The Gestational Diabetes support thread

As long as you can keep off the medicine you have a better chance of fighting against induction!

I find I'm not bad with carbs (the only thing that makes my readings high is pasta! Rice, bread, potatoes etc are ok) I just can't tolerate sweet stuff like chocolate, sweets etc.

Good luck and keep us updated. Also keep a food diary so if you ever get a high reading you know why! x

Thanks Hun, I wasn't going to keep a food diary because I wasn't expecting problems. I've had a fasting test (4.9), an after lunch reading (8.1), an after dinner reading (9.4) and an after breakfast reading (7.3). I'm not overly happy with the after food readings, I was advised they should all be under 7.8 and only one out of three are, so I am going to start a food diary to see what is kicking me off and what isn't. I have such a limited diet through allergies anyway, and I don't have bread/pasta/rice/potato/processed foods/sucrose, so I think I'm really going to struggle if I have to restrict further.

I'm not sure how bad those readings are in the scheme of things. I've been given a hotline straight to the diabetes midwife, she said to call her if I had high readings, I'm going to give it a few days and see how it goes and call if needed from there?

Hey willow I have been on insulin for a while now and still struggle with my readings despite being on a good diet and doing everything I can to keep my numbers down. I have been told some ladies just don't do a well as others and sometimes it's just out of our control. X

It really varies from people to people - I've not had an after meal reading over 7 for weeks so it seems to be working for me. But like Amy said, some women are good as gold with their diet and still can't keep it down - sometimes our bodies need help and it's not your fault.

Try eating protein rich meals, I have lots of salads with chicken etc - it has bored me to death but it's not as hard as it is for you since you have to stay away from most carbs anyway. Plus as I mentione before, it's not always just carbs, I can easily eat tons of rice, potatoes etc and it doesn't affect me.

Definitely keep a diary and google low gi foods/recipes and see of there's stuff you can have. May help x

Ok, so lunch was salad (leaves, red pepper, carrot, courgette) with cashew and walnuts (I'm vegan), glucose levels one hour after finishing 7.8. That's not great for what I ate is it? :(

Just thiought I'd let you know! I had 4.4 fasting mesurement and 4.8 2hrs later after glucose! So I have the all clear! thanks so much for this thread! without it I would have been so very fvery clueless xxxx

Willow - its not good, no :( after a salad I don't normally even reach 6's. As a vegan can you have quorn stuff?

Nope, it's got milk in it and I'm lactose intolerant. I'm limited to nuts and plant based protein sources like hemp and maca for protein levels.

Oh wow... That must be so difficult! Keep monitoring and try different things as much as you can but I'm aware you don't have many options... See what the consultant says when you ring them next... I really hope it's gonna get better for you, even I struggle and I can eat a lot more stuff!

What about risotto? I'm sorry, I'm a bit clueless when it comes to allergies etc. just thought you may wanna try some carbs (if there's any you can have) as I said most carbs are ok with me, just not processed sugary foods.

I can't tolerate carbs. I can't digest them :( carbs (even complex ones like whole grains) and animal proteins are off the menu.

I had my last diabetic clinic yesterday insulin has been upped to 30 before each meal. I have been taken off my aspirin as I'm being induced Monday. My consultant told me I can stop my injections as soon as babu is here. Can't say I will miss them at all!

willow that 7.8 was only one hour after food ?? we tend to have a spike one hour after...its the two hour reading thats important?? Maybe it fell to normal level at two hours.

I had my GTT and a HB1AC o whatever its called on wednesday. Not looking hopeful as my fasting was 8.2 and 2hrs after glucose was 12.5 on my meter...praying my meter is out :(

Hopefully get results today x

The 7.8 was one hour after finishing eating. I was told by the diabetic midwife they want my measurements one hour after I've eaten. I've got written instructions too, so I've definitely not misheard. Perhaps it's because I couldn't have the GTT?

Hey girls. Ive just found out i have gd. And well its a little over whelming. I got my meter yesterday and know how to use it my lvl before lunch was 3.9 but i cant go over 5.5 i have a apt with dietician nxt fri and im on slimming world so im eating right but im so confused on what to eat as ive heard fruit is high in sugar. And i love my fruit! :) And to top it off im craving sweet stuff now! :( what can i have that is sweet but not overly sweet that will make my lvls go through the roof lol. Xxx

It is really very much trial and error - different things send different people over the limit - I can have fruit and carbs and an occasional treat without it sending me over my limit. Other girls can't have any bread or pasta or fruit without getting really high readings.

I would suggest writing down everything you eat so if you get a high you know what it is. After a while you already know so don't have to write down so much.

Good luck :) x

Thanks hun :) ive decided to write stuff down just so i can show my dietician :) but thats a good idea to see what will effect it. :) i guess it is just trial and error :) and a learning curve for me :) xxx
