Whats happening in Gaza?

Whats going on in Gaza??? Ok ok... I know the history and I know whats "happening" but where's all this renewed violence come from and why's Israel gone all out for Hamas? Is it all Hamas fault? Did they deserve such a response from Israel? How will it all end? Can it ever end?

One comment that was made by Israel is that they are only attacking Hamas targets and of the 300+ dead 1400 injured they were all Hamas insurgents, but news reports were showing women, children and even babies being wheeled into hospitals covered in blood...

What do others think?

those pictures really upset me Its always innocents that end up baring the brunt of the war. I really cannot see any end to this in the near future - and don't understand what has caused this new wave of bombing from Israel

I don't know much about the history behind the violence but what I do know is when we were travelling years ago in India and Nepal most backpacker hostels banned Israelis from staying there and the Israelis we met were rude selfish and arrogant towards everyone. I had loads of arguments with them about their behaviour.

I'm not being racist in any way, its just my observations.

Hamas has control of the Gaza strip, and has been launching rockets from there into Southern Israel with increasing intensity over the last few weeks. Israel warned they would take action if it didn't stop.

Now they're striking back, and the innocents suffer.

Right now, there's speculation Israel may even go for re-occupation

I've never heard the Israel-Palestine conflict described as a holy war but then I don't watch the news much. The Israeli-Palestine conflict is part of the whole Arab - Israeli dispute though which is more religious, but I thought the Israel-Palestine thing mainly over the Gaza strip and whether it belongs to Palestine or Israel

Sammystar - thanks for that. Its not going to help Hamas get recognised as a legitimate political party as against the view they are terrorists.

Cor blimey... its so much more than a holy war... Its also terribly terribly complicated but it was actually the British government in their infinite wisdom and the Balfour Declaration of 1917 that originally caused all this way back at the end of the first world war...

Thats the thing...I bet even the Israelis and the Palestinians don't actually know what its all about... or at least can't even remember how it all started.

Its a nightmare!

My brothers girlfriend is living in nazereth just now and my bro is due to fly out on friday for 6 months.

It was interesting chatting to her about the conflicts, most isreali and palestinian people get on really well and want no part of the conflict..

They are in the north which is the safer part (the missiles go over them )

but yeah, as usual we started it!

I have no idea! I am not one for sitting watching the news every day, something that my dad has a go at me for because I always ask him what is going on. I watched a bit of news 24 with him yesterday about it and it was awful.
