September - time to consider flu jabs!!!

Glad u have girls :)

If our experience stops others going through the same thing then at least her death was not totally in vain :(

What a personal and brutally honest post, thanks for sharing your devastating experience xx

I have mine booked for 28th October and after reading your story about how devastating flu can be I'm glad I've booked to have it done.

I think your words will definitely help to highlight how important it is to many others for a long time to come xxx

I hope so, I personally had no idea how awful it could be until this happened. I was shocked by the amount of people desperately ill from it. On my sisters ward there was one bloke who was conscious and the rest were in comas. He actually looked dead tbh and he was the healthiest out of the lot of them :( x

Bumping this thread for the newbies x

Still practicing on the new phone.....

Thanks princess - will definitely be booking mine ASAP. Just out of curiosity if you do get a reaction/flu like symptoms after having the jab how long does it generally last for? I want to have mine in October but have my wedding on the 19th followed by my honeymoon. Don't want to be ill for my wedding but also want to be vaccinated before I fly as I always tend to pick things up on planes :(

Thanks Princess, I have mine booked for 30th September.
So sorry for your loss :-(

Just one question, does it make sense for our OHs to have the vaccine too because we're pregnant? My OH is asthmatic so it might be worth him having it anyway...

Good question, my husband commutes up to London every day so always on the tubes and trains. I'm convinced he brings all the bugs in to our house.

I personally think it's worth everyone having the flu jab, if you don't qualify on the NHS you can usually get it done at superdrug, tesco or any pharmacy for around £10.

Smileygirl, if your husband takes a daily steroid inhaler for his asthma, he will be offered it at your GP surgery.

You're right Toria, I do the daily commute into London on the train and tubes every day too and yesterday moved carriage as there was a guy right in my face coughing and spluttering everywhere! Sounds ott, but I'm only just getting over one cold (it's asking ages to go!) and don't want another!! It is a proper germ breeding haven!

And cool, Little Angel, I'll get on to my hubby about that!

I'm booked in with Boots or the flu jab, they offered it to me a couple of weeks ago when I went in for something else :)

Smileygirl, are you paying for that? You get it free from your GP while you're pregnant.

Can you have the jab even if you are only a few weeks pregnant? Will it cause any harm?

I'm vey sorry to hear about your sister. I usually get the Jen every yet xos of the people I work with but even gwtting that is an uphill battle. I haven't asked yet as I know that the clinics aren't for a month yet but I will

If your doctors are awkward don't forget that tesco pharmacy and lloyds pharmacy also do them for a fee. It's £10-20 I think which is what my mum did last year.

It's really worth it

@h0llie - the NHS recommends the vaccine at any stage of pregnancy. We've been giving flu vaccines to pregnant women for many years (they're slightly different every year but a lot of the components are the same) and they are considered completely safe.

There aren't generally any side effects from the actual jab, bar a sore arm because it's not a live vaccine that's used. Some people do complain of feeling a bit symptomatic after but it may be coincidental. I think all partners should have it as well, offers protection to you both. The specialist nurses at the hospital my sister was at recommended everyone should have it x

I had my flu jab when i pregnant beginning of the year.. How long day the jab last before u need a top up?? X

yes yearly, i get mine done in work as paitent contact & working in a hospital.

I've never had the flu jab as I'm not usually considered "at risk". I chose not to have the flu jab when I was pregnant last time, but am seriously considering it now. I'll be asking about it next week when I go for my whooping cough.

The flu jab coming out at the end of the month will be different than the one you had. They produce it every year to combat the most prevalent and worrying strains of flu expected to hit (the WHO decide). So the one you had at the beginning of the year was last years and you should have this one as well, as soon as it's available.

It's not a problem that it's less than a year since your last.
