Need HUGE help!

Such a hard decision! We are team yellow too and thinking about names at the moment. I liked Cohen for a boy but I read it can be very controversial as a first name (mostly on American sites.) don't know if you've heard of this?

Yes a lot of people who aren't Jewish seem to think Jews will find it offensive.

I am Jewish and have spoken to A LOT of very religious people, none of whom find it offensive when a Jew uses it for their child, only when someone who isn't Jewish uses it. generally it's just seen as weird lol

No, I don't think that's weird!

If I KNEW people wouldn't shorten Angelica or Penelope then I'd def pick one of them but people always shorten names. THAT annoys me lol
The reason I want a name that can be shortened to something nice is because of the fact people can't help themselves lol grr hate that my hubby hates Penelope so much :-( just wish it could be shortened to something he likes so I can try twist his arm that way! I'd never shorten it though - I love longer names!

Oliver is a lovely name. My cousin just had a boy and named him Oliver so that's out the question too lol (for me and Liam... Don't let my cousins baby affect your baby naming decisions! Hahaha) :p

Ah I see your thinking and know exactly what you mean! I do like Ollie but if I wanted to call him Ollie all the time I'd just name him that. My husband mentioned to his dad that we were thinking about oliver and he immediately said "oh Ollie, that's nice" and I was just like er no... it's Oliver, not Ollie but I know it doesn't matter how many times I said that they would just call him Ollie anyway! I love Samuel and Benjamin too but I'd be so annoyed if people just automatically used Sam and Ben - seems inevitable that they would!

What a blummin minefield naming a child is!!!

Names are tough, especially names you can both agree on! We have a Max and it suits him so well and people always comment it's a nice strong name. If this one is a boy we've chosen Theo but I'm completely stumped on girls names. I like a few but don't love any. Also like you there are some names I like but don't like the shortened version and I know people will instantly call them the shortened version! Girls names I like are Matilda, Alanna, Evelyn, Lydia and Alexandra but I don't love any! xxx

It's a minefield isn't it, it is interesting to hear if from the perspective of somebody who is Jewish as I'm sure many of the forum posts I've seen were not! I think if you like a name you should go for it, provided you and hubby can agree of course :)
We are thinking of going for a welsh name as we like the sound of it, we live in Wales but neither of us are welsh. I'm not sure our families will like it but then again it's not their baby!

Oh I quite like Benedict for a boy too.xx

Alexandra is definitely the best in that list, it's also my name ;-)

I think it's a very strong beautiful name :)

Hi

I love your theory of Eton or law school applications, I say this about names all the time. I think with a child it's all well and good giving them a cutesy name, but you have to think of the playground as well as the boardroom! I picked Caleb for our son because I liked how it's pretty much impossible to shorten (I have a think about full names/names shortened to something nice) and I think it'll see him through all of the ages. Unfortunately his initials are CJ so it's just a ready made nickname, but I think that's the case with most -J names... MJ, DJ, AJ etc...

I really like your name choices, love Lorelei but my OH hated it when I brought it up. Rory is a cute nickname for it too and then she could use the full name when she wanted. I also like Penelope but I'm not keen on Penny for a nickname.

For boys I LOVE Jasper, that was on our list with Caleb, but we thought Jasper Jepps sounded too much like a superhero's real life identity! Cohen is cute, a girl I know from school has a son called that and I like it.

For this baby we've pretty much picked Zara for a girl and I want Reuben for a boy, but OH thinks it sounds too pretentious... I love Ru for a nickname, my brother's nickname is Ru so I think it'd be cute!

This pregnancy I have way more girls names than boys, whereas before I'd have been screwed with a girl, I liked Cadence and that was it, and OH later confessed to hating it!

A long girl name I LOVE is Francesca - there are so many things you can shorten it to - Frankie/Cesca/Cesh. I use these pretty regularly as it's my godmothers daughters name. I also think Francesca works brilliantly in a high powered job.

I like Alexandra, Rhiannon and Charlotte for longer names that can be shorted and aren't too popular.

With boys names what about Frederick (Freddie), Sebastian (Seb), Alexander (Alex)?

I do really like Cohen though and (sorry!) but I know dogs called Jasper too (one used to get very excited when it saw my ex - put me off for life!!) xx

I read an interview with the Eton admissions guy YEARS ago and he said if he is sat there with nothing between two candidates, he will often bring the decision down to a detail like the name. Do they sound like they've had the right upbringing? Will they fit in nicely without tarnishing anyone's opinions on the school? Does it stand out in a good strong way?
It really made me think. And with job applications, imagine one position being open and 5 candidates all equally right for the job. The CVs are two Lily's, a Mia, an Amelia or a Lorelei. Your eyes go to the more unusual name and I think that'll sway it... In my opinion anyway haha

It's nice hearing people's opinions on Cohen when it isn't a name they've grown up with any real association with. Our last name is Courtney and I LOVE the idea of the child's nickname being CoCo (Cohen Courtney hehe).
With Lorelei I just can't tell if it's a pretty name or not. SO much is my association with Gilmore Girls that I've actually lost the ability to feel anything neutral about the name but don't want to name a child that JUST because I love GG haha I have to say, don't like the name Reuben at all (any biblical names because of growing up in the Jewish community and knowing SO many kids with those names growing up haha) but Ru is a crazy cool nickname!

Hey Dani! Hope you're good, babe?
Francesca is a name Liam loves and I don't HATE... just don't like it enough, I don't think. However I LOVE Cesca as a shortened version so it's definitely one that keeps sitting on my mind!
With the boys names, Alexander is my cousins name so that's out (so is Xander, which I've always had a soft spot for since Buffy haha) and Sebastian is the name my best friend just named her little newborn! We call him Sebbie and it's very cute hehe
As for Frederik... Again, I dislike the full lengthed name but Freddie is super cute. Grr not enough though.

Glad people seem to like Cohen though! As I said above, it's nice to get non-Jewish opinions on it that aren't 'ooh you could offend Jews!' Lol I got that bit covered already!! Haha

Still love Jasper. I don't care if every dog on the country is named Jasper. However Liam still hates it... And Penelope :-( pfft men!

Honestly, I can't thank people enough for your help and opinions here. I was SO worried for so long about posting and wasn't sure it would be all that useful but it really has been. Definitely beats trawling through any more bloody baby name websites!! Haha

What do people think of the girls name Carmen?
When you hear it, do you get any immediate associations? What class would you say a woman with that name would be? Is it a pretty name?

Another one I came up with but am not sure about but Liam really loves... Think I'm actually more difficult with names than Liam is after all haha so many names I quite like but 'not enough'

OMG could someone nickname her 'Car-Man Courtney' ?! Haha

My friends daughter is Carmena which I think is lovely, very similar to Carmen but I think it sounds more feminine x

Rory is a cute nickname for it too I have to say, don't like the name Reuben at all (any biblical names because of growing up in the Jewish community and knowing SO many kids with those names growing up haha) but Ru is a crazy cool nickname!

A friend has a son called Ruari - which is pronounced Rory, it's the Irish way. But his nickname is Ru which I have to admit I think is ace!

I'm fine thanks Hun - hope your ok too?

I adore Cesca - I actually thought about it for Moo! Francesca was going go be my compromise name, I ADORE Frankie (everyone hates it) so I could have called her Frankie and got away with it!

If you do have a Cohen - get Liam to do him a babygrow saying 'keep calm, my mum is Jewish' that should stop any of the offending comments!

I have to agree with Liam I'm not a fan of jasper - I don't know why it's just not a name I'm a fan of, it's one of them names where you hear it and go 'nooooo' and I really don't know why! I do think Penelope is quite cute though - not sure about Penny though!

I don't mind Carmen - it's definitely not an offensive name IMO. I know a very very posh old customer of mine called Carmen and a friends mum is called Carmen and I would exactly call her posh ;-) the only association I have is Carmen Electra - nothing bad she just makes me think of my ex who had a massive crush on her!!

I think I'm the same as you, but mine is middle names - my current choice is Mollie Ruby which I love, but her middle name changes at least once a week. He's not too bad, we both come up with a list of names (he had a list, I had Mollie) and that WAS her name it was going to have to grow on him because it was the only girls name I loved without it been associated to anyone I know personally. Luckily enough he loved it - tough tits if he didn't!! Xx

I think it does come down to the name a lot of the time! I would always want my child to stand out from the others and choosing a slightly unusual name makes that first bit easier. With Caleb I didn't want to go too far out with it, thinking I'd give him something people would be able to spell. Failed on that though, even my sister in law spells it Calab! You don't even say it like that! My name is Fayrouze, but I've always been known as Fay because my name is impossible to spell! Luckily my parents spelled it that way on purpose to shorten it instead of Fairuz.

I love CoCo as a nickname, it's so cute! I have to say I've never really liked the Gilmore Girls and have only managed to sit through one episode, but I still think of Lorelei as a really pretty name, so I'd say I was pretty neutral!

I get what you're saying about knowing loads of people with biblical names, I guess that would put you off! Most of my OHs family are Jehovah's Witnesses so I didn't really want anything biblical... I just love the old testament names, wanted to stay away from the more popular names though like Noah, Isaac, Jacob, Joshua etc... The names don't go down well with my dad's side of the family, all Muslim, but pah, who cares. Even when my dad told me Caleb is very close to "dog" in arabic (calb) and is used as an insult. I knew it meant dog anyway but I just loved the name! I guess I'm just the rebel of the family haha!! My Dad has to love me just the way I am!

Lastly, I spent five years living in Spain so I met a lot of Carmens, but I like the name. Fictional character-wise it reminds me of Carmen Sandiego, the detective game I had when I was a child!

I am pretty similar. Wont have any of the popular names, I know 3 Emily Grace's! Freya wasnt even top 50 when we named her, now its in the 20's I think.
Also hate all the newer names like Tyler, skylar, Jayden, Kayden etc etc.
Our Girls names are : Enid, Lucy, Rosa, Rosabelle, Elise, Cora, Seren, Arianna, Lissie, Nina and Nora

Carmen immediately makes me think of hair products? Or Carmen Elektra. But its a nice name x

Argh yes, Agee with hating all the names you mentioned lol afraid, pretty as some of them sound, they are just trashy now.
Rosabelle is so pretty. I love that! Liam won't go for any names that can be made in to Bella *eye roll* because of stupid twilight. I really like all your name choices. Not very 'me' unfortunately, but all so pretty and slightly unusual without being too out there, which I love.

Ft90 HOOOOW can you not like Gilmore Girls? So confused! Haha Caleb is a name growing in popularity at the moment. Seen a few on the birth announcements of the forum and a Facebook friend just had a boy and called him Caleb. Reminds me of a bad guy from Buffy haha awesome character!
Decided I definitely can't do Carmen. Pretty enough name just doesn't sit right with me! X

Dani, I'm great thanks.
Liam is so smug after I read your comments about Jasper lol
We both like Cesca. He loves Francesca... I'm still not sold for worry someone would shorten her name to Fran or Frannie... :-/
LOVE the idea of the onesie though haha
Wish I could just say to Liam that Penelope is her name whether he likes it or not. He is SO in to every aspect of this pregnancy and I just can't do that to him... Much as I'd love to! X

I had Cohen on my boys list at thr very start (we are huge OC Fans). I know a dog called Jasper but thats ok with me as hes a pretty cool dog!

Girls names i loved were Lydia, Annabelle (know u cant have that), iris, lucy, corally, Ava and in the end we went with Daisy.

Boys was harder for me as I liked ones my oh hated, cohen, Thomas, Archer, and picked out Dexter if we had a boy.
Good luck! "

I do find it so weird that people who aren't Jewish would pick a Jewish surname as a child's first name lol
I love the name Daisy. In fact I love most flowery girls names but my husband is dead against flower names *sigh* lol
I love Archer and Dexter! Both slightly uncommon but neither are weird or too out there :)
Dexter reminds me of Felix (must be the fact they both have an 'x' in lol) Felix was on my boys name list at the beginning but hubby said it reminded him too much of the cat and it sounded 'horrible' but I think it sounds a bit sexy and think it's an awesome name. However it's now becoming more popular which has out me off somewhat.

I have this quality about me where if something is popular or in fashion I start to dislike it! I always LOVED Cheryl Cole because I was a huge Girls Aloud fan and as soon as she became the nations sweetheart I could stand her lol same thing with names I guess. (I'm so weird! Sorry all!)

I get like that Sarah, I like something when it's unique or different then change my mind when everyone else jumps on the bandwagon! I think we're very similar in some ways!! xx
