First icsi

Went for my appointment this afternoon and as af was a late started yesterday we r counting today as CD1 so tomorrow I start my buserelin and prednisolone but the nurse, so I knew what it would b like, got me to practice injecting myself with some saline and I'm so pleased she did as I had built up such a fear in my head but it was actually ok! X

It was, I felt so much better afterwards and it doesn't seem so daunting!x

So first injection yesterday along with prednisolone
Today I have a cracking headache, had a couple of odd dizzy spells and for the last twenty minutes crying for no blooming reason ! Af is still here so I'm thinking it could be that but could it be the injection also?
X.

I had a headache yesterday too and was super emotional, maybe the meds can affect you that quickly. Hope you feel better soon xx

I've just realised I've only been taking 10mg of the prednisolone once a day and I should be taking it twice a day grrrrr hope it hasn't messed anything up !!!!

The headaches have eased now, thank goodness but I do get palpitations, mostly at night but other than that ok I think. How are you doing with side effects?
I replied in your journal about not taking the full dose, I am sure it will be ok, you have realised fairly early on which is good xx

I don't feel too bad apart from the lack of appetite and feeling pretty pooped but I did do the last two Saturdays at work as wrll as a full week so could be that lol x

I can have one day where I feel ok and another with a horrible heavy headache. Its mostly the headache and feeling tired so it could be worse from what I have read so counting myself lucky, although I don't feel very lucky when I have the headache, they are awful and it says on my sheet to only take paracetamol, not really touching the pain.
Glad you're not feeling too many side effects, when is your scan again? Is it the 11th? xx

Yeah it doesn't seem to shift when it comes does it but your right, some of the side effects sound pretty yukky !

Scan is on the 10th x

Thought I'd jump back in here after being away for a while. My protocol changed a bit as I unexpectedly had a period and didn't start norethisterone till much later. Had my baseline scan today - looks like my pcos is in full swing as the nurse was even surprised at how many follicles were on my right ovary. Hopefully this won't cause any problems. I will start on gonal-f on Friday. Can't say I'm looking forward to the injections but kind of excited to get things properly started. How is everyone else doing? I'm reading about all this water you're all drinking, I'm rubbish at drinking water at the best of times but I'm guessing it's making you feel thirsty? x

Welcome back
Have you done your gonal-f injection today ?
I don't feel thirsty really but I've just been drinking it ha ha no wonder I'm always full lol

I think I'm having a weirdo day as ive been thinking about collection day and it feels so unknown territory that it freaks me out a little with what to expect, pain, anesthetic and afterwards Ek x

You're not alone, I find the thoughts of it a little terrifying too, I think I have almost blocked it out as I don't know what to expect at all. Do you know if OH's are allowed to be there? When I went for my erpc my OH wasn't even allowed to wait at the hospital with me, just had to drop me off in the ward and go. I am hoping he can stay with me for this xx

Hi Sarah

I was stressed before my first egg collection day but it's really not as bad as you might think!

I think it'll start off by you putting a painkiller in, er, the back passage (this freaked me out the first time - especially as the medical label on mine said "not suitable for pregnancy" but it's all ok apparently!)

If your day is anything like mine, they'll put a canula into your arm (which is about on par with the injections/blood taking - one time I found it really uncomfortable so they did it again & it was ok after that).

You'll go in (probably wheeled in on a bed) for your appointment where there are quite a few people / monitoring devices to make sure you're ok. I seem to remember some kind of heart monitor, blood pressure monitor, the anaethetist will put a mask on your face and attach the canula to their medicine. They may give you some pain killer (I also got given something to calm me down apparently!) and eventually the gas mask will dispense some drugged air that puts you under. It's a strange sensation but you fall asleep in less than 5 seconds.

After a nice nap you hear the nurse trying to wake you up & gradually come round in the bed.

They then want to know you can go to the loo ok. Things may well be a bit sore and there may be a small bit of blood from the operation (I had a couple of days of small bleeding last time) but once you have demonstrated doing a #1 then they're happy.

On my first occasion, the day before I hadn't eaten enough food (i.e. had only had breakfast & a late-night flapjack as it was a hectic day) and so my blood pressure was quite low & they had to put me on a drip until I felt better/able to stand. My advice: eat up the day before ;)

You should be driven home from the hospital and basically get home and rest.

I was dreading it the first time, but really, it was fine. I'd say what is worse is egg transfer because then you have quite a full bladder which can be uncomfortable if you end up waiting longer than you were expecting

Oh - and to lisey - my OH was allowed into the hospital bed area with me, this was in 2 different hospitals (he didn't go in for the operation). So while I was awake, he was around apart from the bit where they call off the men one by one to go do their part of the ICSI (which happens prior to egg collection).

Thank you so much tinsel that really has helped, I think the unknown is so much scarier and you hear all sorts ! So thats helped put my mind at rest

Oh good I'm glad it was useful - I totally empathise, as I was bricking it the first time, but felt a lot more relaxed times 2 and 3 around.

Also, you get to hear quite quickly how many eggs they've collected. I had 6, 10, and 5 (even with 17 mature follicles on the last occasion) - and it was only on the last time that anything worked. I was also told that the 5 collection was the most that anybody had had that day, so please don't be too alarmed if the numbers are lower than you expected.

You should also get to hear about husband's sample stats on the day (we had male factor issues so this was of interest).

Thanks for the info tinselcat, was helpful for me too :) xx
