Split post re: UK going downhill

ohhh thats one thing i forgot to add, it has really really annoyed me..

My OH works in a call centre, just recently they had a celebration for an indian something or other, all decorations up food etc which is great! everyone said they enjoyed, but this Christmas your not allowed to say 'christmas' WTF!!!! It's like if your in the majority you now get penailised in case you offend the minority. It's a disgrace..

thats one thing that is annoying me about this country at moment, i am proud to be british but i want to be able to show it and I want to be able to celebrate my christmas and be given the same respect other cultures are given for their celebrations

Im Going To Have To Agree With Budge Here.

In MY Opinion Britain Is Going Downhill But With The Risk Of Starting a Very Heated Debate- Im Not Going To Give Reason.

I Will Say Though, That Particularly Where I Live (Leeds Area), The British Are Becoming The Miniority Very Quickly.

I am offended and upset that people assume the men and women who fought in our wars did so in vain and that they wouldn't be proud to be British

im sure thay are proud to be british, but not nessecaraly (sp) proud of the direction the country is going.

they did not die in vain, i am certain of that. and i do appologise if it came across that i thought they did die in vain, because i didnt think i expressed that

Your comment wasn't offensive, I'm sure most people will understand the point you were trying to make.

I certainly didn't get the impression you thought anybody had died in vain. Of course they didn't.

However, my grandad would be doing somersaults in his grave if he knew that you are no longer allowed to fly the Union flag for fear it may be perceived as politically provocative!

What an utterly ridiculous state of affairs!

We are lucky that here in Switzerland we can fly our Union flag without fear of upsetting anybody!

I found the comment offensive. I didn't like the assumtion that people who fought and died in the war would no longer be proud to be British. It was a very strong comment to make and I for one was upset and offended by it. For me it meant they had died in vain. There are more important things in life to worry about than whether you can fly a flag or not. In my opinion, (which by the way is not set in stone and is open for contructive debate)!

I'm well up for having this debate on the forum, but why don't we try and keep it on track and talk about the UK, not moan at people for having the views that they do? Everyone is entitled to their opinion, lets respect that.

If people feel the UK is going downhill, lets talk about why they feel that, instead of having an argument about it :)

in all fairness Lou.. you are assuming that Kelso assumed these men and women weren't proud etc.. which is silly cos Kelso has said she did not mean that.. she has also asked for it to be left.. if you dont think britain is going downhil add you comment to thread as to why you hold that opinion rather than caryying on an argument

sorry urchin but people who throw around comments and then moan when they get a response should think about what they are saying

i actually think that comment was un needed. i do think about what i post. and i dont see the problem with my original post tbh. please explain to me if i am missing something. i just do not see how it is offensive. as i did not go into why i think things need improving, or slagging off the country ect.

*sigh* i guess you cant say anything nowadays with out someone getting offended

I'm trying really hard to to get involved here :)

I do think people are allowed to be offended by things though, we all have our own views on things, I'm sure I've offended many people in my time here

This forum would be a very boring place if we all have the same opinions on everything.

thats right.
theres not point being offended by anyones comments. You cannot change opinions.
You just have to stick to what you belieeve in and voice your opinions. Which is what we are all doing.

Thats a really narrow minded comment. Of course you can change opinions and you dont just have to stick to what you believe in and voice your opinions. It just so happens with some people that you cannot challenge their opinions without having a barney which as urchin was trying to say is a shame.

in the appropriate place yes. but NOT in a rememberance thread. its insensitive. enough now ok. point has been made. i dont want to argue ok.

In my opinion, here we go, it was insensitive for you to post what you did in a rememberence thread. I am speaking up for something I feel strongly about so with all due respect I'll decide when I stop talking about it.

Fine, you found it offensive, you made your point and I accept it. I didn't, we agree to disagree?

And yes, you are right of course, the flag thing is just the very tip of the iceberg. The Christmas issue is just another pathetic manifestation of political correctness gone wrong. THAT is what upsets many Brits these days, and I for one, can totally understand it.

fine. if everyone feels that cooment was insensitive too i shall remove it.

am speaking up for something I feel strongly about so with all due respect I'll decide when I stop talking about it.

thats fine. but i have had enough of arguing about this and would like to get on topic

They didn't die in vain... they died to give us the freedom we have today... They fought against tyranny and oppression in Europe, and Europe wouldn't be conjoined in the way it is today, if it wasn't for their sacrifices.

At the end of the day every country in the world has crime issues, so you can just ignore that part really because that's the nature of the world today not anything to do with the sacrifice our soldiers made. It happens because of the population growth.

It's just a shame that the UK isn't what it used to be back in their day. If you talk to people who were around 60 years ago, Britain was a much more conjoined nation. The problem is there are more people in Britain now with much more diverse cultures and the sense of community in most places has died.... :(

Britain would have changed regardless of their sacrifice... that's time for you... But we have to appreciate the fact that we have a great deal of freedom that other countries do not have.

There are issues with Britain... I think the whole flag thing is ridiculous... The flag is a sense of pride and I don't think there is another nation in the world that has this issue  although I don't know... But as far as I am aware most nations fly their flag with pride without fear of retribution.

But there are issues with other countries too... so it's six and two threes. If you change countries all you do is exchange one set of issues for another... Personally, theres a lot nepatisim here in Spain where if you're Spanish things are thrown at you, but if you are a foreigner you get nothing... But they get to fly their flag with pride... so ... meh? Welcome to the World... :)

well for what its worth i think your comments are narrow minded. Just becasue YOU have been to india for 6 months you think we should all be grateful for what we have in this country.... thats narrow minded IMO.
Try furthering your mind and stop taking what we have in this country for granted.
