14 year old girl killed by dogs!

Poor girl it's so devastating :( my heart goes out to her family.

But surely somebody would of heard the dogs

That poor girl ... Story's like this upset me so much as this can be prevented if the dogs would of been trained properly.

I may be shot down in flames here but this is my opinion.

I do believe that there are certain breeds of dog that no longer have a place in society because they have consistantly been bred to be hardwired to be aggressive. Pit Bulls for instance do not have normal reactions to stress and excitement that other breeds have, their limbic syatem totally ignores Flight or Freeze but goes straight to fight (reactive). The other banned breeds also show these traits. I attended a Biology of Agression Seminar with a very well respected american dog physcologist who used to try to rehabilitate Pits she no longer does as her sucess rate was low.

Her belief was that the breed had been selectively bred to be more and more reactive over the last 2/3 decades and the temperament of the original breed had been ruined.

I had a Pit in one of my training classes nearly 20 years ago, lovely dog but she broke my arm whilst playfully grabbing it! I've never forgotten how quick that happened and how painful that was.

Sadly I see this happening to the lovely Staffy breed. People breed them to make money or create a 'tough' dog with little regard to the dogs welfare, temperament or health or that of there future puppies and their puppies too.

I see alot of Staffs at shows who are just adorable, have the gorgeous happy temperament that is classic staff, then I see the status dogs who are clearly not well balanced - nature or nuture??? Or a mix of both?

My work covers the DDA and I cringe each time a dog is seized because some idiot has failed it, whether thats the owner or the person who brought that dog into the world without a care.

People need to take responsibility of the breeds they own. My beloved Malamutes (as already stated - a child in a buggy was bitten by one recently) are going through a hard time, people buy them because they want a wolf in the house...........these dogs generally do not make good 'pets', they need work to keep their huge brains in check. We race ours and spend hours in the forest traning them. Likewise our BC's do agility (just for fun these days) to keep them occupied. People do not understand the breed they have or are not committed to doing what is neccessary to keep these dogs managable.

As for what set this off?? I doubt the dogs ganged up and tried to steal the food, but what may have happened is that a couple of dogs may have had words and the others joined in and a mass scrap may have ensued with the poor girl caught up in it.

I have 8 dogs, unless you really know your dogs and understand canine body language, managing a group like that is difficult, let alone a child doing it. My LO is never alone with any of the dogs and never will be, I would never expect her to cope with that and likewise not expect my dogs to understand she is different.

It's horrific. Why the girl was left there alone heavens knows.

Scary stuff. My mum has a miniature yorkie and oh my goodness, he may look small and innocent but he is the nastiest most vicious little creature ever! He has bitten several people quite badly including my niece, he bit her face, very nearly had her nose off! It is more than a bone of contention between us and my mum as he is "the apple of her eye" but if that had of been my lads I can't tell u what I'd of done. My brothers soft, so although he was mad, he didnt really do anything. All this I think is my mums fault! "Duke" hates children, seems to be quite common with the little dogs, but he sits proudly high up on my mothers knee while the babies/kids crawl on the floor, clearly this dog thinks he is above everyone. He jumps up on the sofa whenever, doesnt wait to be asked and ignores you when told to get down, he is fed from the table, sleeps in my mums bed, no wonder he thinks he's above everyone! I do think how the dogs are raised has a lot to do with their temperment but i also I firmly believe no matter how well you know the dog, whatever the breed they shouldn't be left alone with any child for a minute cos any dog can turn. And I am a dog lover believe it or not, just desperately been put off Yorkies and I wholeheartedly blame my mum for that ha!

I do 100% agree with this, kinda what I was trying to say but you've put it better!

This is so sad. The poor girl must have been so scared. No-one will ever really know what happened. But how horriffic. I totally agree about it being the owners and not the dogs. So sad. My area is really bad for 'status' dogs... It was In the local paper the other week because a boy went out causing bother and his dog got put down because his dog went for people when he was fighting :(

My ex had a Staffy. And I can honestly say I have never met a dog like it. So well behaved. No-one could ever believe when they met him. He was like a person. He understood every word that was said. He is unbelievable. But yes he looked scary. And probably my ex did too... He had tattoos, worse jeans and stone island designer tops etc... But he was far from a hooligan. He had 2 business, drives flashy cars. So it just depends on individual circumstances xx

I totally agree! I have a rottie n shes amazing! Dont go on sofas unless invited. Goes on her bed when were eating! But most of my family won't come round my house because of her! Even tho they haven't met her. Really sad x

Whereas my chi is a little diva! She barks when the door knocks, she growls at the cat if he goes near her food, she is very strong willed! I have spoilt her rotten in a way because I carry her around a lot and she sleeps in my bed and I have treated her like a human baby (which she isn't, she's a dog!) x

Lol we waa the same when coco was a puppy! Slept in our bed etc. But when kids came along she had to be treated like a dog. And also in our house now we have cream carpet in bedroom and white sheets to she sleeps downstairs now! Lol x

I tried that but she cries and cries. She's also epileptic and a lot of her fits tend to happen at night so I like to keep an eye on her. She possibly doesn't need to sleep in my bed though xx

Lol it's so hard with a cute lil dog! And they sleep so peacefully. The first couple nights were hard for us. But now coco knows to not even go upstairs x

It all started because I go to bed earlier than my oh and sometimes he was working til midnight so me and the dog would go to bed. We'd have a snug while watching tv. Starts a habit then though doesn't it. I felt safe when oh wasn't home because I knew she'd bark if she heard any noise. She's very attached to her human now lol x

Aww bless! I loved cuddling my rottie but she got very large very quick lol x

My ex was really strick with Buddy and it totally paid off. He was always on a collar and lead but never needed it. He never pulled. Would sit at the edge of the road before crossing. Went to the door to wait for the toilet. Went to his own bed. He would wait at the door of the car to be opened for him and jump in. He is an amazing wee dog. I miss him so much. If I could have kept him I would have.xxx

Tia comes to bed with us every night. She gets under the cover and keeps my legs warm and then when hubby gets up for work she gets with her head in his pillow like so...
