The Gestational Diabetes support thread

I usually have a plain hobnob or piece of toast before bed which seems to do the trick!

I feel horrendous when my levels are too low, I start shaking, sweating, heaving and feeling very out of it like I'm going to pass out x usually hypos only happen with medication, they can happen sometimes without but not often apparently? X My morning reading was under 6 today! Woohoo it was 5.9 x usually still up around 7 x

How's everyone doing today? Xx

Good thanks LYL! Congrats on your low reading

Going to OH's auntie's today for roast lamb - not worried about that too much as I've had a couple of roasts and my readings have been fine - it's the hundreds of nibbles and inevitable chocolate eggs that will be offered around before and after lol! Must be strong :/

Hope everyone has a Happy Easter!

xxx

Aw, congrats on the low reading LY & have a lovely time at your aunties PP, roast dinner yummy!

We're going to a 40th party this afternoon & Ive decided to eat beforehand. I'm guessing the food will be normal party, high-carb stuff...boo :(

Happy Easter all! xxx

So, today is a really crap day already. I'm moving house on Tuesday, so of course, I'm stressing. I was starving this morning, so instead of one bit of toast, I had two. I did my 8 units of novorapid before I ate. Just did my post breakfast reading and it was 9.4. So, of course, cue me ending up in tears. I honestly don't think I'm going to be able to manage moving house, managing my GD and trying to keep my stress levels in check without going into early labour!

Aw openeyes, really sorry you are feeling so low :( dont be hard on yourself, youre doing a fab job - just try and take everything in your stride and not fret over it, itll all be ok in the end!

I usually find roasts are quite good for my levels, its a decent meal if you think about it - quite balanced really with all that veg. We had a lush one today, roast pork! Dd who is 6 ate a huuuuuge plateful and then went out to play on her trampoline, how she does it i'll never know, and just a bit of her energy would be soooo welcome!!

I havent had any chocolate so far today, might have a little bit later on though as a treat.

Im so glad its not just me forgetting to do my levels etc, i was feeling awful about it! The diabetic nurse said that i need to stop all medication as soon as the baby is born but continue monitoring for 2 days. Im really hoping that it is just gestational as i dont think i could do this for the rest of my life - although if i do then i suppose i will just be getting on with it like everything else eh!

Happy easter anyway everyone! x

Happy today iv had gd levels only once went ôver 8 which after high day yesterday is gd so I'm a happy bunny on Easter Sunday :)

Thanks DaisyDoo :) My post lunch was 5.5, so I managed to get settled, thank god. Not had dinner yet, so don't know what that reading will be. Esp as I'm having a takeaway tonight!

Glad you have had a good day Clarebear :)

Just a quick questions for you ladies.... do you have any guidelines as to when to ring the diabetes midwife? For example, I'm supposed to ring if I have 3 high readings, so matter how far apart or close together they are, but for the most part I don't bother, because I usually know why the reading is high. Do you ring the midwife whenever you get a certain number of high readings?

im to ring them if i get 3 or more in a row of under 4.5 or over 8 but so far they level out if i eat the right things to set them back in the right levels. but the clinic also ring me every 3 days to get my readings and alter my dose of insulin if needed. they r calling me on tuesday as its holiday weekend. then im back in on wednesday. have to admit they r being fantastic keeping a close eye on me

Aww openeyes, sorry you had a crappy day but good that it turned out ok in the end. How was it after the takeaway?

I had a good day yesterday :) going to a different auntie's for a buffet tea tonight... I'm pretty sure I'll be ok - it's usually cold meats, jacket potato, coleslaw, salads etc etc so nothing too carby/sugary.

I haven't got instructions to ring the clinic specifically but if anything freaky was going on I would do. The GD MW phoned me week before last and left a msg cos I was at work, but then she's busy alllll the time so it's hard to get hold of her! I think I'll call her this week just for an update.

Daisy - I am so scared of having to do this forever! I really love food! Especially carbs

Tbh, after the takeaway it was only 6.5. So all in all, it was a pretty good day :) Just a small blip in the morning!

The diabetic midwife has never phoned me! As I said, I can usually pinpoint why a reading has been high, and it's usually my own fault, so I'll end up having a corrective dose of insulin.

How's everyone doing?

Thought I'd share my first ever reading after my dinner....6.1! Really pleased, I had no idea what it would be. I'll have to do a food diary so that I remember what works and what doesn't.

Quick question too....whilst I was waiting for the hour to be up to test, I wondered whether I could have my usual decaf cuppa. I didn't in case it effected the result as I remembered they asked me to try not to drink even water during my GTT test. Do you know girls?

xx

Woo nice reading 6.1! :) and great news that your scan was a-ok.

I don't purposely limit my drinks after meals... But then I only drink water or sugar free squash anyway. You could always try it and see what happens, or ring your GD midwife and ask her? If you don't have sugar in your tea you'll probably be fine. Not sure for definite tho!

I want Pizza!!!! And chocolate! And and and and lots of things I can't have :(

I have drinks in the hour wait babe but nothing with sugar in it xxx

Thanks girls :) I only have milk in my tea so I'll give it a go, hopefully it won't effect things.

Yes funnily enough I've been craving a bit of chocolate, just a taste! DH has been scoffing his Easter eggs in front of me....not fair :(

Anyone tried any diabetic icecream? We get an asda online shop so I just typed in 'diabetic' to see if they sell any diabetic products and just ice cream came up (Franks diabetic vanilla) xx

Hey girls! How are we all doing?

My readings have been a bit all over the place the past couple of days. Me and oh are currently in the middle of moving. Well, we have moved out of his parents house and are now starting the long task of unpacking in our lovely new flat! So my eating has gone out of the window a little.

If anyone gives that diabetic icecream a go, let me know what it's like! I read the label on it and it seemed to have more sugar than some of the ice cream you can normally buy..... which is why I have just been having normal ice cream.

i got told to watch out when buying the food labeled for diabetics as there is hidden sugars etc so always read the labels first

I want Pizza!!!! And chocolate! And and and and lots of things I can't have :(

I feel your pain :( I really want a Chinese takeaway, creamy mash potato, McDonald's, cheesy chips, haribo, chocolate - you name it, I'd happily eat it  oh well, not long to go now. Need to start working on evicting bubs haha!

Other than that  everything's alright! Enjoying the sunshine, just wish it would warm up a bit.

Sorry you're a bit all over the place openeyes, but it's to be expected with the stress of moving!

Got MW today. Appointment with GD clinic next thurs where they'll give me an induction date (assuming bubs isn't already here by then!)

Does everyone have their dates for inductions/sections etc? It'll be exciting to see some babies!

Oooooh just remembered Daisy was in for section yesterday!! Hope all has gone well and she's enjoying some cuddles right now :D

From what I can tell that diabetic icecream still has loads of sugar in it, I did look and then was like not a chance! Looked at some of the ice lollys and some were 17grams of sugar + but asdas cheapo lollys were 5grams of sugar each so I bought a pack of them for the freezer x

Not long to go now Petit! Bet you're really excited xxx my sugars have been a bit crazy too, my over nights are good now, they have been under 6 for the last 3/4 days but my breakfast readings are still a bit mad x yesterday my reading was 12.2 and that was with 10 units of novorapid insulin ^.^ but then I started dropping like crazy, within 35 minutes I had dropped to 6.8 and was still dropping like mad, it made me feel poorly crashing so fast, had I not eaten then I'd have carried on to hypo rates :( its madness x had good lunch and tea readings though x

I have a scan and review on Monday so going to see how things go and ask them what the plan is as I doubt there's any chance of birthing naturally now. I have had a previous emergency section, also am on medication for gestational hypertension and now with this on top I just think it will be a bit crazy x I think buba is massive too, this last week or so she feels so heavy in my tummy x just hope she's okay x

Hope all you ladies are having a good day today <3 hugs x
