MMR jab?!

Of course you should always be able to trust your GP and the advice that they give you. Unfortunately both OH and myself have had bad experiences with our GP, and dont really have any faith in him. My experience with health visitors is also tainted as per my post above. The doctor who gives the single jabs to my LO is a consultant paediatrician with almost 40 years of experience in paediatric medicine, so when he tells me that the MMR is not the best way to go about getting LO vaccinated, I am inclined to believe him.

This is my problem. All the gps at my surgery are next to useless. They have misdiagnosed me so many times. When I was 6 months pregnant, but measuring 8 months coz of polyhydramnios, I was sitting with a doctor who asked why I had stopped taking the pill, I said to try for a baby. She looked right at me and seriously asked me 'how's it going so far?'. I thought she was joking, but she wasn't. She hadn't even noticed I looked full term pregnant  Another put me on antibiotics for a cyst, that wasn't a cyst. Another told me I was imagining having cystitis and another told me to 'calm down and get over it' when I was having an allergic reaction and my face had all swollen up and I was almost covered in hives!!

Sorry, went off on a tangent there, but needed to get that rant out lol

I think a lot of it is the current trend of GP's not having select patients and instead it being a sort of 'free for all' so they dont really get to know people properly... All drugs have contraindications and there are signs within a person about wether they would be acceptable for treatment, but doctors are taught to just give whatever the latest 'answer' is for a problem and not to look for signs that there might be a problem with the patients reaction.

With the MMR, i worry that because it is given so young, there is no chance for the child to display behavioural, dietary or other problems that might prove the contraindications will be a problem.

i belive whole heartedly there is no link between the mmr vaccine and autism its just sadly children with autism start to display autistic traits around the time they are immunised against MMR amelia will be having her MMR jab and just follow ur heart x

Then why not wait a year?

because im her mum and im making the decision not to risk the wait.

Just wanted to say thanks everyone! I've made decision to have them done separate, just as peace of mind and do LO is still immunised! Just going to have measles jab for now x

I'm not 100% but i dont think they will give you the measles jab until LO is 2... maybe its just 18mnths...
dc
If i were you i would phone the company you want to do the seperates (Inky had a great experience with a place, i dont know if they are close to you) and ask them when they think the best timeframe is xxx

Cahal was almost 14 months old when he had his measles jab, and is booked in for rubella at 15.5 months on Friday :)

These guys gave a list of who gives singles, there's more choice than you'd think! X

Ah okay xx that must have been something i read about a different country :)

Nice one Inky will check out that list as we will need it (though not until Jasper goes to nursery xx)

I'm getting worried as I can't find anywhere that does them singularly and local. I'm willing to drive up to 30 miles, but closest is about 60 miles away  I really don't wanna drive LO 120 mile round trip for these! I hate living in lowestoft!

Is there any near a relative or friend? you could make it a nice excuse to have a visit for a couple of days? xx

what an interesting thread, can i offer my experience ( please dont see this as me saying dont get the jab )

My neighbours boy was about 2 i think when he had the jab, walking starting to talk all the normal functions of a child, after the jab he regressed into full blown autism ( i am not sure if i worded that right sorry if it offends ) and now doesnt communicate at all he cant look after himself and has to live under supervison 24/7. Now i am not saying the jab did that ( and neither did the doctors ) but his parents do think it did

My partner also has aspergers so i am interested in anything to do with autism and this seems a grey area with reagrds to the actual proof on the matter.

However i do believe it is totally u p to the parent, and dont judge anyoine who choses to take thier child to have this and i dont want to scare anyone eep! Just thought i wou;d share what i have experienced with this topic xxxxx

there are SO many stories like that lynette... complete regression in 24hrs after having it.

I know a few children in the same boat :(

No, everyone is either in Lowestoft or Norwich. I think a friend of MILs paid for her son to have them separate so will speak to her when I see her Friday, if I'm wrong about that I will speak to my surgery about it, they must know if there is anywhere close that does it. I'm happy to go to Norwich (which is 30 miles away), but that's all. I hate LO being stuck in a car for too long.

We made a day of it lol! We went to Sutton Coldfield which is about 60 miles LO was so well afterwards we went shopping and for lunch then visited family while we were there :)

I am the same, closest place for us is London :S

which is at least an hours drive away and then tube journey's etc

fortunately we have friends living there so we will just go and stay overnight and see a bit of london :)

I'm not loving the argumentative nature of this thread, but I do want to add something interesting that's come up recently in education news (I'm a teacher and therefore have quite a lot of contact with pupils on the Autistic Spectrum, and I previously worked in an ASD class) - they found that autism most likely is formed in a part of the brain that is actually developed in the womb. Therefore, autism and it's associated disorders may indeed already be an underlying condition by the time they are born, and it only becomes apparent at a certain age/ stage of development.
This is still very new information, and needs a lot more research (as well as the fact that the study was only done in boys, and although it is mostly boys that display characteristic of autism, I don't think it's a fair study without removing extraneous variables such as gender), but it's something that is very interesting to parents and teachers of children on the autistic spectrum. It could completely change the way we look at it.

I am not discrediting any individuals experiences, or studies carried out on the effects of the mmr jag, and I'm not saying I agree either way whether it does or it doesn't. I'm just sharing some information I thought was really interesting :)

I feel mums that have chose to have the mmr have been bashed in this thread and I almost feel like a bad mother for choosing to vaccinate my kids. I have said it before everyone has a right to choose how they vaccinate the end result is the same. I don't like it been made out that because I have given my children the mmr that I have some how subjected them to a potential illness.

I dont think anyone has directly or indirectly suggested anyone else is bad or whatever for choosing to vaccinate or not vaccinate.

I question the authorities reason for vaccinating so much and so young, not the parents who follow guidelines because really, they should be able to trust those guidelines.

I have been accused of 'scare mongering' etc for talking about my own experiences with children and the MMR, however i think its best to just not take things personally, tis an emotive subject which many people will have strong views on and it is possible to have a debate without getting personal or feeling personally attacked...

I think the OP has got a lot from this thread which is 100% the point.

You are absolutely right to feel put out if someone ever accused you of making the wrong decision for your child. That's what being a mother is all about, making the decisions that are needed to help children grow and develop into happy healthy people. Anyone who outright says you are wrong to want to vaccinate your children in the way YOU choose, should be ignored.

We are all adults who are capable of making up our own minds, knowing our own children (unfortunately not speaking as a mother here), and making a judgement based on our own values. No one should be made to feel bad for this xxx

Alfie had his, was MMR and 2 other jabs. He was mega grumpy and came out with a rash soon after, diorrhea and runny nose etc. He got quite bad after 10 days but doctor said it was a virus not to do with the jabs. The only thing I have noticed is that he used to sleep 7-7 now he is awake 3 or 4 times a night and very unsettled xxx I would rather the jab than the illnesses it protects against though xx

Im near Ipswich in Suffolk and it was offered as all 3 or individually xx
