SPD Support Thread

I'm phoning the physio tomorrow - I know there isn't anything else they can do for me, but they said to phone if it gets any worse, and its getting worse ... so I'm phoning!

I think you should. We are frequenting hospital about once a week at the moment with pain I need IV morphine for because I end up screaming with it.

If you don't keep on about it nothing gets done sadly :( :hugs to you and hope your better soon.

I think I overdone things today, and even then I didn't exactly do much, and I'm really suffering now. I'm in total agony, can barely move. The doctor prescribed me dihydracodine a few weeks ago for when the pain gets really bad, and I try not to take them but had to give in and take one tonight, and yet I'm still in alot of pain =( Luckily my OH is n his days off, so can help me with our DD. I feel so miserable today, just want to cry x

How is everyone feeling today?

Went to work yesterday, but was in tears driving home it was so painful! Yesterday it was more back & hips - this morning it's the front again, so no work for me today - only got another week until Doc appt to be (hopefully) signed off until ML starts - be one less thing to worry about!

Have you still got relief Leesey? And how is Mrs Bump getting on? Tweety did you get an appt? Hugs to Willow & busymummy xx

I had some acupuncture yesterday afternoon. I had real cramping whilst the needles were in, felt a huge amount better once they were out and despite having cramps around the front of my tummy all night, my back, shoulders and pelvis have been much better, so far anyway. Not convinced about how long the effect is going to last.

I've also managed a bit of light relief with epsom salt baths. I've also ordered a tens machine to use during pregnancy to ease the pain signals to the brain on the advice of my physio. We are literally throwing everything at this, it's miserable, I've been in pain of varying amounts for over 10 weeks now, I'm not sure how I'm going to make it through another nearly 16 weeks of this getting worse. Anything that helps, eases or offers any small relief is welcome right now!

1stbump12, I'm so lucky I've almost entirely given up work (self employed), as I just can't do it, hats off to you for driving every day, I break out in a cold sweat at the idea of even getting in the car. I hope you manage to get signed off till ML x

What would cheer me up would be some lovely healthy babies from Leesey and Mrs Bump. Any progress ladies?

fx you get signed off 1stbump12, you have done really well to manage this long. We really are all having a tough time of it. Willowwisp, think I will try the epsom bath salts, don't think I could manage the acupuncture though, I feel quesy when there are needles are in me lol. Glad it has given you some relief though. My painkillers eventually kicked in last night, although I was still sore they made me very drowsy so I got a good sleep. Back isn't feeling too bad so far today, but got pain in my pubic bone today, hope it doesn't last too long. X

Yes! It's a blimmin miracle if you ask me, I've no idea how this is happening!! I wake up feeling great, I can overtake people on the street, I can go up and down stairs, and I go to bed feeling great!!

I feel like I'm getting rewarded after such a miserable pregnancy, to be able to enjoy my last week or so and end on a high note. I feel very lucky :) xx

That's fantastic leesey. I'm still hanging on here, still no sign of this baby! Got another sweep tomorrow, hopefully my cervix will be a bit more favourable than last week and am booked for induction next Thursday with 2 more sweeps before that but would dearly love to go naturally before that! The pain is pretty bad at the moment but having said that I'm not having to do an awful lot at the moment as my days currently consist mainly of watching the Olympics! Very interesting to hear about the acupuncture, if I wasn't so far gone I think I would probably give it a go! xx

I'm in so much pain going to have to bring this up with my MW/GP but I don't think they'll do anything, mentioned it last time and they just said 'well, that's pregnancy and you're having twins so it's worse' - i actually couldn't walk today the pain is unbearable. Have slept til 6pm as all night I was in agony with my hips tailbone etc. just awful feelings, even when I'm on loads of cushions lying down the pain doesn't subside. Agony. :(

I have no idea :/ I'm going to book a GP appointment tomorrow and just see what they say otherwise I'm at the hospital early next week so going to ask the MW's there- they seem a bit more useful. Not sure how I'll cope if I don't get some kind of help, the pain has been so bad :(

Can i ask, did anyone get this early on in there pregnancy or is it like a tri 3 thing? Thanks x

I was 18weeks when first diagnosed but was struggling before then x

14 weeks for me and I suddenly couldn't walk. We've got much better at managing it as the pregnancy has progressed despite the fact my joints have got worse.

No walking, walking with legs together taking small steps. Going really carefully up the stairs, one stair at a time. Morphine for when I just can't stand it. Baths, heat pads, and I am VERY lucky to have an exceptional BUPA physio after I refused to be yanked around by an NHS physio.

Im only 9-10 weeks but epau told me it was this and has prob come on early cos i had it wi my first child and to ring my midwife, but my midwife says u dont get it this early on so itll just be growing n stretching or sat on a nerve .. Didnt realise a 3 cm baby cud sit on a netve inuf to cause pain im back, groin, legs, etc.. Thought id see if u ladies had any ideas x

Are you hypermobile or ehlers danlos when not pregnant? If you suffer from hypermobility/ehlers danlos usually then it's more likely that you will both suffer SPD and start to suffer earlier on. Really you should be referred to a physio to make the diagnosis. Midwives are trained in the care of pregnant women and the delivery of babies and not the ins and outs of hypermobility/ehlers danlos and therefore are not the best people to assist you with managing the pain.

No nothing when not pregnant , i had this at the end of my pregnancy but was literally week 36/37 then gave birth x

I would ask for a physio referral and let them make the assessment. If you have no joy with your midwife then speak to your GP.

Cramping and pulling type pains could be just things stretching, especially if you have any scar tissue in your abdomen. Dagger like pain, burning pain or freezing pain are the most common ways of describing SPD, cramping in related muscles often occurs with or after the stabbing/burning sensation in the joint. So hips for example, feeling like someone is inserting red hot daggers deep into your hips is SPD pain, cramping in the buttock which follows is the muscle struggling to work well enough because the joint is loose.

The big problem is that the location, intensity and description of SPD pain varies to much from woman to woman, it's a very individual experience.

My gp is rubbish for appointments but im Seeing consultant in 4 weeks would he be able to help? Its not massively in my hips the stabbing is mainly my back pubic bone n groin N then i get the cramping/ pins m needles in my bum, legs etc.. I tried to ease it off by getting a bath but ended up stuck in the bath n oh had to lift me out.. X

My physio said it can come much earlier on with 2nd and subsequent pregnancies :-( x
