Ok, so I've been offered to be induced on my due date, due to having a big baby.

My previous pregnancy I developed pre eclampsia towards the end of my pregnancy and was induced at 40weeks. I spent a total of 6days in hospital and the to be honest (apart from giving birth to my son) the experience was awful, not one I want to remember :(

So this time around I'm wondering if to leave it and see if I go into labour naturally?
Was wondering if anyone had a induced labour and a natural labour and if they found any of them more/less stressful?
Or should I be induced and at least I won't go over and I can be a little more organised with someone looking after my other son etc

With Alice they said she was a big baby but my consultant was pro natural birth and I gave birth to her in under 2 hours with little pain, she only weighed 8lb 15oz though not the 9-10lb expected from her growth charts.

The second measured average so I didn't have that discussion but a second very nice labour with little pain and a 8lb 6oz baby. 6 hour labour that time but three minutes from waters been broke to arrival! I have no experience in induction but personally I would want them to try breaking waters and waiting first xx

I've not had a natural birth as i was induced, i will never do it again. It lasted nearly 4 days before they decided it was not working and sent me for an emergency c section.

What doll face says, that's one of the risks with inducing.

My baby was only 6lb 11oz and still did a lot of damage, a big baby isn't a guarantee for a messy delivery.

pitocin the whole story

crack up the pit

with references.

I would only opt in, if there is a slight possibility you'd be getting pre-eclampsia again and they would be able to see that in your urine then I would consider getting induced because pre-eclampsia is very dangerous however if there isn't any signals pointing that this is the case this time I wouldn't induce on the grounds for having a possible big baby in all honesty.

i did originally have polyhydramnios (too much fluid), but a scan today showed that everything is back to 'normal' now :)

my first baby was 9lb 2oz, so not massive, but quite large considering im quite small lol

i think due to reading the risks with being induced. that i may wait for a natural onset of labour. hopefully he will come around full term xx

I would personally try to avoid induction at all costs unless it was for something like pre-eclampsia. X

Still practicing on the new phone.....

I have no experience of either but I would choose natural. Your body and your baby will do their job when they're ready. It's hard to medically induce labour which is why it often doesn't work. I fully intend to turn down induction, even at 40+12 unless there's any medical risk to me or squiggle. Obviously if it's because of a medical condition that's different.
If your instinct says wait then I would listen to it xxx

I would personally get induced of after speaking to consultant if they recommended it.if not then id have to debate lol! Its a hard decision! Spesh if u had bad experience before x

mummy to ds 11/7/11
pregnant *team pink* due 12/9/13

Natural all the way if I could.

I started off naturally (in-fact I did about almost 40 hours on my own at home)

At hospital things didn't progress as fast as they should so I had what is known as augmented labour. I was given a Syntocinon drip to help me dilate.

It was a lot more full on, very painful but I actually preferred it as I knew things were progressing... I had a hit of diamorphine but no EPI. I remember the Dr that put my drip in said I'd be calling him back begging for an EPI

I would put your case for a natural birth forward. If they say no then make sure they give you some very valid reasons and don't be fobbed off.

There is evidence to support the fact 'bigger' babies are actually easier to deliver as they use the force of gravity better...

After my last pregnancy, where they tried inducing due to pre-eclampsia and baby's heart rate kept dropping every time I had a contraction and I ultimately had to have an emergency c-section, I'm totally against induction. However, apparently the problems were due to her being so small and therefore unable to cope with the contractions.

I'd go for a natural labour, unless advised by a doctor that induction would be best.

the dr told me my hospital stopped inducing due to size because 50% where un nessecery and a lot of women ened up having c sections when they could have had a natural birth. she also said the charts are outdated and we are all getting bigger and having bigger babies, don't know how right she was but I loved my labour both times -- my first almost flew out lmao xx

Very very true Redbear! at my 28w 4D scan the lady told me I was going to have a 8lb 5oz baby he ended up being only 6lb 11 oz and my workmate had a large baby and said the exact same thing about the gravity! I've actually read about a tiny baby popping back in again!

:O What that cant feel nice! Yeh I would wait the extra few days no matter how annoying to get an easy good birth. I know not all induction is worse but most seem to say its more painful x

I've experienced both and I have no negatives with regards to either. I had a lovely induction, I've also had both lovely and awful natural labours.
I'd take drs advice tbh x

Redbear, the reason why it is meant to be more painful is because natural labour has got to do with natural oxytocin which ensures the release of endorphin's. With a synthetic hormone trying to mimic this, your body stops producing (with augmentation) the natural production of oxytocin and therefor the production of endorphin's is decreased if not stopped or not even produced at all or not enough when induced. I was high as a kite on my own endorphin's that's why I coped fine on G&A only which only kept me breathing right in my opinion it didn't do much about the pain it's more of an distraction lol but I can understand not everyone is going to feel the same as I did and might feel the need for further pain relief. xx

I was induced 2 days before my due date with my son due to high bp.....they put the pessary in at 5pm and by 8 my waters broke and i laboured into the night on the ward had pethadine......at 5am i was transferred to l and d and put on drip and given epidural.... I gave birth at 2.30 pm and stayed in til next morning.

With my daughter i went into labour naturally 1.30am the morning after my due date.....had no pain relief and gave birth in water at 1.30pm the same day.

Second birth was definitely less stressful and i went home 3 hours after she was born.

I would chose natural any day after my lo birth. I went in to be induced at 39wks and was i hospital 4 days before i ended uo having an emergancy section. My induction failed and if i have another baby i dont want ti go through that again. Xx

The problem with just following the advice from one doctor is that they don't always agree with eachother so it can just be a lottery as to which doctor you get. I think most doctors these days don't tend to agree with inducing because baby is 'too big'. There was talk of inducing me early for this reason, then strong pressure to induce at 41 weeks because that's what they do as standard where I live. I refused both. I had my 9lb 5oz girl after a long but great labour 10 days after my due date. She had a super steady heart beat throughout and an APAGAR score of 9/10. I had one small tear and a quick recovery. I wouldn't induce for a 'big baby' unless they can prove that it is abnormally big for some abnormal reason. I believe on the whole our bodies won't grow babies that are too big for us. If a baby was too big it could end in distress for mother/baby and a CS but those risks are pretty high with induction so I don't see the logic of inducing just incase.

That's exactly what my consulatant said to me, I had previously seen a jr doctor who wanted to induce before or on 40 week due to her measuring big, im 6ft tall so why would my body make a small baby? I was 9lb 11oz when I was born so I wouldn't expect my baby to be a six pounder. Anyway the head consultant over ruled him she was very pro natural and said exactly what you did... I went on to give birth to a baby girl ONE DAY over due, In under two hours on gas and air she weighed 8lb 15oz after all that (not even big!) so totally trust your body unless you have diabetes or something you should be fine....

saying that my friend who is a skinny Minnie gave birth to her 11lb 3oz baby naturally - because she wasn't overweight they never tested her for diabetes or scanned her for growth and she measured normal, so think if you where not under any special care you wouldn't even know your due a big baby and they wouldn't induce! And she was fine - the lad was almost as big as her!

I would love a natural labour this time. I went overdue last time, it was awful..I spent the whole labour strapped on a monitor and hooked up to a drip.
