*** November 2014 Mum's ***

Oh no early arrivals that's never good!! :-/

I don't want to leave her tbh but know eventually ill have to I suppose and worry about where as my in-laws haven't the same ideals as me

I was thinking of having a bucks fizz and maybe a little port. Bf supporter said to perhaps drink it when feeding as it takes up to 90 mins to go into ur system so by time next feed it should have been n gone ... Maybe I should read the leaflet to clarify too haha.

Oh bless well at least they know now so maybe give it another go when it's just a short time again njp.

Not stopped feeding all day again. :( hope tonight's going to be better than last night. Not tempted by formula but get why ppl use expressed milk last thing at night so babies sleep longer. Ha

Sorry to say but that's not much for ten mins. What pump u got?

Apple did you express just after a feed? If Jake's just fed then I don't get amazing amounts. I tend to get just under an ounce from each boob in about 10 minutes. Apparently the best time to express is first thing in the morning, I've not tried yet though as I'm still too busy trying to sleep instead of worrying about expressing.

OH is about to try Jake on his first bottle. Eek.

How did it go mellie? Did u use that instead of a feed?

I only put about 1 oz in a bottle to see if he'd take it. At first he was a bit like what's this? But once he realised it was food he took it. Then I gave him boob afterwards to fill him up. They're meant to have about 3-4 oz per feed so wasn't expecting it to fill him.

I was getting full bottles but that was because I wasn't breastfeeding. It would take about 30 mins to get full bottles. I've stopped expressing now so have nothing to compare it to.

What sort of settings do you have on the machine? The one I had in hospital had auto settings but the one I have at home has manual settings. I start with a low suck strength but fast suck rate and after about 2 mins I switch to a high suck strength and a low suck rate. That's how the auto one in the hospital worked.

I know what you mean about feeling like a milking machine. The worst thing is, it takes both hands to hold the bottles so you're stuck there. I used to watch an episode of something to keep me occupied.

Yeah that's a good idea as then ur not wasting too much if he hadn't taken it anyway. Glad it worked out though. Do u think u might use bottles at home now too like mixed feeding? Or at night?

I filled up quickly with hospital one but found my manual one takes effort. Plus it takes both hands to do so can't get much done at all it's frustrating! Only bought manual as just needed some relief at times as was too heavy and full and as wasn't planning to express much as not planning on bottles but I'm now thinking for in future might have been a better investment. :-/

Not really planning on using bottles regularly just going to see how it goes, need to start expressing more first haven't got much of a freezer stash at the moment.

I couldn't get on with the manual pump I had, never gor anything out of it.

Oh interesting, thanks for comments girls.

so it was after about 30mins after a feed in the morning! Imogen also had some epic feeding in the night and i hadnt eaten since the epic session. Will try again after a feed but on the opposite boob i used.

I dont think i have a problem with milk supply...lot of wet and dirty nappies and Imogen never crys over hunger and i do a good amount of leaking on clothes and bed sheets! Interesting..will have to try another tact.

I have never been a massive bf fan and can see me moving to formula..i just cant stop and think to change tact yet..so just going with the flow.

Some ladies just can't express milk very well, but the amount you express has nothing to do with how much your baby is getting as baby is much more effective at getting the milk out. I expressed on Saturday and got 3oz from my right in 5 mins straight after feeding that side, but only 2oz of the left where I hadn't fed for 5/6 hours. So it can really vary. It does get easier, we are 12 weeks in and getting some long stretches between feeds and longer night time sleeps. Although we are still up at the mo, due to him sleeping 6pm - 10pm. Also formula fed babies don't neccessarily go longer at night than breastfed babies, plus it is more work making bottles etc. so if your breastfeeding just keep going as it really does get easier. I breastfed my first for 11 months! Plus breast milk is free lol xx

Just had to shout at OH, he keeps playing this stupid bloody snooker game on his phone. So he then only half pays attention to Jake. He was screaming so he just had him lay on the bed doing a half hearted "sshhh" while he played this stupid game. Jake didn't stop crying when he held him but clearly the answer isn't lie him there! Grrr

The following is from a blog by a mother who tested her milk for alcohol. Not one of those useless kits that you can buy at various stores, but tested at a toxicology laboratory. I will copy from her blog the method she used and the results. I think this puts the lie to the notion that women should not drink while breastfeeding or need to "pump and dump" (an appalling term) after having even one drink. The following is an exact quote from her blog:

Method:
First I took a sample of my milk (about 1 mL) prior to drinking any alcoholic beverage. I expressed the milk mid-nursing session to ensure I had a goodly portion of fore & hind milk. After completing the nursing session, I mixed myself an alcoholic beverage consisting of 2 oz of 80 proof (40%) vodka in 10 oz of soda (Sprite). I proceeded to drink the entire 12 oz in about 30 minutes. About 30 minutes after finishing (1 hour after beginning to drink), I expressed some milk (about 1 mL) and labeled it 'immediate'. I then waited 1 hour and expressed more milk (about 1 mL) and labeled it '2 hours'. In the 2 hours (from the beginning), I did not drink any more alcoholic beverages, drink other beverages, or eat any other foods. Another day, 1/2 of a beer (4.3% alcohol) and 2-6 oz glasses of wine were consumed within 1.5 hours. About an hour from the beginning of the last drink, a milk sample (about 1 mL) was taken. This sample was labeled '1 hour - 3 drinks'. Another sample was taken about an hour after that (2 hours after the beginning of the last drink). This sample was labeled '2 hours - 3 drinks'.

The samples were stored in the refrigerator until processing. An Agilent headspace instrument was used to run the tests. Propanol and ethanol standards were also tested to ensure the instrument was within limits. The instrument is maintained by the KSP Lab Toxicology Section and used in forensic determinations of blood and urine alcohol content.

Results:
The sample labeled as 'immediate' registered as 0.1370 mg/mL which correlates to 0.01370% alcohol in the sample. The sample labeled '2 hours' registered as 0.0000 mg/ml which correlates to 0.0000%. The sample labeled '1 hour - 3 drinks' registered as 0.3749 mg/mL which correlates to 0.03749% alcohol in the sample. The sample labeled '2 hours - 3 drinks' registered as 0.0629 mg/mL which correlates to 0.00629% alcohol in the sample.

Conclusion:
The alcohol content in breast milk immediately after drinking is equivalent to a 0.0274 proof beverage. That's like mixing 1 oz of 80 proof vodka (one shot) with 2919 oz of mixer . By the way, 2919 oz is over 70 liters. Two hours after drinking one (strong) drink the alcohol has disappeared from the sample. Completely harmless to the nursing infant. Drinking about 3 drinks in 1.5 hours resulted in higher numbers, but still negligible amounts of alcohol would be transferred to the child. One hour after imbibing in 3 drinks, the milk was the equivalent of 0.07498 proof beverage. That would be like adding 1 oz of 80 proof vodka (one shot) to 1066 oz of mixer (1066 oz is over 26 liters). Two hours after imbibing in 3 drinks, the milk was 0.01258 proof. That would be like adding 1 oz of 80 proof vodka to 3179 oz of mixer (over almost 80 liters). So, even though an infant has much less body weight, any of these percentage of alcohol in breast milk is unlikely to adversely affect the baby. Bottoms up!

Whey-hey, I do like it when science supports drinking!

Hope you and OH got over the snooker game incident.

Frankie is poorly and clingy today, she just cries when I put her down. We went to the doctors but typically she seemed loads better when she was in there. Doctor said just to keep an eye on her. I know there's not a lot you can do for newborns with colds but MW said contact doctor if at all unsure so I thought it was best to.

I woke him up at 8 this morning and made him take Jake downstairs while I slept some more. Unfortunately didn't get to sleep long as had to get ready for the funeral.

Leaving Jake for the first time went ok though, he's taking bottles fine. At least once he realises they have milk in he is anyway. Then I took him to the reception afterwards and he got to have cuddles off lots and lots of people :)

Rubbish that Frankies poorly, hopefully she gets over it quickly. Just feed her lots and lots so she's getting all the goodness and antibodies from you. I'd have gone the doctors too always best to be on the safe side with newborns.

OHs cousin took this adorable picture of Jake today :) he's started looking round the room for me when I talk now, it's so cute

Ahh, that's so cute! And that he's recognising you now. Glad that you got through the funeral okay, I bet he was the star of the reception, people love babies at times like that, helps get through the bad times.

She's feeding more often, I imagine because she's thirsty. You know whati t's like when you have a cold and you just want drinks to get rid of the tickle all the time. I've managed to put her down for a bit, hoping I'm not in for a night of crying for cuddles.

It was nice that so many of his family got to meet him, just a shame it was under such unfortunate circumstances.

Hopefully you manage to get some sleep tonight, if she feeds enough she'll get milk drunk hopefully!

Grr, she was asleep alone quite happily for the first time ever, when my niece popped in and started stroking her face & tickling her chest. I did hint this was the first time she'd been settled all day but she didn't take it & then the baby woke up and screamed the house down.

I suppose I should have been more direct but I didn't want to seem rude.

I'm hoping she'll feed to sleep too!

It's always sad when you have to get together for funerals but babies do cheer things up. What did you do about the outfit?

Oh no how annoying, typical someone does that when you finally get to put her down. I think people don't realise how annoying it is to have a baby want to be on you 24/7. To an outsider it probably seems sweet which it is at first.

Jake keeps waking up in his moses basket, no idea why though which makes it more annoying.

The top I ordered got delivered to Asda in the end, no dress though and no contact saying it would be missing or why. I only knew because I got an email from PayPal. Going to send them a little complaint email if and when I get chance. Because I was stuck wearing the top it meant I had to wear black jeans as no black trousers fitted me. So felt a little bad wearing jeans, just fortune OHs family are laid back about these things.
