Labour and Birth - Things the Movies don't tell us!!

lol just read the comments about the bum pills lol when I was up and about the following day after the section I said that I really needed pain killers and they said the ones we gave you yest wont have wore off I said I didnt take any and he midwife said oh yeah you would have got one in the bum when you were under. OMFG some person shoved a pill up my arse when I was out for the count come on now not good lol xx

The warning about rectal administration of analgesics (painkillers up the bum) is included in the consent paperwork you sign before the section........ Read the Small Print....Or don't 'cos it goes over the risk of death too......

yeah I did read it but never had time to go into fine detail as it was a matter of life and death form both me and Ellie at the time anyway xx

I've started thinking about my birth too, i think hypnobirth sounds good but if im honest I'm a complete wuss with pain so I will scream the place down, I had a panic attack over a blood test because I have a phobia of needles. So NO epidural for me, believe me! lol, I like the sound of the water birth too :) Oh aswel ladies how do you get those pictures underneath your comments with your due date and pregnancy stages ect....?? x

Chick im the same, I'm that much of a wuss I pass out if I get a paper cut! Pass out or have major panic attacks having blood tests I usually have to be pinned down! When I gave birth I panicked once, completely lost my mind for a minute and then I was fine, didn't scream, managed to laugh in between contractions and near the end I needed an epidural as I was so tired I couldn't function, I swore all the way through pregnancy I wouldn't have one just the thought made me physically sick but it was fine, once you're in the situation you honestly don't care about anything other than getting your baby out safe and sound. You'll be fine hun, promise :flower:

Sorry if someone's already said about this, but with having a bath afterwards, the idea of having one on my own or with my partner kinda creeps me out a bit, are the midwifes around to help you?!

sorry if it's a silly question
xXx

Not for me anyway , Aoibheann was born at 11 , I was put to bed and wasnt able to shower until my OH came in to watch her the next morning . Mind you I had an epidural and a catheter inserted . But I wasnt let shower until I had someone come in to watch my baby .

It probably sounds ridiculously obvious, but before my daughter I had no idea that you would actually feel the sensation to push- I thought the midwife had to tell you when to push! I didn't realise it's a deeply intense feeling, and you just HAVE to push, whether you like it or not. I know it's odd, but that was one of the best memories from it- my body was doing exactly what it was supposed to, working on instinct, and I felt... useful. That's strange, isn't it, lol?!

I went into shock after my LO was born and never warned that might happen, I was exhausted cos id been awake for 2 nights but only had gas and air and dont remember anything hardley. I dont remember him being placed on me and I didnt realise Id had him till my OH pointed out he was crying. I remeber crying for about 12 hours after and constantly saying I want to go home. The shock lasted about 2 days.

Can anyone vouch for birthing positions?
Is it really easier giving birth on all fours (or any other position) than lying down? x

I gave birth on my back , but when I was labouring I bounced on a ball , got on all fours , bent over the bed and wriggled .. I must have looked mad but it really helped take the edge of the contractions and felf much more natural .

This is a really good thread, I've just sat and read the whole thing! I don't want to be scared going into labour and funnily enough, despite all the horrible things, this has made me feel a bit more in control! xx

I was literally made to have a shower whilst still in the delivery room, I delivered him, was stitched up , fed him then he was put down to sleep and they had a shower room onsuite thing. A midwife had to stand in there with me the whole time even though I asked her to leave but apparently she wasnt allowed incase I fell or something so Id say yes the midwives are around to help if needed.

I really wish I'd had that ! I know it must have been uncomfortable with her standing there while you showered but at least you were safe :)

I think I'd be mortified having to be showered by someone else lol! But then I guess she'll have just seen me give birth so it won't really matter x The midwives have seen it all before :) x

This has been a really good thread actually, I'm glad cause people tell you so many horror stories and will say stuff like "Oh you'll def need this or that.." Its good as a first time mummy to hear everyones diffrent experiences x

So group THANKS to everyone :) x

i was left alone on my last to have a bath/shower but on the other 3 i had a family member come with me

I was left on my own to shower too, it was my first though and if I'm honest I could have done with some help. Both my Mum and OH had left to give me and LO some time / space / sleep but the midwife made me shower almost as soon as they're gone. I felt very faint in the shower and wasn't able to reach the pull cord to get help. I did stabilise enough to run some water over myself but that was about it really. I ended having to have another shower once OH got back a few hours later. What didn't help was that the midwife said she would watch LO but as I was shown where the shower was she said "don't be long, I'm very busy" - that didn't help at all.

Blimey, I'd completely forgotten about that!

Lo, just read that first bit back, I meant first baby, not first shower hahaha!
