The Gestational Diabetes support thread

Aaah that's good, I'm really glad you're starting to feel better, it's absolutely rotten feeling like this!

My after breakfast reading was 9.5 with the insulin but I've had another hypo today. Didn't eat for 2 hours and my levels went to 3.3 half a glass of milk and two sugar tablets only brought them back up to 4 so I had another sugar tablet thing. It really is a lot of learning isn't it? I went to test before and my new test strips wouldn't work, they have prescribed me the wrong ones! So I rang the pharmacist and they are £30 to buy :( they took pity on me though and because of the hypos and injections I need them, she let me have a pack at the prescription price (just under £8) and they should refund tomorrow when I can get a new prescription x Mad day! X

I've heard that jelly babies are the best things for hypos? x

I always used jelly babies !! Hypos are horrible as it takes ages to recover and can make you feel really rotten :( xx

Hi ladies I had my gtt on thurs an had no fone call so thought everything was fine till I got home from work today telling me I had it an needed to go to hosp today not much good when I'm at work so got to go on Thursday I'm really worried as I have no idea what this is so I'm going to be doing some reading on here any advice would be great

Hello again

On Thursday you'll most likely be given a little kit to test your blood sugar levels, and be given advice on what food choices to make and what to avoid etc. Try not to worry too much, they'll take extra good care of you, you'll get extra scans to check on baby which is lovely, and you might get to meet them a little bit early lol.

I was so upset and scared when I found out I had it, thought I was going to have all kinds of problems, but I've managed to keep my sugars pretty regular just with diet, and am now on metformin just as a back up and to help baby once born :)

All the ladies here have really helped me get my head round it all - it can be very frustrating but just keep in mind that even if you're doing everything right, sometimes you might need some medicine to help you and baby

xx

Hi Hun thanks for reply I'm shocked an worried as I dnt know what to expect but hopefully will know more on Thursday an will be having a good read of this thread xx

Guess which numpty took the wrong insulin last night  and has only just realised? Yup :(

No I don't think so, the novo rapid is out of your system in about 4 hours completely as far as I know but I can't believe my brain was so silly :( thankfully I ate something after the injection because otherwise I could have had a hypo in my sleep :( eep x

They increased both my insulins to 8 units yesterday, just can't believe how daft I was xxx

I need to sit down an read this thread fully because I havnt a clue what hypo is or does an what I need to eat an not eat I'm so confused I'm hoping after thurs I won't feel as dumb lol because I honestly know nothing an I'm really worried il do it all wrong prob just me being silly :(

Clare that was me a few days ago x I've only been injecting since Friday and am still finding my way around the readings etc but if I can help in any way I will do <3 a hypo is when your blood sugars drop too low as opposed to being high and needs to be treated fast with an intake of sugar, so dextrose tablets, half a cup of orange juice, half a cup of milk etc or some of the girls have said jelly babies work well xxxx

So, I think I just did something a bit silly. I've been feeling like crap today, so didn't fancy my usual peanut butter sanwich and low fat yoghurt, I needed something to cheer myself up. So I had an M&S chicken and bacon sandwich and half a dairy milk instead. I regret it already! Dread to think what my reading is going to be in an hours time....

Hello all, Please forgive the silly question especially if it has been asked before - but a 69 page thread is a lot of information to read through.... is it possible to have GD without anything showing in the urine? Wouldn't that be the first red flag that would then lead to a GTT? Or am I way off base? could GD be a problem with urine being completely clear?
:)

I'm not any sort of expert, but my urine always came back clear before I had my GTT. Strangely enough, it was only after my GTT that glucose started popping up in my urine! I was given a GTT due to my bmi, rather than any tests coming back funny.

I constantly had glucose in my urine hun so I don't know sorry xxx ask for a test if you feel symptomatic xxxx

I haven't had any glucose in my urine, my GTT was because of BMI and family history xx

The only symptom I've had so far is a seemingly large baby. I have highish BMI and family history, but they said test was unnecessary because it wasn't high enough, and urine dip is constantly negative for sugar and protein... but because bub is big, they are now talking about it. Doing the test doesn't worry me, I was just curious why nothing would show in my wee :D

Glucose is processed by your kidneys. Normal kidneys+normal blood sugar levels=no glucose in your urine. Diabetics get such high glucose levels in their blood that the kidneys cant cope and often the glucose spills into the urine. However not all diabetics get glucose in their urine, especially early on. It could be because your kidneys are extra good at coping with your high blood sugar levels or it could be that your GD is mild and your diet is doing a good job of stopping your blood sugar from getting out of control.

Are you on medication Clare? From what I understand hypos (low blood sugar) are only a problem if you are on medication. If you artificially supply your body with insulin you have to make sure you are giving it enough to 'burn up' through the food you eat otherwise it can overcompensate and leave you with dangerously low blood sugar. If you are not taking medication and just trying to keep your blood sugar down through diet you don't need to worry about that.

I'm not on medication yet Iv got my 1st appointment on thurs but I feel so rough no appetite I keep missing meals because I just dnt want to eat all Iv had today is breakfast an a cheese Sarnie I feel full all the time just dnt want to eat anything getting constant headaches an just so tired I'm 29 wks tomorrow
