I forgot completely to start a pregnancy journal, by the time I thought about it I kinda felt it was too late! So at least starting my parenting journal now before I forget bits!

Theo is 3 days old now just about, he was born on 1st August 2017 at 1422, weighing 6lb 15.5oz, 9 days early!

I will write more about labour and the past 2 days more when it's not 2am :) for now, here's a photo of Theo and I aged 2 days:

Amazing Charli, I'm so pleased for you. He's absolutely gorgeous and you look fab! Xx

So my birth story! It all happened quite quickly and feels a little dramatic! I will be quite frank with the gory details so that's just a little warning for you haha. Because I have a rubbish memory and some bits are difficult to piece together I am just gonna be as detailed as possible.

So here goes...

Monday night I was just reading my book, as you do, and decided at about 1am to finish up and go to sleep. No hint anything was happening, just a normal night. Went straight off to sleep as far as I can remember. I then got woken up by a pain at about 245, I was just lying there half asleep thinking 'ouch what did I eat? Feels like a no2 pain!'. So I got up to go and see to that, to find that I was really wet and gooey I guess. So at this point I was like oh shit, is this what waters feels like? My mucus plug also came out at this point, which was lovely!

So I called triage for advice at around 330 and they told me to stick a pad on and sit down for 30 mins and then walk around for 30 mins and then call them back to update. They also asked me if I had any contractions and I said no. So I do as I'm told, a little bit scared at this point but I didn't want to wake OH unless it was a false alarm and he had work at 7! Not a lot happened on the leakage front, but I did start getting fairly regular contractions, I guess every 10-15 minutes during the hour I had to wait.

Called triage again to let them know, they said they thought it was probably not my waters and to give them a call again if my contractions got to every 5 mins and were lasting a whole minute. So I downloaded a contraction timer and went back to bed. By this point OH was just waking up for work and I told him I thought things were starting. He started getting ready to go and open up until someone could cover him, but over the next hour the contractions got down to close to every 5 minutes, but lasting about 45 seconds mostly.

At this point I started being sick after the contractions due to the pain, I've had this during really bad periods so I wasn't surprised but I wasn't even keeping water down. As I was being sick and they were every 5 mins or so OH called triage again to see what we needed to do. They said that they weren't really lasting long enough, but if I came in they would examine me and possibly give me anti sickness drugs.

So off we trundled to the hospital, luckily at 615 ish it's a straight 10-15 minute run. We were lucky it wasn't 815 because during rush hour it's probably the busiest road in the city, it could have taken about 45 mins! During that time I had about 3 contractions, and then another once we were speaking to maternity reception. They didn't do very much to begin with as we got there just before the shift change over, so they just stuck me on the trace for about an hour. I was given oral morphine, which did nothing, and the anti sickness injection which luckily did!

After this point it all becomes a little bit hazy. I know they examined me internally at around 8 which hurt like a bitch! She thought she couldn't find my cervix and so was digging about in there, turns out this was because I was 8-9cm dilated already! At this point my OH called my mum, because she was also due to be my birthing partner, whose reaction was ‘you’re joking!’.

I’m not sure of the timings after this. I was moved into a delivery room, thankfully, as this meant I could have gas and air. Once I’d worked out how to use it this was really effective and totally took the edge off things, even if it did make me dizzy. At some point, not long after my mum arrived at about 9 ish, my waters did go, and even through the haze of the G&A it was unmistakable! It was like a biblical flood!

From then it all slowed down really, I don’t think I got to 10cm for a few hours and then I think they thought I was 10cm and told me to start pushing but really there was a tiny bit left which became inflamed. The doctor had a look and then told me to basically just stop pushing for at least an hour to see if that sorted it out. I was finally given morphine at this point, and apparently went to sleep between contractions! I was offered an epidural, but I didn’t fancy having a catheter, so this was all the pain relief I had.

The pushing stage I found very frustrating, having had only 1.5hrs max of sleep and no food I was pretty exhausted and it seemed like I was making really slow progress. His heart rate dipped a few times and my blood pressure was raised, so I had to have meds for this. Once I started pushing properly and worked out what I was doing his heart rate was fine, but I was told to either get on with it or they would have to help him out. After what felt like forever he was born at 222, I ended up needing an episiotomy and still had a 2nd degree tear!

It took a little while for them to sort me out in terms of stitches, because the way the tear and the cut were, but they got there in the end. This was also pretty painful because the local anaesthetic, didn’t seem to want to kick in at this point. At one point OH had to take Theo because I was scared I would hurt him from being in pain.

Other than the pain etc all I can remember is how bloody hot it was in that delivery room. I was a horrible sticky mess and I kept asking how many more pushes and contractions because I was so ready for it to be done! The first thing I really asked for was a shower! They made OH come in with me just in case I fainted, but I’ve never fainted before in my life and I wasn’t about to start now! All in all though I think it went really well considering and I was moved up to the ward at around 630. I realise now how lucky I was to go into labour before I was induced, and that I basically did 0-8cm without even realising it.

So that’s the story of how Theo made his entrance, so much has happened since I could probably carry on writing. But it’s currently 330 and the little man has finally settled on my chest, so I’m hoping I can put him down and get some kip myself.

Until I can get around to writing up the next bit here are some pictures from the first day:

So little Theo had his first bath today. He definitely didn't enjoy it, but I figured that 9 days was plenty! He smells all lovely and clean now, and his hair has gone fluffy :)

He is still such a 'good' baby, so docile and placid most of the time. He loves his food and his sleep. The past 2 nights we've managed to get him down just after midnight, with 1 feed/change at 4 and then again at 8. This seems so good to me and it's nice getting some sleep!! Hoping he stays so good tbh.

Hopefully we will be discharged by the midwives tomorrow, at his day 5 appt he had only lost 20g! I'll be interested to see his progress tomorrow if they weigh him. The health visitor is coming Monday, a little bit nervous about this tbh. But I know we have nothing to worry about really.

We bought a footprint kit off eBay and it arrived yesterday. OH wants a tattoo of it eventually, his feet are so teeny!

So the little man was weighed today and he has put on 270g in 5 days! What a little chunk! He definitely likes his milk :)

He's adorable charli. Well done on the weight gain that's fab!!

Loving the wee footprints. I got my hubhys finger print on my back with our wedding date and people always comment on what a nice touch it is xx

Thanks :) I reckon he's put on loads now... will go get him weighed on Tuesday and we'll see! His face has definitely rounded out.

That's a lovely idea, really different! I'm not sure if I want another tattoo but I was thinking his date of birth in Roman numerals somewhere? Not decided!

Eek it's been a while since I posted, time is going really fast. He's over 3 weeks old now!

OH went back to work on Monday, which I was dreading tbh. I kept getting teary about it all weekend. But actually it hasn't been too bad, boring mostly. Who knew daytime tv was so shite? Been a bit of an adjustment again having to do everything most of the time, I think I got spoilt cos OH was so good at doing everything 50/50 while he was off.

Drove for the first time in over 3 weeks yesterday as well, very strange driving with Theo in the back. I'm not hugely confident at driving anyway, I was 12 weeks pregnant when I passed my test! But we managed to pootle about with no incidents!

In terms of recovery I feel nearly 100% normal and have for about a week or so. No bleeding at all, and as far as I'm aware all my stitches have healed just fine. Lost all my baby weight too, I weighed myself 7 days pp and I was up a whole 2lb! I reckon that's probably gone too now. I have definitely enjoyed being able to go clothes shopping again! I didn't realise how limited I was at the end...

Now for some photos from the past week or so. I feel like he has changed so much already!

So Theo is now 4 weeks old! Went to get him weighed today and he has put on 2lb 10oz since he was born!! He is a whopping 9lb 9! Little chunk loves his milk ha :)

Bumped into another mummy friend in the clinic, her son is 3 weeks older than Theo and it was so nice to spend some time with someone else who is basically at the same stage as me. It has been really lonely the past week, more than I've admitted tbh, I guess cos there wasn't much I could do about it. But we have agreed to meet up at the weekend when our OHs are working, and also try the mum and baby group at the clinic. Felt a lot more positive after that.

It did kinda feel like maternity leave was going to stretch and drag out in front of me. I know the past 4 weeks have gone ridiculously quick, but they would getting used to a new baby with lots going on. But things are calming down and becoming more routine, and I wasn't sure how much more daytime TV I could cope with. I don't want to go back to my job, but it's amazing how much working was a part of my identity. I was really good at my job, even if it was shit towards the end! But I have plenty of time work that out I guess and adjust to actually being a mum (it feels weird even saying it!).

Eek I haven't been around for ages. It's weird, I was on this forum every day while I was pregnant!

Theo is now 10 weeks old!! I really don't know how it's gone so fast. He's turning into such a cheeky little person and he sleeps so well.

Looking at the earlier pictures that I posted he has changed so much already. I think we've settled down and got used to each other now. We went away for the weekend 2 weeks ago and he was really good. I feel quite confident as a mum.

I've been considering starting a masters next September, but I'm still really uncertain about what's going to happen when my maternity leave ends. I wish I knew the answer, I hate not having a plan!

Anyway, here are some more recent pics :)

Theo is now over 15 weeks old. I just don't understand where the time has gone! He's changed so much and he's over 13lb now! He's still little on the centiles, but he looks perfect to me :)

We're muddling along, getting out and about doing things. I know my mat leave is going to pass so quickly and I just don't want to waste any of it.

Look how much he's grown!

awww he is SOOOO cute.

How has time went so quickly charli

Your boy is so super cute and still looks tiny. I’m so glad you feel so settled and confident as a mummy, enjoy every second with him! When are you due to go back to work? Xx

Aww yeah he is still little really, he's stayed on the 30th centile where he was born!

May, but I don't know if I am going back yet. Or if I'm gonna do my masters in September. Haven't decided!

He's definitely a cheeky little man now, and rocks a Christmas outfit!

Theo is 7.5 months now, he's been sitting by himself since 6 months and is trying to work out how to crawl! It's crazy how much he's changed just this year, let alone since he was born. He's a lovely little baby, happy most of the time and has the cutest giggles.

I only have about 5 weeks of mat pay left now. 9 months of pay seemed like loads, but now it's nearly finished. I don't know what's going to happen with work, I might get made redundant again which is fun. I've been as broody as hell the past week, even dreaming that I'm pregnant, which is annoying cos my head definitely does not want another baby right now!

Anyway time for some pics. The first one is of Theo today in his new coat!

I don't know really. I kinda don't want to go back to work, but I'm not sure I wanna just be at home all the time either. I might go back to uni next year and have the best of both worlds :p

Ah I couldn't have that small a gap I'm just not cut out for it haha, but you're right they'll be the best of friends. Are you excited? It's a boy isn't it? x

Oh cool, i was planning to do an adult course when these are in nursery. Go for it!!
Oh god, nither am i aha. Will just have to cope i suppose. Everytime scarlett has a screaming fit or wont sleep i just imagine 2 of it. Lmao. Yeah having a boy this time, i was like well what do you do with a boy when i found out xD but eveeyone has told me boys are more clingy.. Scarlett gets jealous when hubby gives me a cuddle so gonna be hard at the start, then when hes her age.
