14 year old girl killed by dogs!

My DD had a dogs trust training session in school yesterday. She got a certificate to say she knows how to care for a dog properly and stuff xx

Wow that is really good.
Catch them young, that's the key xxx

I agree it is definitely down to owners as well as breeding and lack of knowledge. How awful for that poor girl! How terrified she must have been. I have owned a staffy as well as mixed breed dogs, all rescue dogs (when I was growing up that is) and the only dogs that scare the crap out of me are collies. I hate them. Really have a deep fear of them. I do think it's too easy to go out and just buy a dog. No questions asked. Perhaps that has to be looked at and changed before we decide to cull certain breeds.

I really don't know what the answer is, maybe stricter controls over breeding and selling animals, but then it needs to be properly enforced, which is never going to happen.

If you look on the rehoming sites, more than half the dogs are bull terriers, staffies etc.

We even has trouble trying to get a dog from rspca which yea they have to be careful but I think they have wrong rules in some ways x

I agree. But then like everything that the government tries to control, it will just go underground and that would be awful for the poor pups :(
I had no fear of any dogs as a child but I think as I've gotten older and had kids I worry more. I definitely get nervous when we walk past certain dogs on the streets.
Another thing that annoys me (while I'm on my soap box) is dogs off lead!
We love to go to the beach or go to Delamere forest with the kids and the dog. Now my dog will walk by my side without a lead. She will not run away or deviate from my side but I always have her on a lead in public places. (I always pick up her poo too which is another annoyance!).
Now last time we went to the forest a giant dog came bounding over. I scooped up my dog and put her into my coat. This dog seemed friendly and I think just wanted to say hello. I ushered the kids away and we tried to walk off. Still no owner. This dog was still bouncing around us, again, friendly enough but who knows. Then this lady appears. She comes running, out of breath. "Oh he's ok, just wants to play".
Now this really really annoyed me! Some people may not want your massive dog jumping all over them and should there be trouble you were nowhere to be seen!!!!
Rant over xx

Yes!! I'm friends with the RSPCA page on FB and they post animals that need homes and it's staffy, staffy and another staffy! Whenever they post a different breed loads comment wanting to give them a home but the staffs seem to be overlooked x

We work with the RSPCA and they transfer their animals to us sometimes for rehoming. They are more strict with rehoming as their animals are mostly cruelty cases.

If you think the RSPCA has alot of staffies, its even worse at Battersea. Kennel after kennel of them. I walked through a full kennel block and it was wall to wall staffies. Such a shame.

OMG don't even get me started on dog fouling and dog walking etiquette, we'll be here all day!!! There would be no ladder high enough to get me down off that soapbox!! Lol!!

Hahaha I'm with ya hun, it irritates the shit out of me! And the people get quite shirty when you pull them up on it, like amazement all over their faces "what? My dog should be on a lead??? Are you serious???" Erm yes!!!! xx

I just think with rspca we tried ti get a dog because therw are sp many there that need loving homes but we couldn't re home one becausey girl dog hadn't been done even tho she cant have babies and we wanted a female anyway? X

I do let my dogs off lead when we're out walking if its safe, but I keep them in sight, put them on the lead if the dog coming the other way is on the lead and just keep them under control. I wouldn't ever let them go and leap all over someone or another dog! But some people just let their dogs do whatever they want and have no control over them at all. An out of control dog is a dangerous dog imo.

Tbh I think they are far too strict with their rehoming policies and they do miss out on good homes because of it. They wouldn't let me have a dog now as i have an under five in the house and working with dogs is my profession! Lol!!

Yea and I have 2 kids too but I have a dog whos great with kids. Yea fair enough some dogs dont like kids but im sure theres dogs out there that are ok with kids x

Absoloutely. Onse size doesn't fit all when it comes to rehoming dogs!

Exactly so I could have helped a dog with a loving family and home but got rejected without even trying to explain xc

We get lots of people coming to us becasue they have been refused a dog by tge RSPCA. Its a shame they miss out on the homes but it dos mean we get ours into homs quicker so its not all bad.

I would love another dog. We did re home a dog but a hyper puppy and my lazy rottie just clashed completely! But I did a good thing as she came from a dirty horrible flat with 2 dogs chained outside! We have recently re homed her to a loving family with kids and another dog same breed! Been in contact with them and she's so happy! X

Aww shame it didn't work out but glad you found a nice home for her.

Thank u. Felt really bad but we did toilet train her.taught her sit and wait. She was a good dog but my older dog is to lazy for a puppy lol! We would need an older dog with same personality I think x

I know its stereotypical but it was that breed of dog that attacked again i think even if it had been poodles it would have still been all over the news because of her death, but i think its the mentality of the owners who do get that breed and dont care for them.
On facebook there is a selling site and all it is is staffies been bought and re sold all the time because people buy for the image but dont realise the work and cost involved. Maybe if you had to pay for a licence it would put people off? Or higher costs if your dog attacks someone due to you (i.e letting them off the lead to attack etc) I dont know i just wish people would stop abusing dogs and using them as a show piece.

I was bit by a German Shepard as a kid on my wrist it was my best friends dog and had never attacked, my mum knocked on the door to pick me up and it came out of the kitchen to the open door and attacked my mum and then me. My mum had stitches all around her stomach from it, completely unprovoked and out of character. It lived with two young children! The rspca didn't put him down although they would nowadays.
