The Gestational Diabetes support thread

GTT booked for tomorrow morning. In preparation for it I've had a fairy cake today as I'm pretty sure sweet treats will be off limits until baby is born. :)

Can someone explain this maybe :) So I have GD but no diet or whatsoever yet (midwife's fault etc) they knew I had it with 32 weeks and Im almost 37 weeks now BUT it doesnt effect the baby at all (its even a little bit small for 36+ weeks) so I have it NOT UNDER CONTROL (cause I dont have a dietplan or a glucose meter) but it doesnt harm lo..Anyone know why?

I have no idea Kaala! Might be worth asking your mw if she can explain it?

To be honest I thought I was starting to understand it but this morning I had exactly the same as I do every day, plain shredded wheat with ss milk and a glass of sugar free squash. Just took my after breakfast reading and it was 7.7?????? So I thought bugger that, that can't be right so went and washed my hands again, tested again and it went down to 6.6! Which is fine, but it's still high for me for this time of day! I don't get it!

So what I am taking away from this today is:

1) Make sure you wash your hands really well (without soap) before testing
2) Just because something was fine yesterday apparently doesn't mean it will be today!

Oh i did the washing hands thing last night! Went up to bed early to watch tv and washed them before i went to bed thinking it would be alright until i did the test, in half an hour i checked my levels to find it was 10.2!!! Did it again after washing them and it went down to the normal range - shocked me a bit though as i had a very boring tea! It felt a bit unfair, a bit like if you go to a slimming club and you know youve been good and you still put on haha!

Oh good lol glad it's not just me!! I know, I was like, there is no cereal more boring than plain shredded wheat for god's sake! About to do my post-lunch reading so let's see what surprises that brings up...

I just went from being +6 KG to +3 Kg..Lost 3kg, I blame the diet I dont have xD

It's not just the size of the baby that's affected! There are a number of risks with GD :( I would defo go back to your midwife and not leave until she tells you what's going on! If you have GD you have a right to proper care Hun xx

She doesnt know either!

What are the other risks btw?

The extra sugar can break down the placenta, your baby could produce extra insulin to fight off the sugar you're not breaking down and it MAY cause problems when it's born. If your midwife doesn't know, but she's told you you've got GD then I would contact the hospital ASAP and 1) find out what you're meant to be doing and 2) report your rubbish midwife ;( xx

I have an appointment tomorrow :) So I will hear everything by then I guess ^^

She doesnt know whether or not I have GD cause she dont know my readings btw x

Oh right ok that's fair enough. I'm sure you woul have been informed by now if you had it as they don't tend to mess about xx

Let us know how you get on at your appointment Kaala!

Okay well basically, I have to check my readings tomorrow and if they're normal I dont have to worry about it at all because they are not really sure if I have it because it doesnt effect the kid (also, Im 37 weeks now :D Hooraay)

I had a check yesterday and ive been put on a slow release form of metformin (cant tolerate the normal one). She said my levels spike too much for her to ignore and she wants to avoid any kind of dip in the babys insulin levels when shes born so thinks i need to take something to help control it.
On one of the days my levels shot up and i had the most boring food day ever! Pointed this out to her and she said it was probably a day where the placenta was making more insulin. If thats the case then surely it cant be controlled by diet alone in any case? Shouldve asked but it was one of those annoying things you think of when you have left them!
Baby is measuring larger than normal but still in the normal range if that makes sense, so theyre not bringing my section forward to 38wks

I know what you mean about thinking of questions after you've left DaisyDoo! Happens to me all the time  well at least they're looking after you well, and bubs is growing nicely!

I've just got back from my appointment with GD consultant, she was really pleased with my readings and is happy that I'm managing it with diet/exercise so that's good. Asked her about baby size and she was like 'it's fiiiiine absolutely normal' lol so that was a relief (after yesterday mw scared me a bit implying I'd have a huge baby haha), and she said that she'll see me again after my scan in 2 weeks and if everything's still going well she can discharge me! Fingers crossed :)

I don't quite get what you're saying... All the way through this post you keep saying that they not sure you have it because your baby is normal size?? That is just one of the thins it affects so not sure they could make diagnosis on that???

FYI I had GD with really high levels and was insulin controlled towards the end and my baby was only 7lb4???

OK, so hoping maybe someone can shed some light on this?

My reading first thing was 5.1 which is fine, then I had breakfast as normal (plain shredded wheat with ss milk and a glass of sugar free squash) as I do every day, then drove to work. Did my blood test 2 hrs after breakfast and it was 7.1. I know it's not a huge spike or anything but just wondering why it would be higher when I have done everything exactly the same as I usually do? I would usually have tested again to make sure but I'm running out of strips and got to last the weekend before my new prescription is ready.
I'm sure it's probably just one of those things but it's frustrating when I haven't done anything wrong and also such a comedown after feeling so positive yesterday. Sorry just really annoyed me!

Could be anything Hun. You may have picked up a temperature or you just maybe at the point where your levels are just rising :( unfortunately the further into pregnancy you get sometimes can increase your levels as the pancreas starts to struggle :( you may just find its just an odd day xxx

Thanks Jaxx. Suppose I'll just have to carry on as normal and see what happens. Let's hope it was just an odd day! This stuff is so frustrating xxx
