but more than one people have now said that your not alowed to eat when you go into labour??? apparently incase you need to get an emergancy c-section. im just curious cause u can be in labour for hours. id there truth in this or am i being wound up? :)

I have no idea but I can't remember if I ate or not! Lol x I might be wrong but I don't think they pit you under general anaesthetic for a c-section so you should be able to eat (maybe?!) x oh god I don't know! Lmao

I ate while in labour with DD but had to have an op straight after giving birth and wasn't allowed to eat before that! I'm sure you can eat cos you need the strength!

i thought it sounded a bit odd but just wanted to check. ta :) x

I had an emergency C section and had been eating all the way through labour. it wasnt a problem because i had an epidural rather than a GA. The only time its a concern is with a GA.

xx

even with GA they do these in emergency cases without fasting somebody as such... find out what your local hospital policy is...

it used to be 'nil by mouth' in the days when women werent really considered as more than just a object and if ANY hospital tells you your 'not allowed to eat' during labour i would swiftly tell them to piss right off!

you might be in labour for HOURS! you need to keep your strength up so make sure you have some digestable snacks avaliable in your hospital bag, i am going to have a home birth but will be stocking the fridge with yogurts, fruit and nice things so i can boost my strength if/when i need it.

its YOUR body so remember that, when your in hospital you are there because they are Giving YOU a service, your not to pander to their whims they are there to pander to yours!

I would say check their policy but I agree with BigBump, you need to eat during labour for your strength

:yay: this will be my new mantra!!!:)

My hospital don't allow you to eat in labour, they give you a pill to stop you getting heart burn. I took my own food in tho and ate on the sly, i'm a naughty girl lol xx

I have to say i have never felt like eating in labour and was sick with my first so didn't even go there with the next two. Just go with the flow like the ladies said if your in labour for hours you'll have to have something to keep your strength up, but my advice would be to keep it light!

I wasn't allowed to eat in labour, I asked for a banana I had with me and my MW said no! I think it depends on the hospital, might be worth a check so you can be prepared xx

hmmm, i'll ask my MW when i see her. i dont think i can last without food!!! :( i'll keep my fingers crossed.

well really depriving your body of energy when you need it most is kind of setting you up for a fall, and yes, then a woman might well end up so exhausted that she needs a c-section. The doctors can smugly say "just as well you didnt eat, or you might have been sick whilst in surgery" bloody doctors!!

I think its terrible - I will be eating what I feel like to keep my strength up. People have to have emergency surgery all the time and they obviously dont have to starve!

Yes exactly! we allow these people to dictate how we as women push children out but we women have been pushing children out for a damn sight longer than there has been an NHS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would you ask someone to run a marathon without water NO
Would you ask someone to go 8 HOURS OF WORK WITHOUT FOOD NO

i have stopped myself replying to this topic because its actually made me quite angry, why on EARTH would you ALLOW someone with no knowledge of YOUR BODY tell you when you can and cannot eat during labour! its not bloody about them its about YOU and what YOU need!

all this 'i will check with the midwife' rubbish, check with yourself, what do YOU NEED and make them bend to that, dont bend yourself to draconian practices 'just incase' because actually as many people have pointed out, that is setting yourself up for a fall.

Grrrrrr

if you eat and need GA which has happened me it just means you will get v nauseous and vomit lots lol pleasant i know. in my hosp you stay on the ward as long as u can so u can eat they recommend getting a feed in the early stages at my antenatal lol but once you go in labour suite and delivery suite no food cos of contamination :) xx

yes because the reports of women suffering infections due to eating a banana during labour are plentiful arent they!

How exactly is someone going to PREVENT you from taking a sandwich out of your bag and bloody eating it? They are hardly going to tie you up and section you are they

my advice, if you really are planning to attend a draconian hospital where they dont allow you to eat, simply stash some food in your bag and eat it anyway, if you get caught they MIGHT send you to the headmasters office but i bloody doubt it.

Also if you dont eat during labour to keep your strength up when your body tells you too, you are FAR more likely to need medical intervention, up to and including c-section

ITS YOUR BODY, YOU CALL THE SHOTS
