I had the glucose tolerance test yesterday and was called today to be told told I have gestational diabetes. They have immediately booked me in for a scan tomorrow to check the size of the baby.

Does anyone else have this? What is the likelihood I'll need an early C-Section? Bit worried now :(

O I have no idea... Did you have the glucose test for any reason or did they just do it? I presume if baby gets to big they will prob deliver early! But I'm not sure!

Do you have to watch what you eat with G.D??

Hope scan goes well! (Shame about having a emergency scan under the circumstances but least you get to see baby again)xx

I think they just control it with diet unless its a really bad case and you could just go on to deliver normally, will probably have extra monitoring during the pregnancy from now on. I guess you wont actually know until the scan and u know how the baby is growing. Someone else who has/had it will be able to fill you in properly tho. x

Kelly I was tested because there is a history in my family and my BMI is on the high side.
The diabetes specialist called me and booked an appointment to go through dietary requirements, and I have to do a finger-prick blood test every day.
I don't really know much else about it though :(
I was also told that I will definitely have to be induced before 39 weeks because the placenta deteriorates quicker in women with GD. So I will definitely be having her sooner than my due date.

I was shocked to find out I had it in my last pregnancy as wasn't tested during my first. I unfortunately couldn't control mine with diet alone and had to finger test before a meal and then 2 hours after to keep the levels within a certain range, I struggled with it all at first ended up with insulin injections before every meal but the diabetic nurse was fab and I could contact her anytime for advice. Ollie did measure large at the scans (I had antenatal consultant appt every 2 weeks and diabetic nurse at the same time about 2 or 3 extra scans. My little one was found to be breech all the time and having had a previous section I opted for an elective at 38 weeks which all went to plan but otherwise I would have been allowed to go to my due date. Ollie was a perfect 7lb 6oz at 38 weeks and the diabetes went as soon as he was delivered!!

Here everyone gets bloods done at 28 weeks, I seem to remember mine involved drinking locuzade an hour before. It's fairly common actually and can occur in healthy women. It usually goes away right when baby is delivered. Hospitals are used to this so I wouldn't worry too much. If anything you will get more appointments and monitoring which can be nice with your first! But I do feel for you, it's just one more thing to worry about. Hugs xxx

Just a quick update - I had my growth scan today and she's measuring completely normal. They measured head circumference, body and also the amniotic fluid and everything is nice and normal :)
Was so lovely to see her again, she had her fingers in her mouth. Been given my glucose testing kit too, feeling much better about it all knowing she hasn't grown too big. I've got another scan at 32 weeks and another at 36 (I think?) just to keep an eye on her.

Oh, she's also lying transverse. Plenty of time for her to wriggle into a downwards position though :)

Aww Jealous about you having extra scan!!! Really pleased that everything is normal! :) xx

Hi - I got diagnosed with this around 31 weeks and managed to control it with diet alone. Had to test my blood with the finger prick machine thing four times every day and write it down and have regular appointments with the diabetes clinic where they weighed me and advised me. I also had growth scans to check the baby was measuring normal, and in the end I got induced at 38+5 and my little lamb was 7lb 5oz. No section needed, and she was totally fine.

It sucked not being able to eat anything sweet but it probably did me the world of good tbh, am eating crap again now I can. So try not to worry about it, on the bright side you'll almost definitely not go overdue!
