Council Rent Increase

I don't think offence is meant to anyone by anyone and I don't think Lou's comment was meant to sound as harsh as it did.

However, Yes I do agree that it's hard to pay bills at the moment be it you live in a council house, privately rented house or owned property.

I don't think anyone is ever better off. We struggle enormously on the wages that we have as Oxford is an extremely expensive place to live too.
Just out of interest Geordie Lass when you say your comment was made to those on a ridiculous high wage, how much do you class that to be?
I'm sorry but myself and my DH were talking the other night that we think that we would be better off in a council house, claiming income support & getting council tax allowance than in the situation which we are in by working our ar**s off

Exactly, me and OH could have gone on the council list and got a place for alot less rent than we are paying a month now on our mortgage but we wanted to pay our own way so worked hard for our own place and pay our own way.

I don't know enough about it really to comment, I just thought it was dirt cheap to be on the council. I live near one of the biggest council estates in England and it is a mixture of privately owned and council owned property. When you then consider you could be paying a shed load of money each month on a mortgage just to live next door to someone who is getting their roof over their head for a hell of alot less makes being on the council a cheap ride and to be perfectly honest a tad unfair. But I suppose its swings and roundabouts.

Most private houses in council estates have been brought from the council at very discounted rates. Hench there been a housing shortage in this country. To low income families the council rent isnt dirt cheap and £10 a week can be the difference between getting by or not. Im sure alot of people in council housing would much rather own their own homes but its not possible for some.

And theres alot of people who think the world owes them a living

Wow that is a really unfair comment Lou We live in a country with a welfare system to help people who cant afford to but their own homes. Yes there are people who take the p*ss and expect something foe nothing but there are more people who work hard to do the best for their families. Not every council tenant is a lazy sponger

We lived in a council flat for 3 years until 18 months ago (we were both working). I don't remember our rent increasing more than a couple quid a year
An increase of £10 can make a huge difference if you're low waged and only just making ends meet to start with.
I'd always heard that housing associations were notorious for being more expensive rent wise than the council.

but i am not one of them i work 5 days a week i claim NO benifits and i live at my partners Dads place because we cant even afford the rents around hear

im not one of theose people who expect it handed to me on a plate
so i do not need to think about my reaction to your comments

I pay my taxs and national insurance too

I am more angry with the state of housing and the cost of it not reflecting normal average peoples wages

the affordable housing is not actually affordable
the house prices are well out of the range of most.
and even renting leaves you sort
thats my rant why cant there be actual affordable housing for those on a low wage????????
I love my Job and yes i chose it i and dedicated chid carer and yes you could say i have no right to moan about not being able to afford housing as i chose my line of work
and yes you could be right
but why cant i do a job i love and still be able to afford a roof over my head

and you could say wel go get a job in london working in IT to earn more money
but if we all did that who would be left to do those lowley paid but vitaly important jobs?
If im idealistic then so be it

and yes you can say stop moaning if prices are to high where you live move somewhere where there cheaper

well the places we could afford rent or buy in kent are drug filled crime riddled hell holes
i am not going to subject my child to that sort of danger

I have to agree. Im not saying that anyone on here thinks the world owes them a living but having experienced that area, there are a lot of people that walk in and speak to us like we should be bending over backwards to pay their rent and want to do nothing in return. Im talking about really lazy people, not joe Bloggs who is having a hard time and doing his best. If people were doing their best I would bend over backwards to help them but the lazy ones, they dont care.

Right I've really kept my patience with this but thats it, quote me please where I said you were anything. I said "theres alot of people who think the world owes them a living". I never said you were a lay about, a dole cheat, a moaner, a loser, I never said sod all about you. You said you agree with me on one point, I only made one point.

I have to agree with Lou, there are a lot of people who thinks the world owes them and not sure why people have taken offence to that comment if they are not one of those people.

We all work hard, i'm not on an amazing wage, I privately rent I couldnt' get a council house if I wanted cos the majority in my area are given to people too lazy to get off their arses some of my friends included. They think it's much easier to get the house/benefits than go to work and earn a living and it gets my goat.
