Hi all!

Got my bfp on Tuesday and a few more since, have appointment with the GP next Tuesday.

I am considering paying (£89)for an early scan to shed more light on exactly how far gone I am as I am a bit confused.

My last AF was 24th April. Around the time my next period was due (28th May) my Mum passed away. I obviously missed my period, however after testing at one week late then two weeks, i kept getting bfns! I actually only got my bfp when I was 3 weeks and a day late! I understand it can take time for the hcg to show in some women.

Someone suggested I may have skipped a period due to the stress of my Mums death, then ovulated again and caught the egg, therefore only being 3/4 weeks instead of 7/8? Also I did a clearblue digi, expecting it to say 3weeks plus but it said 2-3. Really confused and would just want to know what stage the little bean is at!

I dont really have many symptoms apart from fatigue and some food aversions and hightened smell. No morning sickness at all. Howvwr I have noticed my tummy is slightly more rounded (especially at night!) but ive actually been eating less so it cant be weight gain for that reason.

I know im just being impatient lol and should see what the GP says first.

Does an early scan detect possible due date and would it shed any light on how far along I am? Anyone have any experience or advice? Thank you xx

Yes an early scan will give you a date and tell you how far you are.

Where about are you? Private scans in my area are only £45 so I've already been for one at 6 weeks and it was very reassuring, would definitely recommend xx

You could try contacting the early pregnancy unit in the hospital and see if they'll give you an early scan to make sure all is ok? Otherwise, I'd say for piece of mind, paying for it would be worth it!

Yep they'll be able to give you and estimated age of the baby based on its measurements. Definitely worth the reassurance for you though that does seem expensive. Have you had a look on groupon for vouchers? If not you can't put a price on the relief! It's unlikely the epu will help in this situation.

So sorry to hear about your mum. How absolutely awful for you.

I am sure the stress could indeed have 'messed around with things' a bit.

My LMP was 29th April and I'm close to 8 weeks.

I don't know when to suggest getting the scan though? Going by LMP you should be far enough along for a scan to show but given all the other info (not getting a BFP for quite some time etc...) you could well be less pregnant than you think?

I'd maybe speak to GP and see if they can take some bloods. Have to agree that EPU don't tend to want to get involved in these kind of situations (mine is a strictly 'bleeding and or severe cramping only' as it is so oversubscribed)

£89 is the cost for me as as well (I'm in London).

I hope all goes well for you and sorry once again about your mum.

Thanks everyone, a lot to consider! I am in Northern Ireland about an hour from Belfast. There are several other clinics that do early scans but no prices on their website, so I will ring on Monday and price around. One other place charges £200!

Unless I am one of the rare people who get a late BFP then I wouldnt have a clue far on I am as if I missed a period due to stress then I have no LMP to go by!

It would just be nice to have some reassurance as well as have a good idea what stage the little one is at so I can get in tune with my body. Its just everyone here pretty much knows exactly how far gone they are and I feel clueless and doubtful!
If I go by my gut instinct I reckon I am about 7/8 weeks and maybe didnt pay much attention to the bfns or squint enough? Also they were cheapies. Part of me maybe wants to be that stage, less time to wait until 12 week scan lol.

DH understands why I want it but thinks I should hold out to see what the GP says. I go on holiday on Wednesday for a week so would have to wait until I come back anyway.

I will ring around on Monday and get prices and ask some questions, then speak to my GP on Tuesday morning and make the decision from there.

Its definitely been a rollercoaster of a month emotionally for sure. I wish my Mum was here so I could tell her the news :-(.

Thanks everyone xxx

Oh bless you xxxx how hard without your mum, lovely xxx

So sorry to hear about your mum. Congrats on your bfp, but understand it's a bittersweet time for you. As you don't have an idea of dates I would ask your GP to refer you to EPU for an early scan to confirm. As they have no dates to go on it would be hard to make sure you are seen at the right times for testing etc. My friend was referred for an immediate scan when she didn't know her dates so they could work out how far along she was. Exactly this.

Sorry to read about your mum must be such a bittersweet time for you atm.

I'd approach GP first and perhaps ask for a blood test a week apart make sure the HCG is raising and you'll be able to get a rough estimate.

If a digital is saying 2-3 I'd lean to say around 5wish. I got my 3+ when I was 5+5.

Epu tend to be reserved for people with urgent pregnancy issues bleeding and bad cramping but depending on area if it's not over stretched they may see you. I know my cousin waited a few weeks because it was less urgent so if you are referred on to epu you could get bloods done whilst you wait.

(Or pay for the scan) however given that atm it's pointing to earlier I'd not fancy paying that much to be 5w along. I got good view with my early scans at 8w.

Good luck xxx

Thank you everyone! I will explain everything to the GP and if I get get a scan with EPU, then all well and good. If not, i'll then consider paying private. If I am unsure about the dates then the GP and/or midwife wont, so maybe they will have to investigate more instead of sending me on a 12 week scan if I would only be like 8 weeks?
Thanks for advice I really appreciate it xxx

Hi loveandpeace, so sorry to hear about your mum.

A very similar thing happened to me this pregnancy in that my last AF was 20th April then I missed my 20th May period, but had 4 negative pregnancy tests. I did another test about 2/3 weeks ago which was then positive.

According to my last period I should be about 9 weeks 2 but I had a private scan yesterday as I too was worried, and it only showed a tiny 7+6 / 8 week baby. She said sometimes it can take a while for the sperm to actually find the egg. Who knows though. But if you can afford a private scan (they're only £45 here) then I'd definitely recommend it for peace of mind and to get more of an idea with dates.

Good luck let us know how you get on xx

Thank you! Its good to hear from someone with similar experience. I may have ovulated later or implantation took a little longer.

The cheapest I have found online is £89 but I have a few places to price tomorrow that dont have prices on their website. After seeing the GP on Tuesday I will go from there. I head on holiday on Wednesday for a week so I have no choice but to wait another while either way! I dont mind about the cost but its good to know they can tell you roughly how far gone you are. Thats all I want to know really. I know I will have to wait until the 12 week scan to be 'out of the woods' so to speak.
Xx

Hi there, Yes i would pay for a private early scan just for reassurance if anything.

It is interesting what you said about your tummy feeling slightly more rounded as in my last pregnancy i noticed my tummy felt slightly rounded about 8 weeks into the pregnancy so you could be further along

Also the clear blue date thing wasn't very accurate for me in my last pregnancy & i know a lot of people who said it wasn't for them either.
