Why do friends & family feel the need to be rude about the names you have chosen?
So far weve had OHs Mum tell us she 'hates' one of the names weve chosen for our little girl & wrinkled her nose up at the rest!
She said she hated Tabitha as it would get shortened to 'Tabby as in cat' her suggestion was 'Polly' instead! To which I responded 'As in a parrot?' (sorry if anyone is having/had Polly I just felt the need to point it out to her as she had pissed me off!
Our other 'Friends' also told us that Ruby sounded like a porn star!
We arent telling people now, grrrr.
Anyone else had such rudeness?x

Hey! Oh yep i see now! So you've had exactly the same! Soo uncalled for! I LOVE the name Ruby, but my friend at work has a Ruby so not ideal for me, but would have been top of my list!!

Sod em I say :) xx

We told no one our final name choice because whatever name we chose someone had something to say about it!! The only people who knew I was gonna name him charley was everyone on here!

Don't tell them I say!! I had a few nights with my family where the came up with weird and wonderful names, then OH's family did the same. Now fair enough we didn't decide until he was a couple of days old for sure but I don't think we even told people what our short list was. They wouldn't me making the same comments if you said this is your granddaughter Tabitha. Your choice, not theirs.
Sorry I'm ranting!

lol Lacey's Mummy, your answer was what I was trying to say!

Yes I agree with everyone else - this is why I don't really tell anyone, because if you say 'we're thinking of calling him.....' then people spout all sorts of opinions and rubbish, but if you just announce it as his name then they might think twice and at least try to be polite!! Families are the worst for sure!!! xx

I agree, keep it quiet, when I get pregnant again the only people who will know is me, o/h (I suppose lol) and you lovelies of course :)

People can be so thoughtless and rude!!! Dont tell em' xxx

Been there done that. Someone decided they didn't like Ezziemai as they thought it was pronounced Easy which it isn't. People need to think before they speak. xXx

Easy? How did they come up with that? Honestly?! Some people are just Doofuses & inconsiderate ones at that!!!x

PMSL I should hope not, my nan is called Ruby!!

People are quite ignorant when it comes to name choices, frigg um. Ur baby, ur choice!

I told one of my closest friends that Oscar was a contender for my son's name - she said 'oh noooo I hate, hate , hate the name Oscar! i know a few Oscars and they are all horrible and if you call him Oscar he'll turn out to be a horrible person' WTF!!! I know she was kind of joking and I laughed along with her, but I would never dream of saying that to someone, it's so rude!!! xxx

I really can sympathise. I gave birth to my little boy on Monday named him. Then comments and emotional blackmail from very very close family started causing me to cry everyday and ruin the name so that me and my hubby are now thinking of a new one. I feel so bad my gorgeous little boy has no name.

That's the reason we didn't decide on a name until I was in labour!
At the end of the day, it's your baby, not theirs, so stuff what they think and call her whatever you want! X

That's really awful!!

If you don't mind me asking what was the name you chose she found so offensive:mad:

Awww that's awful hun and your family should be ashamed of themselves!! Just go with the name that you love and that when you look at your son just feels right. You will never please everyone in your family, especially the older generations....I'm definitely not telling mine as I know they won't like it, but sod em!! xxx

Stick to the name u had hun... dont go changing it or upsetting urself xx

I think that before the birth, in a way it is better if people give honest opinions on names...

Either you agree with what they say or you don't but at least you can pick a name knowing the "worst".

If you can't take negative comments, don't tell people.

I told my family my names and they all disliked them so i thought "fine, can't use those then" but as time has gone on i have decided i like some names enough to use them anyway :)

After the birth though - people should keep their gobs shut!

What name was it Mrs_B? Definately don't change the name if you had already named him! People can be so thoughtless.

it was curtis. we are trialling some other names at the minute.
