I've just got back from the hospital, they did a trace and everything ok, felt like a plonker for wasting their time but they were really good, said the position has has changed which has probably affected it and with me feeling a bit rough. Hope the rest of you are feeling better and babies are behaving.
Summer, what does it cost for the cord blood banking? x
Glad everything is ok with bubs! Don't feel silly - better to be safe than sorry.
There's several different companies doing cord blood banking. it is pretty expensive but there are different packages available depending on whether you want volume reduced blood / whole cord blood / whole cord + tissue etc. but your basically looking at between £1,500 - £2,500. There are different payment plans depending on who you go with. It sounds a lot but it's for the first 25 years of your child's life; obviously you don't want to think about your child needing protection/treatment from cancers/diseases etc at any point in their lifetime (let alone as a child) but £100 a year is pretty decent to offer this kind of protection should it be needed in the future. The sofa suite in my living room cost about that

The sample can be stored beyond 25 years (for the whole of their life in fact) but obviously when they're 25 they can decide whether they want to continue having their stem cells stored.
It is a minefield!! Hubby and I spent a long time the other day researching. Like I say it does seem a bit like something out of a Sci-if film at the moment but this service has actually been available for over a decade now and the midwife liaison at my hospital knew exactly what I was talking about when I rang up and quite a few people do it.
I spoke to the company and my hospital about the logistics of it today. My only reservation at the moment is that you have to pay a non-refundable deposit for the sample collection kit and the phlebotomist to be present immediately after I labour - the blood + tissue needs to be taken less than 2 minutes after the placenta is delivered to ensure optimum stem cells are retrieved. Most hospitals/midwives won't do it (including mine) because it's obviously a private service and not part of NHS but apparantly they are familiar with the process and happy for the company to send their own private phlebotomist to wait in the hospital whilst you're in labour then be present for the delivery of the placenta so they can procure the sample.
There is always a risk that a sample is inadequate for storage, due to contamination or other factors (though the rep said this is very rare) - but the deposit is around £390 (not an amount I really want to risk flushing down the toilet) but I guess there's no way round it - initially it was £545 deposit (£245 deposit + £300 phlebotomist) so the rep I spoke to today has already reduced it for us ...
I'm really tempted and hubby is very keen - just wondered if anyone else was considering it or already done it? ...
