My daughter, Alexis June was born yesterday at 6.23pm, weighing 8lbs 6oz.
Was all a bit traumatic in the end, so please forgive the rambling nature of the rest of this post!
So I had my waters broken at about 10am, but it has been to be done by the doc, as the midwife couldn't do it (not the best start huh?!). Was left for 2 hours, but no contractions, so in went the drip and on went the monitors. Things started up pretty quickly after that and they were really quite sore. I had forgotten that I packed the TENS machine, so after suffering for a couple of hours I finally remembered it, so put that on, which helped some to start with. However it was pretty clear that TENS was not enough.
At this point (4 ish i believe) I could not sit still during the contractions (was using a birthing ball) which was causing issues with monitoring baby's heartbeat, so they tried to attach a clip to baby's head. I also asked for some pethadine, which was given, and it helped, for a while at least. The midwife could not get the clip onto baby's head, so called for a doc to do it. While waiting for him we had to use the abdominal monitors but kept loosing babys heartbeat during contractions (which were coming thick and fast!)
I was struggling lots at this point, cos of SPD pain and contractions. I kept saying I wanted it done, and I couldn't go on etc, esp when I heard them say I was only 4cm!!! The midwife was getting increasingly concerned about baby as we had no idea how the contractions were affecting her. Finally the doctor arrived and he wanted to take bloods from baby to see how she was coping, and to attach the clip.
At this point it all goes fuzzy for me! Darren tells me that the room started to fill, and they all started talking at once, gathering round me looking serious. Turns out they were very concerned about baby and so decided I needed an emergency c-section. Darren was herded out the room to change into scrubs while I was prepped and moved to theatre. I had to have a spinal injection (as hadn't gotten an epidural. So all was finally sorted and numb, and Darren was with me, and they started. Alexis June was born within a few minutes and the moment we heard her cry was the best moment!
Turns out I lost nearly a litre of blood during surgery, so am on iron tablets at the moment, as well as lots of painkillers! Am generally OK, tho walking is sore! Alexis is s doing well, though she is struggling to feed at the breast, so am hand expressing at the moment, and keeping on trying her at the breast.
