he just seems a lot less interested in his BF. He's well up for his evening bottle and gulps it down (falls asleep after 200ml) though.

SC - have you seen the weaning bowls, i assume you have... Ryan has near enough a full bowl of baby rice in the morning... a jar for lunch and a jar for dinner followed by milk.

I'm going to baby clinic on Tuesday to weigh him (he's already having his feet sticking out of the carseat so I want to know how much he weighs), and I know HV's aren't the be all and end all of knowledge but I'll see what they have to say re: meal sizes and milk. I was supposed to be having a "weaning" visit but they're a bit late for that now  luckily I have a food diary (I record how much and when he eats, in a appointment diary) so I'll take that with me see what they say.

MrsT I do try and give him another BF between lunch and dinner sometimes, but he doesn't really seem up for it and maybe has one side before losing interest.

I think he sounds fine Leckershell, but if he dont want it he dont want it, i guess you cant force him! I wouldnt worry too much.

Ive had the opposit today with Imogen, hardly any food. She wanted mummy cuddles, kisses and lots of milk. She had 3 x 9oz bottles. So need to worry anout her milk intake today!

Leckershell - will he take anything in between his meals? or maybe you can give him some before one of them and then finish off with the food? Don't really know - sure you have already thought about that. Just what I had tried when I tried to stop LO from feeding at night by giving her more in the day. He is so clever - saw your video of him pulling himself up. :)

Thanks Valentine - one of my friends said a similar thing to you too, saying that at first she pureed the life out of everything but with her second child she gave her pretty much the same as they eat and more lumpy too. She eats better than the first but that could just be the child.
L0 is 6 months at the end of the week so I guess I can make some changes now and find what works for her. Will try those things you suggested.

Only thing that worries me is that he's not eating all of his food, i'm really unsure what portion sizes he should be having so now I worry if he has enough milk

Hi  , Is he generally quite happy through the day? My friend's doctor said a simple thing but quite helpful ' a baby will not starve itself or overfeed itself. They will soon let you know when they need something.' I try to follow my LO lead - if she starts playing with food, or closing her mouth or turning away I stop straight away because I don't want to push her natural appetite limit. So I think your cute little boy will tell you when he has had enough and it's ok.

Glenn has settled into this routine.....
6-6.30 7 oz bottle
8-8.30 Porridge and fruit puree
11ish 6 oz bottle
1.30ish full jar dinner and half jar pudding, sips of juice
3ish a 5oz bottle
5-5.30 full jar dinner and half jar of pudding, sips juice
7pm 6oz bottle
Bed.
I was getting worried he was eating too much when i first started him on solids but i think he was just excited to be tasting stuff so thats why he wanted to try allsorts but he has found what he likes now and has settled nicely and i am pleased with the above i think its about right.

I know i may live to regret saying vthis in the future but I'm not sure if Jess is having too much milk. This was her day yesterday, which is almost typical.

6am 15 mins Breastfeed (she only stopped a 4am BF a couple of days ago, hopefully it will last)

8:45am-9am 8oz Bottle

12noon vegetables pureed, i would say its about same amount as a jar with 7oz milk and few sips of water

3ish 7oz Bottle

5pm About half a pot of Frutpura (she usually has fresh fruit puree but was hectic here but she took about the same as usual) and few sips of water.

7ish Straight after her bath she has a 8oz bottle.

Our HV was out last Wednesday for Jess's 6 months check which went well , i mentioned how much milk she was having and told her she has'nt dropped any (she was still waking at 4am then) and she said it's okay. But I think she should be having more solids at tea time. Do you think I should cut back the 3ish feed to about 6oz or try bringing it forward a bit?
How do you all cook your meat for LO? because I'm going to start her on some in next couple of days.
sorry for long post

Newmum - thanks for that, thats what i've been doing, just stopping when he starts playing or ignoring me lol. I think i'll continue with that. He's gaining weight well so sure everything is fine.

Rach it sounds like LO is doing brill with weaning :cheer:

Babyroo - I was worried about this when I first started weaning, Jack was having 5 8oz bottles a day and I mentioned to HV I thought was a lot and should I cut one out. She told me no he would do it himself but 9 months approx. Well I ignored her lol, obviously I would never make him go hungry but at dinner time he used to have an 8 oz bottle. All I did was offer him solids and water. and although there was a bottle on standby he never seemed to want it. Now we are down to 4 8oz bottles a day but I think he's about to drop another as he doesn't drink one of them. Gonna make for few more days but if not taking going to leave that one.

I dont know whether Maddison is eating enough per day or not, all your LO's seem to be eating more. This is her typical day:-

8am - 7oz bottle
10am - fruity breakfast (about a heaped tablespoon worth)
12pm - 7oz bottle
2pm - half a jar of fruit puree
4pm - 7oz bottle
5pm - half a jar of solids dinner
7pm - 7oz bottle

She wont eat any more solids than this at mo, isnt interested in finger foods and not interested in water or juice. How do you give them water? Maddison has a sippy cup but refuses it :( She doesnt seem hungry and she still sleeps solidly from 7pm - 8am. Should I be doing anything differently?

Hi Snuggle,
I think once they eat about 125g of food they start to drop a bottle or cut down on milk. If you want to get her to eat more, you could maybe make the lunch time her 'bigger ' meal and give her the food first and milk after. She will probably find she has filled herself up with the food and not need as much milk.
I did that with my LO for lunch time. Gave her the food then fussed around getting her milk ready so by the time I gave it her she had digested a little and then didn't want as much.
have to go - LO shouting!
be back

I think this thread shows that all our babies are different - but all of them seem happy so we must be doing well! I know I've looked at some threads and thought 'Oh god they're doing something different than me' but we will all have our own ways and the fact that we think about it shows that we all care and are trying our best.

Dylan is still having loads to eat/drink, sometimes I question if I'm giving him too much but often he cries in the afternoon and that lets me know that he needs bf. I don't think I can really up his portions just now because he eats until he's stuffed at each sitting. Most of the time he sleeps right through but recently I've been letting him sleep with me coz I'm waiting on getting the cotbed up (and I haven't chosen what bedding to use yet!) and I feel he shouldn't be in his crib as he can sit up on his own.

Today this is what he ate:

7am - bf
8am - bowl full of baby cereal with EBM & chopped up mango, plum & banana. Toast with dairylea (half a slice)
9am - 7oz EBM
11.30am - 7oz formula
1.30pm - homemade sweet potato & red pepper soup with bread to dip in. Slices of mango to hold & try to eat!
3.30pm - 6oz formula
5.30 - chicken with sweetcorn and potatoes. Chopped up fresh fruit
7.15 - bf

All I seem to do is feed him.....maybe I should increase his portion size because I think he should be dropping at least the 11.30 feed now

We've been doing a bit better with the food over the past 2 days :cheer:

Today Lola has had rusk with EBM for breakfast, at lunch time she had a slice of toast and a yogurt then for dinner she had some pasta and some mango puree. She also had 7 BF's :D

I have no idea what was going on with her last week but just hope she keeps it up :)

Hope everyone else is doing ok!

Hi all, I've decided it's time to join this thread ;)

Alex is now happily having 1 meal (jar) a day, but if I try and give him any more than that he won't have it.

Still never mind, he's a right chunk so I figured I'm not going to push him. Whenever he's ready I guess. He's obviously not starving *shrugs*

Other than that he's purely on breastmilk.
