c section

I'm electing for a c-section this time around.
I had a traumatic labor and birth with AJ, I'll not go into details. But I feel it will be better for us to 'know' baby is going to arrive safe and sound.

I'm only 12wks and have already had the mw trying to pressurise us into a 'normal birth', which is their job but it did feel as though I wasnt being listened to.
I have a consultant appointment today, which I presume is to discuss the birth and options, so we'll see how it goes.

i hope it goes well for you and you get what you want i think thats how all births should be how you want them

Thats true :) part of being a mummy is putting your childs health and safty first :) x

My hospital send you a leaflet telling you catergorically that they do not offer elective c-sections and they give you lots of facts and stat's as to why a natural birth is better.

Of course they offer emergency and consultant recommended c-sections

I don't quite agree with this.
Of course the safe delivery of my child was/is important but my birth experience was also important to me (and lots of others).
I know first hand how mentally and physically damaging a traumatic birth can be and I don't think you ever really get over it. Birth experience is important to lots of ladies and does matter x

Yeah my point is though were not all lucky enough to have the birth we want. i dont want a c section but my baby being safe and healthy comes before what i want. thats being a mum :)

I want my baby to be safe and healthy and even if i dont have the birth i want i get the most important thing healthy safe baby x

consultant recommended c sections i take it its just the same as elective?

Nope it's not the same - what I mean is as a pregnancy progresses there may be medical issues and it may be decided by the consultant that it is best for Mum and baby to have a c-section.

This is not the mother choice but the Dr's!

My understanding is a pre agreed c-section is an elective c-section. It doesn't matter whether you have no medical reason, or 5 medical reasons, it's still a pre agreed event. I stand to be corrected though!

I don't know of any NHS hospital that will do a c-section without a medical reason, but if you have a good reason for wanting one (previous traumatic birth, previous medical history etc) then they can't refuse you under NICE guidelines without referring you to somewhere that will help.

sounds the same to me lol.
yes alot of the time it is upto the doctor but obv they cant force you to have it done.
but a c section should only be done for medical reasons or because a normal birth would be difficult or risky x

It's never the doctors choice. Always the mothers. They can't force you to have a c-section any more than the can force you to have a natural birth. They can try and talk you into things, and they can act to save your (and bubbas) life in an emergency, but you have the right to choose.

It's all here in black and white: http://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/index.jsp?action=byTopic&o=7253#/search/?reload

Elective to me means it is your choice, lots of women have issues in pregnancy that means that cannot deliver so they are given a c-section (planned yes, chosen no)

My hospital clearly states that elective c-sections are not offered but if you have complications through-out the pregnancy you could end up having one... I am not explaining it well but this leaflet clearly differentiates between elective, medical and emergency!

A planned c-section for a medical reason is an elective c-section under NHS guidelines so I think you hospital leaflet is either dated or confusing!

I'd never choose to have a c-section!! Its my worst nightmare..

At the end of the day, yes its upto the mother, but the doctor has the final say... Just because you refuse to give birth naturally doesn't mean they will give you a c section.

It made me cringe watching OBEM, when the mum who was having twins elected to have a c-section, becuase all the celebs do it and they're all dead thin... such a good reason to have one.

All the doctors abduction midwife I've saw so far this time have basically told me a vba2c is just not an option. I hate the feeling of being numb so as you can imagine it terrifies me (if you look back through my old threads you'll see how terrified I was having my DS)

I honestly think c sections are given too easily in my area. There are no statistics that show Id be at any greater risk this time than I would have been last time with a vbac.

If the option is there I would choose to give birth naturally everytime, even if they refused to give me drugs

I had a horrific time due to Dr errors....

Basically I had a gtt, was told results were normal....then guidlines changed, was called and told fasting bloods were now 0.1 outwith what they deem to acceptable and I was labelled as a diabetic. Dr told me due to this they'd want to induce me, not what I wanted. Was induced before my due date!

Cut a ling story short it was just interference after interference....

I ended up a section, 2 litre blood loss, blood transfusion and baby in special care because my milk had zero glucose in it because they'd had me on a diet for a diabetic, when i wasn't diabetic!

I was in hospital for a week, it was honestly awful.

No WAY in hell would I choose a.section again unless it was necessary...I'm going for a VBAC..
