*** November 2014 Mum's ***

Sorry for late reply Apple I never find time to come on here much :-(

Mil is behaving! Think it helped that for the first 4-5 weeks of Preston's life she hardly visited due to both kids being ill, I don't ask for her help and just get on with it on my own. She doesn't hold him much as she's frightened to drop him apparently.. No idea why as her son came out as a 10lb baby so you would think she would be fine. Here's hoping this carries on into the new year!

How are we all doing?

Preston had all his measurements taken today. 7weeks 3 days old, weighs 12lb 13oz & measures 57cm.

Aww Preston is looking cute! Glad the MIL is behaving.

Mine is a bit of a pain, her opinions are gospel. We were at SIL's & they have an energetic dog, who I was carefully allowing to sniff the baby to get over his curiosity. Mil pulled the dog away, smacked him hard and shouted at him. I objected and she said 'I don't care what you believe, I don't believe in dogs sniffing around babies', so I said 'well I do, and it's my baby so it's my decision'. SIL was well put out at her dog being hit when he hadn't done anything wrong, she's still working on discipline with him and doesn't want him getting confusing messages.

When they measured Preston, do they do top of head to heel? I'm going to take Frankie to the clinic on weds but I measured her myself and she's already 56cm head to heel.

I'd be well annoyed if someone hit my dog. Especially as he was just being curious. He'll end up not liking the baby if he associates her with pain. Much better to let them have a little sniff. We let Rocky sniff Jake all the time, only tell him off if he jumps up us when we're holding him and we obviously never leave the two of them alone together just in case.

My MIL just keeps suggesting formula and keeps telling me how she managed to breast feed my OH for 6 weeks then put him onto formula and solids!! I'm perfectly into the rhythm of feeding now, I think formula would just take up more time especially at night, I'd actually have to get out of bed!

I think Jake was 55cm long when he was measured a week or so ago. It is from head to heel though, they lay him down on this special sheet thing. I want to get him weighed again but the clinic is on a Thursday so wont be open this week.

Why has no one measured faith should I ask about it when hv comes?

Was so good to have faith for us all to focus on and the thought that grandad left to make way for her in the world brings us all some comfort.

I let the dogs in our families have a sniff and even my auntys cat I think it's important for them to get used to their smell so they wI'll be used to her when she is there.

Njp faith was unhappy a lot but since we upped her dose of ranitidine for her reflux she's been fab, it's not that is it?

Ooh glad ur getting a break from her Katie bit weird her saying that though,

Kaa I have the opposite problem I combine fed to soon and now piper won't take my breast :( gutted but still pumping to maintain my milk. Hoping a miracle will happen and she will switch back but I think we have came to far now :(. I miss feeding my baby girl so much.

Yes NJP he was measured from head to toe. I've been curious to know his height for a while so glad the nurse did it today.

Such a shame about the dog situation! Mil can be like that with our dog, she always shouts at the dog if she wafts her tail to close to the baby or shuts her away but she seems to forget Amber is still a puppy and learning.. She seems to think she is some sort of dog expert but the dogs she was brought up with were tiny little chihuahuas!

I was cautious with Amber at first with PJ as every little noise he made she always ran over to the Moses basket or get all jumpy but now shes learnt to be gentle now and doesn't run at every noise, she even licks his head and he smiles away.. However she is very protective if we are out on a walk and another dog comes near the pram!

Kaa with my eldest I remember not giving her a bottle between 6 weeks and 12 weeks and struggled to get her to take one then but she did in the end. However then I left it another 4 weeks and she point blank refused and did so until 13 months when I stopped breastfeeding. The only upside was she didn't take a bottle after and went straight to beakers.
This time I'm giving a bottle every few days so she'll keep on. But as they get older, they do become more resisting unless they're given one very regularly.xx

Oh no Chaz :-/ I must admit I'm kind of glad each time she refuses as seeing someone else trying to feed her upsets me a little, feel silly for it but can't help it. It's like the only thing she can only rely on me for so a bit gutting if that's taken from me!

Well I don't plan to give bottles everyday it was just really to see if she would take one so that if we ever need to rely on a bottle we can so could end up having the same happen, get her used to one then not need to give her one for weeks ha.
Would be nice to go straight into beakers but at what age does that happen? I have no idea of milestones beyond breastfeeding! :-o got a lot of research to do so I know what to expect haha

I think I'm still clueless! You start to offer sippy cups of water when you start weaning. Though mine refused them until around 10 months as she's a stubborn mule! You can move them into cows milk from 12 months. I was going back to work full time when she was 14 months so I wanted to stop breastfeeding completley. She didn't like cows milk so I just made sure she got the recommended calcium/fat in her diet.
Though after they're weaned they generally don't breastfeed as much. Think mine was having 4 feeds a day. So you can plan going out without them around that if they're not taking a bottle. Also as they get older you can distract them more if they're grumbling whereas now it's boob in mouth when they start to whinge. But they're all different I know.

Kaa, no-one has measured Frankie either. I'm assuming the drop in weighing clinic will do it. Though I'm not sure I'll make it there tomorrow as we have an afternoon appointment for her hip ultrasound and I don't know if I'm up to getting out and about in the morning and afternoon too, as well as going to MIL's for NYE.

How did you know Faith had reflux? Frankie grizzles a lot but I don't know if it's normal baby stuff or what. She doesn't like lying down when she's awake but I think that's partly wanting cuddles and partly wanting to look around.

Chaz, have you tried nipple shields? They are a bit like bottle teats so it might be a way to ease her back on to the breast.

That's exactly my thoughts about the dog, Mellie & Katie. The dogs shouldn't associate pain and being told off with the baby, that's the way to foster resentment towards them. My dog is fine, she is still curious but isn't scared of the baby now. Still wouldn't leave them alone together. I even take the dog into the toilet with me when the baby is asleep in her basket, rather than leave the dog with her.

I've got the first cloth nappy on this evening! Only got a few at the minute so will be alternating with disposables until I see if I like this brand of cloth. Will be getting going with the cheeky wipes soon too, will be up to my eyes in washing soon enough!

Kaa & NJP if you ask when you go to weigh in they will measure for you. They never measured with myah so I just asked :)

Baby booboo glad you got some sleep! Think I may have cracked preston sleeping through just like myah at 8 weeks old. He usually goes down between 12-1am and sleeps until 4 or 6am. Think the new coffee machine helps with the feeds though!

Did you all enjoy christmas? Receive anything special? I got this lovely chain and photo of PJ! Did you buy anything for the babies?

Thanks for the shower and steam tip njp I hadn't thought of that. We are using a saline nasel spray. The doctor suggested some Olibus oil on her bedding but we've put it on a bin and hung it around handle of Moses basket on the outside, I didn't want it too close to her.

Frankie sounds a lot like Ruby when she was a few weeks old and struggling with colic, she wouldn't be put down and winding took ages. After about 3 weeks of using infacol she's loads better, her wind is coming up with not so much effort and sometimes she burps when changing her winding positions. We just went with it and picked her up for the comfort. We've moved on to constipation now! She cries really high pitched when trumping and trying to pass stools and there a little hard. Bless her.

Chaz I have that problem too, I really struggled to breastfeed in the first week and had no choice but to give a bottle as she wouldn't have been fed of I didn't and I hated it. Now she has the sniffles she's barely taking anything from me, I'm still trying but with her cold it's so much easier for her to get milk from a bottle. We use tommee tippee and she took them straight away.

I did a lot of research on her behaviours and when I took her to the doctors about it he agreed it was reflux and prescribed gaviscon...what a joke that was she would gag and splutter and one day projectile vomited so I went straight back and got the ranitidine. I'd also researched that so knew what to ask for rather than being fobbed off. I do a lot of research on things during feeds haha.

Ah well I might ask about the measuring of height. Thanks Katie didn't think to just ask!

Got my appt for faiths second lot of jabs next Thursday :'( dreading it. Can't believe she will be 12 weeks already it's only 2 mins since she had the first lot too poor little love.

Got hv coming on Monday started compiling a list of questions ready for her ha.
Starting baby massage in next couple weeks and then baby sensory soon too.

Any nice plans for tonight? If we end up just staying in I will cry as he working til gone 7pm n guarantee he'll come home, eat then fall asleep :( hope he agrees we can spend it with family or friends (he a miserable sod) ha

My HV measured Jake's height and head ready for his 6 week check as the doctor looked at all that in the red book. I really want to know what he's weighing at the moment, this is the longest I've gone without knowing. But baby clinic is on a Thursday so will be closed tomorrow.

Girl who I worked with had her baby 2 weeks before I had Jake, so she had her first lot of jabs today. She then put pictures on Facebook of her feeding her baby rice "as a treat". The baby is 9 weeks old!! I've been reading so much about how bad early weaning is that is really annoyed me, took all my strength not to comment on it. Plus I've been reading bad things about baby rice recently too.....generally I think I need to stop reading so much! Haha

It always annoys me when women wean there babies early as well mellie! Every person I know that's done it early has ended up with chubby babies.

I had a friend share a photo of there 6 month old trying to eat a pork pie! I didn't wean myah until 6 months and she has always stayed a beautiful weight so I hope to do the same with PJ!

In a way I understand why people wean at 4 months as most of the packets in the supermarket say 4+ months and I imagine a lot of people go by that.

I'm going to try my hardest to last until 6 months. Weaning before then cam cause horrible stomach problems in later life. Plus obesity as you've mentioned.

Jake's trying his hardest to roll over on his play mat this evening! (Yes this is our big new year plans!!)

Happy new year ladies...i didnt see new year in..opted for bed at 10:00 instead...

Happy New Year! I was up until 3.30am. Not by choice - Frankie was fine when we were out but when we got home she wouldn't settle, so it was a very long lie in this morning!

I heard of someone who weaned their child onto solid foods and was giving it garlic bread at 4 months. She was under the care of social services, fortunately, so then received extra parenting support, once they realised what she was doing.

I'll have a read into reflux and colic a but more, though Frankie isn't too bad at the minute. Hoping that the infacol is starting to kick in.

Garlic bread at 4 months? What goes through some peoples heads?!

I was in bed for 9pm, and was asleep at midnight. Although he did wake me up at 11 for a feed. OH stayed awake until about 3am but that was only because Rocky was petrified of the fireworks!
