Bottle Feeding Support Thread

if lelands had some of the bottle , longest i leave it is 2 hours ( but only an hour when it was hot weather) , if he hasnt touched it your ok for a bit longer . its once theyve had some , bacteria i beleive can start to grow , also if youve warmed it , i would only leave it 2 hours max too , as soon as its warm , bacteria will start to grow .

btw , im on hipp stage 2 , and that mixes fine at room temp , infact , he loves it !

I'm using aptimil, I will give it a go at room temp and see how it goes.

Another question... How long do you keep a bottle that you've made up before you throw it away? On the box it says 2 hours, HV just told me 1 hour.

Jaida had 1oz at 9am and 2oz between 11 and 12. She seems content enough, just wish she'd have more so she goes longer in between:roll:

When Phoebe was small we used cartons for this reason. That way you can put the carton back in the fridge, then if she wants more than 1oz you can get some more out :)

And yes we top up with hot water. At the mo we use 6oz cold and top up with 2oz hot from a flask. Makes it about right :)

OMG just had our first experiance of formula poo...does it always smell that strong  ? been used to the relativly unsmelly breastmilk ones!

Hehe probably, I can't remember what breastmilk poos smell like. Phoebe's are now like playdough now she's on Gaviscon

Aptimil poo smells fishy!!!!
Cos the formula has fish oil in it..nice :puke:

Fab thread, it's good to have some support for bottle feeding mums.

Dexter's poo looked like an explosion in a yellow paint factory yesterday!

He takes his bottles at room temp which is fab - we sterilise 6 bottles and add the boiled water then just add the powder when needed and shake. We're using Cow & Gate.

He's just over a week old and taking between 80 - 120ml every 3 - 4 hours....how does this compare with your los? Sometimes he'll guzzle it down and sometimes he'll take an hour to finish it. We also give him water inbetween.

Evie wasn't bottlefed until she was two weeks but when we started bottle feeding she was takig 4oz every 3 hours- now she normally has 4 8oz bottles a day (we're on a growth spurt at the mo so she's having 4 8oz bottles and 2 6oz!!).

I think my HV told me once that babies should be having 2.5 ozs of milk for every lb they weigh. Evie is just over 12lb so that would 30 oz- on an average day she takes 32 so that's about right...

80-120 sounds fine. We don't usually give Becky water unless it's hot or if she's constipated (which hasn't happened yet, touch wood!). I've found unless she's hot and sweaty and really needs it, she'll want to down a whole bottle of water and then decide she doesn't want her next feed! But then she's a faffer

How can I get Jaida to take more at a feed? She has between 2 and 3oz every 2 and half - 3 hours. I'd like her to have more so she goes longer in between. Sometimes she has 4oz and goes about 4 hours, but that's very rare :wall:

while she is so young its best to feed on demand- her belly is only tiny so if you give her too much she'll just sick it up or she will scream because she's got belly ache. At the moment Evie is taking 8 ozs every 2.5-3 hours so I envy you! :D

Maybe in a couple of weeks give her an extra oz before bedtime x

Unfortunately its all down to the size of bub's belly. If she only has 2 to 3oz then its because she physically cannot drink anymore. The right time to increase bottle amount is when they continually drain the feed.

As Jade says, its all about demand feeding at this stage.

leland started on 1oz !!!! then went onto 2oz and quickly 3 , he stuck at 3 for a while before moving to 4oz every 4 hours . just need a bit of time for belly to grow a bit ! feeding every 3 hours at 3 weeks is good !

Thanks for the replies.

She's not consistant though, sometimes she will only have 1oz, sometimes she will have 4 (usually 2 or 3 though).

Today she had a feed at 10 past 1, then had another at 10 past 5 (so she went 4 hours!) then had another at 20 to 10 (so that was 4 and half hours, and after all that time she only had 2oz). All the time in between feeds she's been asleep, I'm abit worried tbh.

   Don't worry it's perfectly normal- babies at that age feed when they want and sleep about 18 hours a day :D Enjoy it while you can....

Don't worry, she would wake up if she was hungry. LO used to just wake up for feeds at that age, be awake for an hour at most and then sleep until the next one, she still sleeps a lot between feeds. Make the most of being able to get things done! LO is totally random on how much she will take at a feed - sometimes she will take 9ozs, other times only about 3! The midwife at our ante natal classes summed this up as being like us, we don't eat a full meal everytime that we eat, and neither do babies! When you think of it like that it makes total sense.

:) I can completely agree with that- although yes, I loved the idea of being able to breastfeed in reality I was a happier person and Evie was much happier after we switched to formula!

Glad Isla is taking well to the bottle (Evie says it makes you hair grow; but I told her Isla doesn't need any help :D  )
