Baby Led Weaning

Katt in case you haven't checked your email lately I've sent you an email hope you may find it useful?

Daggers I just checked out the email that's great thanks so much, some of those recipes look great

Onions - well all that I have read about BLW says that as you start from 6 months anything goes really though you may want to avoid commen allergy things. I haven't avoided anything apart from dairy/soy/nuts and that because after all the studying of my diet I've done since BF Leorah I am pretty confident she is ok with everything else.

I am sure the BF is effecting your hormones! I know it has an effect on me. Perhaps now you are reducing your feeds your cycle is getting back on track and your periods will start, that would explain the PMT type symptons. My brain just doesn't work anymore, people find it amusing that I am such a scatterbrain but I am seriously worried, I cannot hold a thought in my head, sometimes I really have to try and work out what day of the week it is. I blame the breastfeeding but I do worry that I'll be like this forever. I have never been the most organised person hence being called skatty!

Are you just feeding solids in this time or have you introduced formula? as of tonight I am dropping Leorah's late afternoon cluster feed, she always just sicks it up and it's so depressing so I am just pumping an oz extra for her bedtime feed now and hope she'll still sleep through.

I do hope you feel better soon. Those damn hormones are a killer aren't they? I haven't been getting periods but I have certainly been getting the PMT. I do feel sorry for Martin sometimes because I can lose my temper over nothing

Thanks again for the email, I'll try some out and let you know how I got on :D

I have been doing the same with Arianna and she is taking so many tastes this way.

She gets so excited at the sight of a rice cake!

Have you tried the dried mango.... Arianna LOVES it!

Hi Sarah, I haven't tried dried mango yet but she does have dried apricots and plums. She loved fresh mango so I'll have to try the dried stuff.

Isn't it funny with the ricecakes, Leorah loves them!

Do you have any other good food tips?

I made Leorah some really garlicky pasta today and she was licking the sauce off and was then dipping it in more sauce, she couldn't get enough! It's such a pleaure to watch them enjoy their food so much isn't it?

I havent tried garlic, was always scared of the nappies it would produce!! :puke: :rotfl:

Tonight she had a tortilla wrap with some chicken in a white sauce in it.... she loved it!!
She loves bread of any style! Bit like me!!

She loves her food, only thing I have found she doesnt like is banana - which I know is strange... usually the first thing babys like!
I give her bread sticks and a cheese sauce sometimes which she dips.
Also some melon pieces with some pureed strawberries to dip. erm... can think of any more favs.
Oh, she loves cucumber... which is also fab when they are teething if it's really cold!!

wow this thread is getting me really excited about all the things I can try with Logan!

I am amazed to hear that your babies love Garlic which is excellent as both me and hubby love it too!

its just a shame we have to wait until he is 6 months old!! lol I am going to print off this thread to keep for when its time!

I'm gonna have a think tonight of what all I have gave Arianna and let you know tomorrow... it's so hard to think of them all off the top of your head.
Be great to share ideas with everyone!!

liking the pics Sarah!!! What a mess, but hey what else can you really expect. I bought some 'baby' pasta the other day so will do some spag bol tomorrow - do y'all just mush up some tomatos for the sauce (with some garlic and onions)??

Katt between 11:30pm to 7am Otis now doesn't need (or should need) any food, he gets dinner at 5pm and then is BF at 6:30ish and then a DF at 11:30ish pm, I'm now discovering that this holds him until 7am the next day. However Otis was (is) still waking at around 3am and normally I'd just put him on the boob but I've decided to just give him his dummy and that seems to settle him so he's obviously not hungry or else he'd keep om crying. So fingers crossed that over the next few days he'll stop waking all together  !

Well as promised here are a few pic of Oats eat his dinner (roasted sweet potato, chicken and brocolli fritters and boiled brocolli - I made a massive plate and he only had a couple of bites, think I'm being a bit over ambishous?!

hmmm mi want food!...

Decisions, decisions, sweet potato or fritter????

Wow those pics of Arianna and Otis are both gorgeous, it's so nice seeing babies enjoy their food :D

Sarah, Leorah's nappy was definitely a green tinged spinach colour this morning but smelt like a BM nappy still! She still laways sicks up after a milk feed though and last night that stank of garlic

I do envy you mums that can give milk products, it must make life so much easier. I keep saying I am going to try a few spoons of yoghurt and see if Leorah still reacts through my BM but I'm too scared!! I'd feelmuch happier if she could eat a small amount as it's hard trying to think of calcium rich food that's not dairy hence all the spinach!

Daggers I tried to drop Leorah's late evening cluster feed last night but she got really upset. We were thinking it may be a bit of a ritual for her as the handover from mum to dad at night but then she started crying for a feed before bed after a 8oz bottle  She then slept until 6am but when I went to get her instead of a cuddle and nappy change as usual she wanted to get straight on the boob!! Looks like my suddenly very textbook babe is getting her 6 month growth spurt just ahead of her 6 month birthday tomorrow  At least she slept through :D It sounds like Otis's sleep habits are geting much better

Lyndsey this style of weaning is fabulous and it's not a new idea at all. This is what would have happened before the days of blenders etc. There is starting to be a lot of info about baby lead weaning out there and I am sure that in years to come it will become the way most people will wean their babies again. As you can see from my ticker Leorah has been ready for the past 2 weeks, 6 months is just the guideline and as it suggests baby lets you know when they are ready.

I have made a monster! Leorah will not let me assist her in any way. Today she was holding a toast soldier and it was sticking out the wrong way so I took it off her to help her hold it right. She went CRAZY  She threw the toast off the table and reached for a new bit sreaming her head off and giving me evils!! That's me told, i will leave the little diva to it in future :shakehead:

Shall I ask Minxy to change the title of this thread to the BLW thread and ask for it to be a sticky??? There seems to be quite a few of us and others are planning to wean this way when the time comes :D

Yeah I think this would be a good sticky!!

Aw girls your bubs look gorgeous eating their food. I was really nervous about starting to wean my LO but am looking forward to it now. Thank you Skatty for sharing your experiences and putting the pics up.

Xxx

your wish is my command :)

Thanks Minxy :D

AngelFairy I was also dreading it but read on this forum about BLW whilst still pregnant and planned on doing it since. It's fab and really suits us asI want Leorah to grow up loving interesting foods that we eat and also because she is already so independant. Again Leorah just had a huge tantrum because my DH tried to help her pick up a slippery piece of pear, she wants to do it all herself so I am glad we are not having battle of the spoons

WAYHAY!!! i just tried madison on a rice cake and she loved it!!!! she ate half with no fuss!!!

i will post pics later

That's great Hev! Perhaps she is just another little independant madam! Rice cakes are the best, you can put all sorts of things on them including any purees you may have in your freezer :)

Well today we had Oat pancakes with strawberries and banana for breakfast, however Otis is a bit lazy when it comes to feeding himself  , so I had to put some on a spoon with some strawberry and banana smoothie (which he loves!!!), he ate no problem from the spoon and eventually started trying to feed himself but as soon as he let the pancake touch his lips he would chuck it as if it were a dirty old sock  !!!!
Same thing happend at dinner - he had pasta with a lamb and tomato sauce, he enjoyed it but didn't take to the picking it up!!! Maybe it's cause the pancakes were a bit floppy and the pasta was a bit small??? Still he did eat his fruit and rice cake by himself :cheer: .
I definately recommend Oat pancakes - really easy to make & they taste great, Katt it's one of the reciepes I sent you yesterday, it does require milk but where ever I can I do use EBM (so were this reciepe required 1 and a 1/4 cup milk I used a 1/4 cup EBM and the rest was cows milk, but I presume that if you wanted you could use EBM?
It's god to see that the interest in BLWing is picking , it sure is fun and I think more liberating for both baby and mummy, especially seeing your LO eating the sort of foods you yourself do.

BLW is going great with Thea too :)

She has had carrots, apple, crabsticks (not on purpose she stole one from my plate and loved it lol) pineapple, kiwi and rice cakes.
She has fed herself baby porridge from a spoon for the last few nights before her bath and bed and is no longer waking for that
4am feed that had just appeared recently.

and kiwi in the safe feeder because i was abit worried about pips.

She is drinking baby juice once a day from a sippy cup and a little bit of water with food (she's not a water fan).
I have to admit I'm a bit confused as to how breastfeeding fits with weaning in general. I'm still feeding Thea just as I normally would, is this right? I dont want to reduce her boobie feeds yet as she is still quite a skinny mini! Do breastfed babies eventually just reduce the number of feeds themselves over the coming months? I dont want Thea to drink formula milk at all so i want to keep feeding her until she is at least a year but I'm assuming that i will have to pump regularly to keep up my supply if she isnt a interested in milk anymore.

LOL did any of that make sense!

Melaine from whati I understand is that once you start weaning baba they'll naturally start to reduce their milk feeds, but I guess you should let them dicate when. At the mo Otis has about 5 feeds a day (from 7am - 11:30pm) which I believe is normal for their age. Also he tends to only feed before having his naps, except at 7am when he wakes up. I know what you mean about Thea being small and not wanting her to miss out on any feeds as Otis is a skinny mini as well (think most BF babies tend to be), I'm having Otis weighed today hoping he is at least 16lbs 6oz or so and he's heading towards 7 months now!! Can't believe Lucybee had her baba wieghed yesterday and he's already 16lbs and he's only 2 and a half months  !!!!
I did have a quick nose at your other post re your moms comments on Theas weight, personally I won't worry as I'm sure that the HV's would not recommend you put Thea on formula, if Thea was under weight I would have thought may get you to start weaning Thea a bit more, but I'm sure it won't come to that anyway as she is a very healthy and happy baby!!!! She definately is not under weight!

Hi everyone :D

Daggers I did make porridge panckes before but found them as messy as thick porridge so never bothered again but really like the idea of adding the fruit!

Melanie, I am giving Leorah her regular BFs. Even though they seem to be eating a lot when they first start feeding themselves not a lot actually goes in so milk is still their main source of nutrition. I doubt if Thea will drop any feeds soon. Leorah had a massive breakfast of a slice of toast, strawberries, ½ a rice cake, a bit of banana and two dried plums and still asked for a BF as soon as she was done today though I am sure she's having a growth spurt as she keeps asking for feeds around every 2½ hours whereas she normally goes 4. Maybe the baby porridge is filling and that may cause her to drop a feed but I don't know about that :?

I have to say the great thing about being in Denmark is babies only get weighed every few months and it isn't such an issue but saying that the babies here are HUGE

Anyway good luck everyone with the BLW. We have friends coming for lunch and Leorah will be eating at the table with us :D
