The Gestational Diabetes support thread

Hard to believe any hospital or doctor would say that. If they were too low they should do something about it.

Saw the diabetic nurse today and she has said i need to double the dose of tablets im on. Although my levels are only just above what theyd like they are still above it so i can completely understand why im going to be on that dose now - im just hoping i can tolerate it and not get side effects!
Some of my levels are also quite low at times which i brought up, she said they arent at all worried about that! Its apparently ok if it makes me feel a bit rubbish but baby will be very happy in there cus shes had all my sugars anyway apparently!
No sign of my csection being brought forward another week either, which of course in some ways is very very good!

Heres a question for you lovely GD ladies.... I've just been reading about hospital bag snacks in the tri3 forum and they are all talking about high sugar/energy things. What sort of things should we think about putting in our bags for when the time comes? Obviously, the last thing we are going to want is to have a hyper whilst in labour!

Did my birth plan with MW the other day and she suggested bananas, 'oaty biscuits' - I'm guessing oatcakes or maybe hobnobs? - things like that. Still giving energy but not high sugar. So slow-release carby things I guess...? That's what I'm thinking anyway!
As for drinks, Lucozade do a sugar free drink which I've bought a few of - no idea what they're like!

I was told hobnobs are a nono, even though they have oats in they are still high in sugar (was telling the diabetic nurse how much i liked them and they were on offer along sainsburys haha!)
I was told if i wanted biscuits rich teas would be ok or maybe a digestive - thats not going to help much if youre in labour though.

I was googling 'treats for diabetics' or something like that (in desperation haha) and on the Diabetes UK website it says hobnobs are fine (obviously in moderation!) - I have been having one a day and it's not effected my readings but again everyone is different :)

Ooh speaking of treats - I have been buying those pots of sugar free jelly and having those - feels like dessert!

Also thinking about it our bodies will be doing a LOT of work in labour so maybe might need slightly higher sugar things than usual? Just a thought.

Chocolate doesnt affect me, chips/crisps doesnt affect me, nor does cake or cookies..Nothing seems to affect me in a bad way :p But enjoy nomming on your jelly x

I was told to stay away from bananas!! But I eat rich teas like they are going out of fashion (I go through a packet a week) and they don't make a difference to my readings at all. Might speak to my diabetes midwife on Monday and see what she advises as well :)

 oh well ignore me then! seems yet again - everyone's different! (That is really what I'm going to take away from this whole GD experience haha)

That's probably the best idea :) she'll be able to advise you! I'm gonna do the same when I see the GD consultant on Thursday just to make sure!

I think everyone is different as well. Like some people have bran flakes for breakfast.... but if I have them then my reading shoots up!

The only other annoying thing about GD is every health authority seems to treat it differently. Some say to take readings 2 hours after meals, some say one, some say before! I wish everywhere did it the same.

You're absolutely right, everyone's bodies and severity of GD is different. I got away with eating most things and didn't need any meds, not everyone is so lucky though x

Well if hobnobs are fine for them theyre fine for us too!! Good idea to speak to the nurse though and see what she says. Im booked in for a csection so i get naff all for hours and hours on end til im called down - even water apparently which im not happy about as i get so thirsty! Im not even being put on a drip til i go down for surgery and cant have anything to eat or drink from 6am!

Consultant appointment done! Babys growth is fine. Consultant happy with everything. At my next appointment I'll get my induction date! Scary/exciting!! :D

But, of course, I forgot to ask about labour snacks!! Silly me!

Haha oh well, I'll try and remember to ask on Thursday when I see my consultant!

Good news about baby! :)

It is indeed :) I am happy. He has gone from being a bit porky to being average. Never thought I'd be ok with the word "average" haha :D

Hi ladies x just after a bit I advice really if anyone can help? I have had 3 GTTs this pregnancy all have come back fine ^.^ the thing is so did my sisters and she had gestational diabetes but it only showed up when testing her sugars numerous times a day x

I have been constantly thirsty for weeks, pains around kidneys in my back, heavin loads being sick lucosytes in water and lots of keytones, been treated for 2 UTIs and upon further lab testing no infection has been found. Thing is I feel awful physically, tired, headaches, sickness etc x I know this can be normal in pregnancy and I have bp problems anyways but it's more than that :( x glucose shows up virtually every time my urine is tested, was seen in clinic today and have a fast tracked appointment to see the diabetic consultant tomorrow afternoon. The thing is on jellytots growth scan today she has gained 600 grams on her estimated weight in 2 weeks? She has gone from an estimate of 1274 grams to 1885 grams in exactly 2 weeks and that's only from 28 / 30 weeks x that seems like one massive increase and online all I can find is in the last 4 weeks they gain about 28grams a day, so for 28/30 weeks this seems like a massive jump? I know growth scans are not always fantastically accurate but if anyone has any advice / similar experiences I would be grateful x thanks. Xxx

Hello!

I don't really know what to suggest - I'm by no means an expert - but from what you've said it sounds like you may be following in your sister's footsteps! It's good that they've booked you in at the diabetes clinic - hopefully they'll be able to give you a straight answer yes or no.

I'm not sure about growth rates or anything... although that does sound a big jump.

Hope it goes well today, keep us updated :) x

Are you still monitoring your sugars? it would be a good thing to carry on doing so you can show them whats been happening and explain that you are very concerned.
Im not sure about measurements either but if you can convince them that you do have GD then id imagine they will do another growth scan on you anyway at around 34weeks? Its so frustrating when you are sure you have one thing and all the professionals are saying you havent - i was like this with my spd, just stick to your guns!

openeyes, fab news about your growth scan! your dd will remain the same as before now will it?

its been a bit quiet on here the last few days! i had weetabix for my breakfast on sunday as we'd ran out of bread, had weetabix with raspberries and blueberries - lets just say my levels went through the roof so i am back on toast again now! who wouldve thought that boring old weetabix could do that!!

To be honest I don't have a clue what's going on but they have got me an appointment within a day for the diabetic specialist so I am hoping for some answers today, even if it's not GD an answer as to why I feel so bad and why she's grown too much you know? Thanks for the advice ladies x I'm really thankful for the advice x
