The Gestational Diabetes support thread

Hi girls, just wanted to introduce myself. Found out today I have GD.

I have pco & bubs was measuring big on last scan so got sent for GTT.

My consultant said she'd be surprised if I have it as my waters are at normal levels and I must admit I was a bit shocked when I found out today as I tend to avoid sugar but I do eat alot of carbs in the way of brown bread, wheat free pasta & rice. I'm a healthy bmi but I have been feeling tired lately and I find I feel rough if I don't snack every couple of hours.

Hope you can all offer some advice!

xx

Seeing GD clinic next week...feel a bit overwhelmed really! Can it be controlled by diet?

Hello ladies x sorry to see you over here Bewdley :( x hope the hospital manage to help both of you <3

Some ladies on here are working purely with diet control as far as I know, some are on a tablet called metformin and some are on injections of fast acting / slow acting insulin x it is a lot to get your head around but at least we know what's wrong and can work at keeping it under control x have they spoken to you about what they would like you to do? Xxx hugs xxX

Thanks LY! Hope you're doing ok hun? I haven't been on the forum too much lately so hope you're ok. Do you have GD?

Im attending a GD clinic on tues so will know more then. I believe I'll have to start testing my sugar levels daily and try to control things through diet initially buy I'll know more once I've seen the hospital.

xx

Yeah sweetie I'm on two different types of insulin now x it is a lot to get your head around but it will be okay, even of you have to medicate they have found the problem and they can treat it etc x good luck for your appointment hun I'm here if you need a chat xxx

Thanks hun appreciate your support :)

It sounds good that they've found a way of controlling yours with insulin. I imagine it's a lot for you with everything else that's being going on too though. You've come so far, can't believe you're almost 33 weeks...time seems to be going quickly now!

my readings have been a bit low the past two days and im so thirsty today i just want to down a 2ltr bottle. lol but the diabetic dr was happy with my readings yesterday. due to the diabetes im being induced in 3 weeks and i was told i may have to up my insulin next week but will wait and see.

what do u do if ur readings are low, do u eat a bit of sugary food to get it back up again or just leave it. ive been eating a bit of chocolate or a banana etc.

I'm getting to the point now where I'm tired, been in an out of hospital so much I just want her here and safe x bit of a wobble again today :( sorry x my morning reading today was 6.8 even with 10 units of insulatard at night so dunno what they will do about that, my after breakfast reading with 10 units of novorapid was 11.1 :( even though I ate 40 mins after taking that reading, I still had a massive hypo :(

They told me to eat an apple (high sugar) snack mid morning to stop the hypos but it doesn't seem to be working x when I drop into a hypo I have to have something very sugary to bring me back fast, so I keep the sugar tablets in my bag hun you know the dextrose ones whatever they are called? Half a glass of milk works well as it goes straight into blood stream x And then some complex carbs within 15 mins of it happening, so sandwich etc x If I'm out I keep a small bag of cashew nuts with me for the carbs in case I can't get a sandwich etc x it gives me enough time to get some etc x what have your readings been hun? Xxx

Oh sorry you mean if they are just low(ish) readings with meals? I tend to just go with how my body feels but am noticing bad lows if I don't eat every 2(ish) hours, it's finding snacks that are long lasting but not full of sugar bah xxx

my low readings have been about 4.2 and 3.7 and thats as low as they have been. im actually learning when they r low without doing a reading as i can feel the changes in my body, its so strange the odd feelings. my reading tonight was low too so ive indulged in a chunk of chocolate and im starting to feel a bit better. so will test b4 i go to bed just to see the results.

i know what u mean about just wanting baby here safe and sound. im at the hospital so much we joke about just getting me a bed there lol. the staff r so nice tho and they have made me feel so much better about everything.

Have you tried some oatcakes? Maybe with a bit of cheese or peanut butter? Just a suggestion :)

i need a proper kick up the bum - this week has been half term where i live and i cannot for the life of me remember to check my levels!! Im getting really frustrated with myself, im booked in for a section tuesday so these last few days to me seem really crucial :(

Omg, good luck for Tuesday!!!! Let us know how it goes :)

It's easy to forget to check when you're busy with other things - I've been late for a few! Just do the best you can, you can't do more than that xx

glad its not just me forgetting. the past three days ive sat down to eat my dinner and took a bite then thought whoops im supposed to check my blood and take my insulin first. im very forgetful right now i cant even remember if i have taken the 5 tablets with breakfast or not lol

I feel absolutely awful when my bloods go under 4 babe so I sympathise completely, think my lowest so far has been 3.1 but I've had a 3.3 too, had a banana for my mid morning snack today and that seems so far to have been a lot better x How did the chocolate help? What was your night time reading? X

I think having nice staff helps more than anything x just got to make it through these next weeks and we'll all be okay <3 x

Thanks for the oat cake idea hun I will give them a try x thank you xxx

My memory is awful ATM, so as soon as I eat I set a 1 hour timer on my phone to remind me to check my levels, otherwise I'd forget every time lol x Good luck for tuesday daisy! Will be thinking of you xxxx

Can I ask how you feel when you're blood sugars are low?

I've adapted my diet the last couple of days since I found out & without being able to test my levels yet (as wont have kit until hospital appointment on tues) I'm not sure if how I feel is pregnancy related or linked to GD.

That said I was feeling like this when I was on my old diet! Just been feeling more tired & very slightly light headed like I did in tri 1. Only been experiencing this for the last week.

xx

when my levels r low i just feel off and run down. i get a feeling like ive taken strong painkillers and get that fuzzy feeling also i feel a bit detached from things like i cant concentrate or focus. ive been feeling like that all day plus the baby is making me so uncomfy and sore when i sit up so been laying down most of the day.

the chocolate gives me a boost but it dost last long and then i feel my levels dipping again. i so cant wait for this to be over

Today I'd gone 4+ hrs without food by accident (wasn't hungry!) and I had the shakes pretty bad!
But that's the only time I've felt any effects from low sugar really, apart from when I've slept in late and been absolutely hank marvin lol

Thanks girls...yes I recognise the fuzzy feeling as though you've taken painkillers.....it's a good way of describing it.

Do you have a bedtime snack at all to stabilise sugars through the night? Been googling a bit and noticed on some of the other boards ladies doing this. The last couple of nights I've had 2 oat crackers with cheese before bed...hopefully that's been helping but will know more when I can test I guess.

xx
