Downs Syndrome Support Thread

I'm just getting over that big, Aaron and hubby have it at the moment ... It absolutely floored me!

Other than that we are doing ok, having some feeding issues and weight gain issues but apart from that he's doing really well... He's finding his voice and has been cooing at me for 2 days

Can't see tickers because I'm on my phone!

This is a lovely thread. My cousin in Muscat has ds and was told by numerous docs that she wouldn't live past 5. Here she is at 31 holding my leandro who adored her when she came down for my wedding and she will always be his aunty Nicole no matter what. Shame she lives the other side of the world :-( xxx

Btw he just started crawling when they were here so didn't wanna sit still lol xx

I dont have a downs syndrome baby myself, but just wanted to say that you all have such beautiful little ones!. They are lovely people when they get older and very affectionate, ive met a few myself and they are such amazing people :D

All you ladies should be proud of yourselves :D x

Not knowing much as my LO is only 12 weeks but another mum i know goes mad when people say 'they are lovely' lol no idea why, I think stubborn is a word commonly used, I guess we've yet to find out :D
The right and wrong things to say. may never be known
Even I still say DS baby but apparently that's wrong, it should be a baby with DS
So confusing lol

yes , during my special needs training we were taught saying "downs syndrome person/child" as apposed to baby or person with downs syndrome is like saying the condition defines the child as opposed to a person with the condition iykwim? We were also taught that gereralising someone by saying "they are lovely" is stereotyping them based on thier condition . Not having a go or trying to de-rail this lovely thread by the way just passing along what I learned .

But, to be fair, my son will always be lovely, even if he does scribble black marker pen over the walls (scenario)

I prefer a baby with DS tater than a DS baby.

I also am not collectively stating that DS kids are lovely ... As its putting him in a stereotype.

He is first and foremost a baby and DS is a very small part of who he is

Tweety and hopeful, what therapy/jobs have you been given for your babies? I had one hospital appt with physio but it was just intro, she didn't give us ideas on what to do with him to help

I noticed you'd posted about being given actioned signing which I do with Charlie anyway but can't help think I'm missing out on other stuff, is there anything you can post up in here?

I do a little sensory too, playing with lights, brushing things over him etc too

Thanks, hoping I get another appt with physio soon but thought it would have come by now

So I saw the development team for the first time this week.

Aaron saw a physio and a speech therapist. I'll try to summarise the advice I was given

Speech Therapist

1. No dummies, it encourages them to stick their tongue out
2. No solid finger foods before 7 months
3. When starting to wean, use a drippy cup rather than a sippy cup (i.e. it should not be anti-spill), it will work his facial muscles better
4. Talk to him lots, make sure his head is front and centre when talking and no background noise ...e.g tv
5. Start baby signing classes asap

Physiotherapist

1. Lots of tummy time.
2. Encourage to lie on side
3. Roll him from tummy to back, and back again
4. When on his back, make sure his head is front and centre
5. Bring hands together to meet in the middle of his body
6. Bring feet together in the middle of his body, play with his feet and let him see his feet
7. Baby sensory / baby massage classes

Fresh ... This is what I was given to do with Aaron xx
