Would be interesting to know what you think

 I do.

Seems kind of silly to give away money that we need!

Yes and No
Its all revelative to your own situation. At the moment I am b1tching about rising food and fuel prices but I only have to look at certain areas in my own country to see people a lot worse off than me. Look further a field than that to the 3rd world and you will find provety on a whole new level.

But I guess some could argue there are people in better situations than I am. I suppose it's from which angle you choose see it.
When OH and I were both working we used to donate about £40 a month to various charity's. Now I only do one, the NSPCC. It's £2 a month, which being honest I can easily afford.
Like Midna said though, if I do see something I see as a worthy cause and I can afford it! I will donate. But again I also wouldn't donate to causes I don't support such as organised religion. So no church roof for me either!

I have put no as I don't think charity is just about donating money, but is about thinking about others. I know times are hard but it saddens me that our society is turning into "I'm alright Jack" train of thought. I have been thinking about this more as Seren is getting older and I want her to grow up thinking about others. So even if its just helping out an elderly neighbour, doing some volunteer work or giving charity shops some old clothes its all helping others. Just something daft as smiling at someone and saying good morning to them can make someone's day better. I give money to our local hospice as they have helped us loads in the past but we have decided that when our children are older we will all sit down and choose a charity for a year to support and help. I am a massive believer in karma, and my nan who was a wise one always used to say to me "you never repay a good turn, you pass it on to someone else".

*goes off humming "I'd like to teach the world to sing"*

I put yes but if we were in a better position financially I would always donate money. As it is I can hardly afford to feed my own kids at the minute and I know its nothing compared to the 3rd world but I just can not spare any money. I will donate the odd bit of money to our local cancer hospice as my nan and dad have both spent time there in the last couple of years but thats about it.

I put no, because I agree with Beanie. It's not just about money. Of course the family takes priority but I'm always up for helping others where I can.....even if it's only to help other struggling mums like me who need a babysitter from time to time......

Thats not what it means

It means helping charities in this country first instead of other countries first!

I didnt mean it in the sense of family and friends.

ah - i took it as putting yourself first, which is kind of what you meant but internationally.

my answer is still no. whilst it baffles me why we as a developed, well off country still have people living on the streets etc i also think there are others that need our help in other countries.

Well, the expression 'charity begins at home' is an idiom, and it means to put your family and friends before others.

"This idiom means that family members are more important than anyone else, and should be the focus of a person's efforts. " UsingEnglish.com

I didn't realise you actually meant JUST donating money to charities.......sorry!

lol i didnt kno u were tlking bout charities, and no i dont think so. who needs it most, needs it most

I put I'm not sure. When it comes to Charities it depends on what gets my attention and obviously what I can afford. For example, about a year ago I was visiting my Dad in Swansea and I was approached whilst out shopping by a girl who was looking for people to donate monthly to a charity supporting people with bi-polar disorder, manic depression etc and I signed up for it because my brother suffers with these and has found alot of support from these types of charities, so I wanted to give something back.
But in regards to third world charities such as Oxfam, I donate what I can in boxes and things but I wouldn't sign up to a monthy direct debit because I couldn't afford to support more than one charity and I'd prefer to support one that is a little more close to my heart.
I think it's a case some things are more important to some people than others.

It depends on whether you look at 'home' as geography or where the heart is.

I agree with Poppy, some things are closer than others. Having a kidney condition, I often donate to kidney charities treating people all over the world, maybe in lieu of giving to a heart charity in Bradford (terrible analogy but am at work and not on form :D )

We can't all give to everyone, but we make our choices based on a lot of things.

SS is accurate about the meaning of the phrase, but if I take it to mean the OP was asking whether we should stick to giving money within this country then no, that's not me. I guess I give by reason and personal availability, not postcode or passport!
