Hi ladies had a gtt on Thursday and had a letter today to say I have gestatational diabetes, I've got an appointment wed with diabetic clinic so will know more then as I don't know how high readings at or anything like that. I know I will obviously need to change my diet and have growth scans to see how big my baby is getting I was just wondering does everybody with gd have to have bby before due date, any advice and info will be really appreciated xx :)

Hi hun, welcome to the thread... I'm a bit of a newbie too as found out I had GD 3 weeks ago now. It seems that you only tend to be induced at 38 wks if youre on insulin/meds for GD. I'm currently managing GD through diet and I'm being induced on my due date if I haven't already gone into natural labour by then.

I found it a bit daunting being diagnosed at first but it's honestly fine once you get you're head around it and get used to managing it. We're all here to help offer advice anyway! xx

Hello ladies :) thought I'd pop in and see how you're all doing!! (4am's as good a time of day as any lol)

Congratulations openeyes!! Can't wait to see a pic xx

How is everyone?!

I think everyone probs knows but I had my baby on the 16th after my waters broke on their own! Daisy Amberley :) she's lovely.
Just wanted to reassure you all about the worries I had about the birth, and her health because of GD.

- induction didn't take days (I didn't contract regularly after waters)
- she isn't a giant! 7lb 3.5oz with the tiniest head ever
- she didn't get stuck halfway out
- her blood sugar levels were perfect post birth

My darling OH brought me a fat piece of chocolate cake to the hospital...but I saved it til we got home, put it in the microwave and had it with ice cream. And it was f***ing AMAZING

Anyway, I will keep popping in to see how you're all getting on! xxxx

Aw lovely to hear from you PP and thank you for the reassuring words, it really does help :)

Congratulations again hun, hope you're enjoying being a mummy?

It's really good that your blood sugars didn't effect the baby when born. Did they get you breastfeeding straight away...did she take ok? Just curious as the hospital keep reinforcing to me how important the first feed & regular feeds are because of the GD.

What was Daisy's estimated weight hun? Just wondered how far out they were as I know the scans aren't completely accurate. Random people have started saying 'not long to go now ?' because I look so huge and when I say 7 weeks left they look shocked....it's getting me down because I'm worried how big bubs is gonna get.

Enjoy lots of cuddles with Daisy! xxx

Ps - I imagine that chocolate cake was heaven! Ive started really craving sweet stuff...went to a party last night & everyone had birthday cake except me :( Can't wait for that first post birth sweet treat!!!!!

I really am enjoying it! She's just so cute, I even laughed when she puked all over my boobs a min ago... lol maybe it's the sleep deprivation :)

Yeah, she fed pretty quickly - I had to have stitches so wasn't going anywhere fast! She suckled for ages it seems, was really nice. When I was on the postnatal ward, the midwives were really good about coming round and waking me to feed her (she was zonked out!) so that maintained her levels nicely.

They estimated her at 4lb 8oz at 31 weeks, but didn't give an estimate at 35 weeks. I asked MW why not and she said that it may be because her measurements were ok, but that the estimates were really unreliable anyway because they basically use each separate measurement combined, and of course those measurements depend on so many factors!
I can sympathise with people commenting on bump size - EVERYONE was saying how big I was. It's really hard not to worry, I know. All I can say is that you really can't tell until that little baby pops out - so it's really best to try and stay calm about it. Maybe ask your midwife what she thinks? When she's feeling your tummy to check baby's position etc, just ask her if it feels big to her (she will have felt hundreds of babies!) - my MW said all along that Daisy didn't feel small, but she didn't feel huge either. That was reassuring to me! Might help put your mind at rest or help you feel more prepared if she does think baby's a bit on the big side.

Just know that you'll both be ok tho sweet, they will take extra good care of you and you'll be in the best place xxx

Hi girlies! Sorry for the delay, but here is a picture of my gorgeous boy <3

I had a really good labour. Was only in labour for about 3 hours. Started contracting at about 11pm Friday night. Waters broke naturally at about 11:30pm. Went down to delivery at midnight and Riley was born at 1:57am! This sounds so stupid, but I was in so much pain that I forgot to ask for pain relief?! So he was born with just gas and air!

Also been told to stop all insulin and levels testing as well. All my sugar levels whilst I was in the hospital were fine, so fingers crossed thats the diabetes gone!

Oh, and to those worried about having massive babies, I was told Riley was 7lb13oz at my last scan..... and he was only 8lb1&1/2oz when he was born! And I only had minimal tearing as well!

Hope you are all doing well and am looking forward to hearing about your little ones :)

And PP, so glad to hear you and lo are doing good. And I had cake too. Yesterday. With a great big dollop of cream. It was incredible!! :D

Aw thanks for your reassuring words, it really helps :)

I'm so glad you're getting on well with your little one and shes taken to feeding so well, that's brill!

My LO was measuring 4lbs 9oz at 32 weeks so hopefully she'll be a similar size to Daisy :)

Enjoy being a mummy and lots of cuddles!!! Can't wait! xx

Aw, OE he's gorgeous...look at all that blonde hair bless him!

Really pleased to hear you're both doing well and had a good labour.

It's good to hear your bloods are back to normal...can't wait to treats again...crisps and chocolate....mmmm!!! xx

Heya, wondering if anyone can shed any light on this. I had my GTT at 25 weeks which showed I didn't have it. Past 5ish midwife appts (starting from 31 weeks) I have had traces of glucose in my urine plus i have had a growth scan and its confirmed I am carrying a large baby and measurements are consistent to those that have gestational diabetes. So I got a call just now saying they need to retest me ASAP so got an appt tomorrow. Was wondering if this has happened before and also if it does show I have it, what are thy likely to do as I am so late on in the pregnancy (37+2)? Xxx

Hi hun, I have GD but I'm a bit of a newbie so not entirely clued up on these things! As far as I know they only induce as early as 38/39 weeks if you have GD and are on meds (ie insulin) to manage it. I'm currently managing on diet only so am being induced on due date, sweep a week before. If I go onto insulin that will all be brought forward.

My LO is measuring above average, 4lbs 9oz at 32 week scan but these scans aren't that accurate.

I never had glucose in my urine but hopefully someone else might be able to offer some more advice hun. Hope this helps xx

Thankyou :D. If they do wanna induce, would I have enough time to change diet and stuff :S
They didn't estimate a wait for mine but measured the lengths and width and baby has a large abdomen and head which they said is usually just like womens babies when they have GD.
It's only been traces each time do hopefully it's just something minor although being induced would stop all this false labour lol. Thankyou :D I will keep you updated when get results. Feeling the hunger now :( haha xxx

Good luck with your GTT today hun. My LO has a slightly bigger head and tummy measurement compared to FL because of the GD so I guess that could be a marker but doesn't necessarily mean you've got it.

If you have got it then I think it'll be worth changing your diet for the last 2/3 weeks as I guess it could help prevent bubs putting on too much more & will help stabilise your blood sugars before labour. Best to see what your result comes back as first though hun... you might be fine. A friend who is 38 weeks has been estimated an 11 lber and she was sent for a second GTT at 38 weeks but it came back clear, a large baby doesn't always mean GD.

Good luck anyway...keep us posted xx

Fingers crossed for results tomo! I will keep you updated :D I'm just happy I can eat again! I was getting so hungry! Lol. Xxx

Tapatalking so I can't see sigs x

Hi ladies, so I went to the diabetic class today and got my monitor and know what should and shouldn't eat etc. hoping to diet control this as my read after drinking the lucozade at Gtt was 8.4 so not too high.

Was just wondering what snacks to you all have apart from fruit? And was anybody else really hungry at first?? Xx

Hi Libbygrace :)

That reading isn't too bad at all so fx you can manage on diet and exercise!

Snack wise, I used to have oatcakes with a bit of cheese, slice of granary toast + butter (i bought the warburtons multiseed batch, but the small size loaf), carrot sticks, sugar snap peas, cherry tomatoes, low cal crisps like quavers or pom bears were ok for me but you might be different! Trial and error at the beginning :)

I was quite hungry to start with but I used to have big portions of veg at mealtimes to fill up.

Good luck with it! xx
