I think I'm having a weirdo day as ive been thinking about collection day and it feels so unknown territory that it freaks me out a little with what to expect, pain, anesthetic and afterwards Ek x
Hi Sarah
I was stressed before my first egg collection day but it's really not as bad as you might think!
I think it'll start off by you putting a painkiller in, er, the back passage (this freaked me out the first time - especially as the medical label on mine said "not suitable for pregnancy" but it's all ok apparently!)
If your day is anything like mine, they'll put a canula into your arm (which is about on par with the injections/blood taking - one time I found it really uncomfortable so they did it again & it was ok after that).
You'll go in (probably wheeled in on a bed) for your appointment where there are quite a few people / monitoring devices to make sure you're ok. I seem to remember some kind of heart monitor, blood pressure monitor, the anaethetist will put a mask on your face and attach the canula to their medicine. They may give you some pain killer (I also got given something to calm me down apparently!) and eventually the gas mask will dispense some drugged air that puts you under. It's a strange sensation but you fall asleep in less than 5 seconds.
After a nice nap you hear the nurse trying to wake you up & gradually come round in the bed.
They then want to know you can go to the loo ok. Things may well be a bit sore and there may be a small bit of blood from the operation (I had a couple of days of small bleeding last time) but once you have demonstrated doing a #1 then they're happy.
On my first occasion, the day before I hadn't eaten enough food (i.e. had only had breakfast & a late-night flapjack as it was a hectic day) and so my blood pressure was quite low & they had to put me on a drip until I felt better/able to stand. My advice: eat up the day before
You should be driven home from the hospital and basically get home and rest.
I was dreading it the first time, but really, it was fine. I'd say what is worse is egg transfer because then you have quite a full bladder which can be uncomfortable if you end up waiting longer than you were expecting
Oh - and to lisey - my OH was allowed into the hospital bed area with me, this was in 2 different hospitals (he didn't go in for the operation). So while I was awake, he was around apart from the bit where they call off the men one by one to go do their part of the ICSI (which happens prior to egg collection).
