Hi all,

I am new here and looking for a little advice and am hoping you might be able to help me.

My boyfriend had a vasectomy before we met, we got it reversed but it was unsuccessful. We have decided to try to get pregnant with a sperm donor, I am going to be 38 this year so can hear my biological clock ticking loudly as I am sure you can imagine so I am keen to get going as quickly as possible. The only problem is having saved the money for the vasectomy reversal we are back to square one in terms of savings.

Having spoken to the Bristol fertility clinic it is looking like it will cost £3,000 per try (including the cost of the sperm) and I wondered if anyone knew if this price is pretty standard or is it worth me ringing around other clinics in the UK?

Any help or advice you can give me will be very gratefully received.

Thanks :-)

Hi! I think it's worth looking around at different clinics to make sure you're happy with where you receive the treatment anyway, particularly if you are private as it's obviously not cheap. I can't quite recall what my previous clinic charged but I think it was likely around £2,500-£3k as well and ivf was a fair bit more if I remember rightly. Definitely look around anyway I would say, you never know as you may find it cheaper but still may prefer the clinic you are at.

Hi MissJuly, thanks for getting back to me.

You are right, I should look around anyway. I do like the idea of doing it closer to home though. I know my dreams of finding somewhere cheaper are just dreams! I reckon I will have the money saved by September which isn’t too bad.

Where did you go? Would you recommend the clinic?

Oh sorry, I wasn't private, we were on nhs funding but every so often we would get prescription lists for the pharmacy and could see what the costs of treatments were which is how I know. My clinic has since closed down unfortunately but I would have recommended them had they remained open. What area are you in?

I had an unmedicated IUI at the Lister in London and it cost 950. Obviously if it had been medicated there would have been additional costs and that was with own sperm, not donor. 3,000 sounds quite high to me but I could just be underestimating the cost of medication and donor sperm. Just to put the cost in perspective though, my clinic in Greece charges 3,000 Euro for full own egg/own sperm IVF, not including medication.

I would advise to check out other clinics, and even IVF clinics abroad.

We’ve just looked at IUI and the cost was 1400, that was in Oxford. Hope that helps.
