The Gestational Diabetes support thread

5.5 is what she needs to have before meals - as far as I understood, you're only doing before meals at the moment? My before meals have to be under 5 and 1 hour after meals under 7.

You're very welcome, I know how difficult it is to come to terms with it all when you're new to this. I was just as frustrated and nothing seemed to be good enough. Which is why it's important to write everything down and eat/snack every 2 hours until you get hang of things more. I tend to snack on apples and bananas or a small cheese toast, cheese strings, chicken pieces etc. And dinners anything that's not too processed - I can do potatoes and even chips but not mash. Rice but not pasta?! Really random. Also, I use quite a lot of fats (oil when cooking or butter), when I say lot I don't mean smothering but a fair bit - always find that they tend to "swallow" the carbs and readings tend to be better.
Feel free to pm me if you wanna chat/discuss/rant :) xxx

Also, funny you mention stress - whenever I'm at work and have a crap day (often at work) my levels are higher than on days when I've been home and happy... xx

Oh sorry i didnt realise you were doing before meals...still 6.5 is still not bad xx

How are you doing jaxx? :)

It's probably a bit too high if she hasn't eaten for 4 hours but I'm sure the dietician will tell you more. Mine is really a*al, pardon my French, about my levels. Even if its 5.1 before meal rather than 5 or under she is already stressing and complaining... xx

Im ok thanks..just trying to get my head around the fact that I now have to count and check my levels for the rest of my life now :( xx

Sorry to hear that Jax x

Hopefully once you've experimented a bit you can get to know what triggers you and what doesn't and hopefully have to test less?

I'm having a mare with my levels. I can eat something thoroughly low GI like a salad (no dressing) with a handful of nuts and hit 8. The other morning I had my 'usual' breakfast of fresh oj, iron tablets, a cashew cookie bar (cashews and dates) and a banana and got 6.0 despite the oj/date content. Had the exact same thing this morning for breakfast and hit 18.7! Work that one out!

Sorry Jaxx, this must be such a nightmare :( You live in the hope it will be over and done with once the baby is out but to have it for life is a different matter. But on the positive side you know you have it so you can have treatment and it won't destroy your body.

Willow - I would stay away from OJ, juices are evil when it comes to diabetes. And yeah, it is very much trial and error - you will get there :) I normally have some form of egg with sausage or bacon for breakfast, low sugar cereal etc. Also you are likely to get higher readings in the morning so be extra careful :) xx

What I don't understand, is how I can have OJ one day and get 6.0 and two days later get 18.7!

I can't cut out fruit, I literally can eat fruit, veg and nuts. If I start cutting out fruit I literally have veg and nuts left to eat. Aside from the nutritional implications of that, the lack of variety sucks. I guess I could try apple juice? I just like something a bit thick to swallow my iron tablets with.

I'm getting such variety in the readings compared to what I'm eating that I've been keeping a diary related to my digestive problems and the amount of pain I'm in. To see if there is a link. So far the more pain I'm in, the higher the readings, so I suspect there is a link. It's either that or the pain is a coincidence and the meter is dodgy!

Yay better day today lunch time reading was 5.2:) the snacking inbetween meals seem to be helping :) feel a bit better anout it all today xxx

I've scoffed all morning then had another salad with a vegan burger for lunch and got 5.9. Perhaps I need a pre-breakfast breakfast to keep my readings low! Or is that cheating?

The more pain I'm in the less I eat and the higher the readings get. I think the snacking tip is a fab one! I'm just going to end up the size of a house!

Spoke to my diabetic nurse and told her my readings sai said they are good for what my diet is. So i can relax a little (not too much though!;-)) but ive now been put on metaforin once a day to see how it goes. :) xxx

Hi ladies

I had GD in my first pregnancy, but after reading through what a lot of you are dealing with I realise I got off quite easily as it was controlled fine by just my diet, my readings were always under 8.0. I didn't really have anything to compare it to so I didn't know at the time how lucky I actually was. It wasn't picked up until about 30 weeks and it basically put me on a healthy eating path that I probably should have been following anyway, but it's quite easy to fall into a treating yourself with chocolate and crappy sugary foods trap when you're pregnant and have 'an excuse'. Or maybe I'm just a greedy *******.

I've just found out I'm pregnant again and I believe it's quite likely I'll get GD again so this time I'm getting in early and doing the 'diabetes diet' from the off. I'll be hanging around in here for some ideas :D

Hi cantstop - congratulations! :)

I am currently one of those lucky ones who can just manage it by diet and I really hope it will remain this way so I am being very careful. Like you said, the bright side of things is that I am eating healthy not like I normally would "because I'm eating for 2" ;)

I found a diabetic ice cream at Asda yesterday - it's no Ben and jerry's but its ice cream and I could have a bowl without feeling guilty. Plus it kept my numbers nice and low - happy ;)

Welcome to the forum and good luck - hopefully you can stay away from it this time if your last one was mild :) x

Hi ladies. sorry to intrude...im sure the answer is on one of the many pages on this thread but not sure how long i will be searching. lol. I am having a GTT in a couple of weeks as have an extremely dry mouth and cant quench my thirst....also there is history of type 1 in my family. If you are diagnosed with GD, do they always deliver your baby early or is it dependant on person/situation? xxx

Dependant on person/situation. I've had that discussion with my diabetic nurse/MW loads of times. The milder it is the more of a chance you have to have a normal delivery. Plus of course if the baby is not too big. But they don't like to say anything until later on. But they told me women have refused induction before and is ultimately their choice.

They like to induce early because placenta starts to become less efficient closer to term so higher risk of still birth. They didn't tell me this first time i had induction at 38 weeks and it failed so section at 38+2. My second i had at 39+3 four days before due date which was elective section.

I've had good news! I'm not suffering GD! I've kept a diary with pain scoring, what I've eaten and meter results and they've said there is a clear correlation between my pain levels and the corresponding glucose result! Good job I didn't have the GTT because had I been having a bad day pain wise I could have been falsely diagnosed! They are going to keep an eye on bubbas levels once here because mine are literally totally erratic!

Got to keep pricking my finger, but it looks like I've escaped!

Thank you for all your support ladies, wishing you a healthy remaining pregnancy!
