Sofia vs Sophia

I prefer Sofia as a spelling - I really like names with Fs in them but pronunciation I would go with Sow-fia rather than S-fia.

It is a beautiful name though and I don't know any either :) xx

I love Sophia! I would go with that spelling too I think it looks nicer. I'm a primary teacher and we don't have any Sophia's in the school x

Its a beautiful name and was our choice if having a girl, spelt Sophia. Personally I think that Sofia sounds like a lazy way of spelling the name and Sophia sounds more sophisticated. Thats only my opinion. I really really love the name! Good choice :)

That's my name! I spell it Sophia the only thing I have found is that some people pronounce it sofier if that makes sense which I hate! It was really rare when I was born and don't hear much of it now as people always prenounce it wrong! Good name tho ;)

I know a Sophia and a Sofia and they pronounce their names differently.

Sophia is pronounced as in So- fee - a
Sofia is pronounced as in So - fi - a

If I were you i'd choose the sound of the one you prefer and go with that spelling as (and I know from experience) having a name that people constantly mispronounce is really irritating

I don't know any hon and it think it's a really pretty name.

I'd pronounce it So-fee-a, but I'd spell it Sophia - I think it looks nicer and more sophisticated :)

Xxxx

I work in a secondary school and know of one Sophia. However I prefer the spelling Sofia.
I did see something that said Sophia was the top baby girls name in the USA last year.

I know of 2 Sofia's and 1 Sophia. All 1yr old. I think both spellings are very pretty although Sofia reminds me of the Bulgarian city of the same name. Xx

I know one Sophia properly, my OHs niece, she's nearly 7. I also know of a girl I went to school with calling her daughter Sophia as well. Where I live it's mostly Isabelles, Isabellas and Graces...

I think it's a lovely name and personally I prefer the spelling Sofia, I think it's prettier written down. I lived in Spain for five years and only knew the name from there and when I moved back to England I thought it was weird written down with a -ph-!

Pronunciation-wise I pronounce both the same way. I think with a lot of names you'll get people saying it wrong and I wouldn't base my choice on other people. My son is called Caleb and my sister in law still can't spell it after two and a half years and I have to correct people on it all the time, but I love the name and that's what matters!

I am a Sophia and I have to say I still think my name is really unique. I rarely meet people with the same name as me whether or not is it spelt like mine or Sofia. Go for it!

I think Sofia encourages people to pronounce the name 'properly' but Sophia almost encourages you to pronounce it like Sophie with an A on the end... I'd want people to pronounce the name Sofia but think I prefer the spelling Sophia... Lol

I've just had to wiki how to pronounce Sofia! I've always thought it was the same as Sophia but just spelled different. I much prefer Sophia- spelling and pronunciation, sorry! x

Thanks everyone.

We have decided to go with a different girls name, with 'Sophia' as our back up in case she doesn't look like our other name haha Liam pointed out that people will pronounce it however the hell they want regardless or how we spell or pronounce it ourselves lol down to the fact the name is one people are familiar with and pronounce differently anyway.

I find it all stressful and annoying that I could give my child a name I like and people could constantly, her whole life, pronounce it differently to how I intended it to be said lol so that was def a deciding factor in it not being our main name choice.

Really appreciate all the input though ladies, has been super helpful in our decision making process xx

I knew an Italian family who named their daughter 'Sofina' (or it couple have been 'Sophina' lol), I think that name is beautiful, and really different from Sophia/Sofia, despite it being so close in spelling. Maybe an idea? X

We named our 2 yo Sophia, I prefer the ph spelling personally :)

We considered both but we went with a theme in the end, we have a Grace, Sophia and Ava - all Hollywood screen sirens lol!!

I like it spelt Sophia, not sure why just like how it looks x

I have a little seccond cousin called Sofia, so that :D

I love the name but I personally think it's going to become very popular. Dd has two in her nursery class and 3 in her after schools/day care class. One mummy from nursery has just named her baby Sofia Grace.

There's also a Disney cartoon called Sofia the first. Which I think will bump up the popularity of the name.

It truly is a beautiful name though. I really like it.
