Gestational diabetes support thread

Ah in my area they don't let you go past 39 weeks if you have GD.

I don't think growth scans are always that precise so they may have been out with the last measurement, or this one. Has baby moved more today? Xx

Lucky you I hate my hospital because no matter who you ask, the answers all differ it's a joke lol he has been really quiet the last two days, night times is usually his play time but not the last 2 nights, on the scan I could see his head turn from side to side even though I couldn't feel a thing, damn anterior placenta making me worry more than necessary but since I got home at 6pm he had a few little wiggles which is good. Yea them scans I take with a pinch of salt. God luck tomorrow at your scan dying to know what your little one weighs xx

Anyone have gd on a second pregnancy with no previous issues for baby 1 and no diabetes in family?

I didn't have it for baby number one, although my grandfather on my dad's side has diabetes xx

Just got out of scan. Baby weighs just under 5lb 5oz which is about right for 34+4.
However head circumference is measuring 37 weeks!!! Bit panicked now as it's the head that will be coming out first if I manage it naturally! :-/
Xxx

Aww Naomi, don't worry, the rest of baby will probably catch up and be just perfect size for birthing xx you can do it xx

Aw thanks Karen. Need a little pep talk once in a while!!

Feeling shattered today. Was going to take millie out this morning but had zero energy so ended up both spending the morning in our pyjamas watching films. On our way to a play date now though so at least she won't have been trapped in all day.

My parents are back from Peru now too so I feel calmer knowing they are around! Looking forward to date night saturday and the Chinese, am literally salivating at the thought of it.

About to pick up a baby carrier (close caboo) second hand but barely used from someone who lives locally. I think it looks a bit more secure than the stretchy wrap I used last time. Looking forward to getting it home later and having a play with one of millies dolls to work out how it goes!

How's your day going? How have your levels been? Xxx

I've bought a wrap to try, just for in the house in case he's a baby that won't be put down lol
I've been to Mothercare today to change the monitor I bought, I had just got a sound one but DH wanted a video and sound one. I don't really see the need for a video one cos it's not as if I'm going to be awake all night watching him once he's in his own room and I've got a snuza hero breathing monitor for him as well!
Then went to Asda to pick a few things up and got my after birth treats in and all packed in my hospital bag, I got myself some mint matchmakers, 4 pack of cadburys caramels, 3 pack frys Turkish delight (my fave) and a bag of sports mixture gums ...... I cannot wait to tuck in!!!!!!!!
My levels have been really good still, I had a mcchicken sandwich meal from McDonald's while I was out today and post level was 5.6!!
How have yours been?

Yeh I found having a wrap a god send last time and imagine it will be even more invaluable this time around so I can have hands free to deal with millie! Makes walking the dog easier too.

We've just got a sound monitor with the movement sensor thing. Your after birth treats sound amazing! So far I've got lindt Lindor chocolates and some fruit pastels. Going to pick up a few more bits over the next couple of weeks.

That's an awesome level after your McDonald's! Mine have all been good recently but I havent tried anything a bit naughty (apart from the pizza slice) so will be interested to see how the Chinese affects it on Saturday. Xxx

I thought id post here cause i dont know whats happening. Had my 30 week bloods and my glucose was high. Mw told me its very likely i have gestational diabetes but not confirmed until my glucose tolerance test (end of next week)

Just preparing that i do have it so just wondering any of you work nights? How do you manage then? Theres is just no hope that i cant eat during my shift and i usually have one or two small meals as im on my feet all night. My main worry is fruit. Fruit is pretty much a staple part of my diet and its all i crave! Do i have to now cut it out? Obviously ill have to cut down. I know I should save all this for the test results after but i have zero confidence in the mws giving me good info!

Hiya hun. Well firstly hope you don't have it, but if you do its not the end of the world. I was so upset when I was diagnosed but I've found it to not be too horrendous in general and haven't had any levels above my target.
fruit wise I only have maybe two portions a day now and focus more on vege instead. The fruit I do have it always with a meal and I stick to an actual portion eg used to have a load of grapes in one sitting whereas a portion size of grapes is only a few of them.

I can't advise much on night shifts but if you're on nights do you normally sleep through one or two meals during the day? Imagine you'd do the same as normal just at different times. And you can still snack on GD - in fact it's good to if you've got a long time between meals. It's all about thinking your snacks through though and making sure meals aren't too carb heavy. I've cut out white carbs pretty much altogether and just have wholegrain ones.

I wouldn't stress too much until you know what you're dealing with. You'll meet with a diabetic nurse if you do have it who will be able to give you some advice and there's loads of stuff online too :-) xxx

Thanks for reply. Im just really worried my diet is only fruit, veg and mashed potatoes, and occasionally weetabix or porridge everything else makes me sick! I cant stand the sight or smell of pasta or meat at all ive turned into a real fussy toddler. I don't even cook cause the smell of everything makes me sick, my poor hubby hasnt had a meal with me in months. I really dont know what lll be eating at all! I was going through this thread and not one thing appealed :( i have gallstones too so my diet has to be no fat! Im just freaking out and trying to be prepared. Lol.

Night shift wise I eat breakfast (weetabix od porridge and fruit) at about 11am, dinner (potatoes) before i go at 6 then 2 small meals (both potatoes haha) between 1am and 6am and fruit and veg in between 6pm to 6am. Then i have breakfast again when im in at 8am next morning. Thats my general routine tk keep me going at night. Just worried, surely though im not the first, tgey should give me some advice to suit :/ i hope lol.

Although its not confirmed mw took one look at my bmi from start of pregnancy and just said its highly likely. Nevermind the fact my bmi has went from 31 to 26 during pregnancy!

Have a good read of this website, it has all the info you need about gestational diabetes and how to manage it. I've been using it since diagnosis and have remained diet controlled and baby is growing fine along the 50th centile.
There's also a Facebook page where you can get further support.
Night shift shouldn't be a problem as regular meals and snacks are key to keeping your blood sugars stable xx start making changes just now as I'm sure you know ..... high blood sugars are not good for baby xx

If you're struggling to eat anything but sugars and carbs then you will probably need insulin to control your bs to allow you to eat x but in the meantime you really need to try and reduce all that sugar and carbs and try to introduce more protein into your diet. It's all about the baby for now xx

Lol its baby that makes me vomit it back up! Haha! I think im just panicking its one moe thing on this never-ending list of sickness or things going wrong in pregnancy. The mws haven't stopped making me feel guilty about my weight or my diet or something! Just want baby to be here :( i dont have fb but will def look at site thanks!

There's info on the site about managing with hyperemesis, I appreciate its hard but GD can have serious complications for baby xx

Your midwife sounds a bit cold!! 31 is only just into the obese category isn't it. Like Karen said though you'll want to cut down on the carbs and try and swap some of the fruit for vege instead. For instance, yesterday I had:
One slice of burgen bread toasted with an egg and about 8 grapes for breakfast
A wholegrain wrap with lots of salad in and some chicken and cheese for lunch
Two rich tea biscuits, some chopped pepper and hummus for snack
Homemade spag bol (pepper chopped up into it and only a small amount of wholegrain spaghetti) with a side of mangetout and runner beans for dinner plus some grated cheese

So there's a carb with every meal but it's not like the focus of every meal? When I was told I could have it, I researched a fair bit and started trying to make the changes to my diet - I was living off mainly carbs before as they were the only thing that didn't make me feel sick but I've adjusted to the diet change now and apart from craving junk good occasionally it's not so bad and luckily the change hasn't made me too nauseaus. The consultant I saw after the diagnosis

Sorry posted before I was done!!

The consultant scared me a bit about the potential outcomes for baby (and me) if I didn't make the changes to my diet but actually I think that was what I needed to shock me into taking it seriously. I'm still eating reasonable portions and I never used to eat breakfast before so think I'm a lot healthier now than I was. And luckily it doesn't seem to have had an impact on my baby because like Karen's they are following the 50th percentile and their tummy is spot on 50th percentile.

I totally empathise though with how you're feeling as it takes a bit of getting used to and I felt really crap after I was told I might have it, and when I found out I actually did. All you can do is start trying to make the positive changes now and see how you get on. And then just wait for your test. Worst comes to worst if you do have it you are fairly near the end now so it's not too long for you to have to do the diet.

Did you say when you've got the test? Can't remember - hope it goes ok :-)
Xx

Woohoo Karen guess what??? Had my Chinese today and just done my level and it was 6.5!!!! :-) :-) had three duck pancakes, followed by some chicken chow mein with a few prawn crackers. It was lush and so glad my levels were fine! Xxx

That's brilliant Naomi! Feels great to have something so tasty that's doesn't involve cheese or nuts doesn't it!!!!!!!
A good dessert that my blood sugars are ok with if you're looking for something is no added sugar angel delight with some full fat squirty cream and toasted flaked almonds ... hits the spot when you need a sweet treat xx
