Okay I swore id stay away from popular names that are huge at the moment but have always loved the name Sofia/Sophia. We discounted it immediately though as wanted a name that is a bit more unique and original... However it's been playing on my mind that I haven't actually met any Sophia's or seen any birth announcements recently for one either.

Anyone know many kids with that name? Trying to gauge how popular it really is.

Also which spelling is better? Sofia or Sophia?
I think Sofia encourages people to pronounce the name 'properly' but Sophia almost encourages you to pronounce it like Sophie with an A on the end... I'd want people to pronounce the name Sofia but think I prefer the spelling Sophia... Lol (keeping up?) however I think Sofia is a less common way of spelling the name in the uk which achieves some of the uniqueness I was hoping for with my baby name...

Ideas/opinions please?

Thanks girls :)

I can't say I know any Sophia's.. Family..friends.. Or my children's friends..even at my children's school! I'd say it's not common.. I prefer the Sofia spelling just because it's different :) x

I know a 2 year old Sophia, but only the one, I do a lot of newborn shoots and it's not a name I have come across in the last year or so at all! I like the spelling Sofia, think it's a less common way of spelling it, it's a lovely name hon x

I love the name, and personally I would go with Sofia x

Really glad it's not coming up too often. The fact it's always in the top 3 most popular names and has been for 5 years or so def put me off massively. So nice to know it's not actually as common as I thought! Was worried it would be a bit like Lilly, Isabelle and Amelia which seem to be everywhere at the moment (annoyingly, all names I also love hehe)

I know 1 Sophia but much prefer Sofia as to me that's how is should be spelt in my mind if you know what I mean :)

Sophia is one of our middle names for a girl, but if I was choosing it as a first name I may well spell it Sofia as it's more unique xx

Sofia, it is a lovely name and I've never met one.

Sophia is very common where I'm from (Glasgow). I don't like it spelled Sofia to be honest but that's just my opinion. She would need to constantly correct people and i think that would be annoying. How about Anna-Sophia if you're looking for something a bit different? X

Only know one Sophia who was born last month (not sure how they've spelt it)..
I would pronounce both of them exactly the same but Sofia is a pretty way of spelling it :)
Lovely name xx

I know a couple of Sophia's and 1 Sofia, so not huge amounts, I think it's a very pretty name. I would personally spell it Sophia. Also I pronounce them both the same, should they be pronounced differently? At the moment it's all Isla's where I live xxx

Sofia is more the Spanish way of spelling and pronouncing it. It's S-fia as opposed to Sow-Fia... Lol hard to explain, maybe google the pronunciation lol

When I read the thread I read the names as Sofia.. and then read Sophia, as sophie with an A. If that's any help..i think how you spell it will impact hugely on how people will pronounce it when read. x

Love the name and only know one child with the name! Can't be much help with the spelling as I would be in the same boat!!!

I love the name, it was one of ours but it's my best friends favourite so we aren't considering it. I prefer Sophia to Sofia to be honest xx

I like the name but not enough to consider it. I do prefer Sofia tho as I think Sophie should be spelt like that. I work with a sofia who hates her name and calls herself sofie. Xx

I don't know any Sophia's, love the spelling Sophia, just softer and feminine in my opinion xx

Don't know any Sophia's at my secondary if that helps...not so sure how common it is at primary...

Sophia was one of our top names if it was a girl, think it sounds more English in. weird way....
