My due date had been and gone, had an unsuccessful sweep when I was 40+6... Booked in for induction at 41+2...
So off me and OH go, first thing in the morning. Was very nervous. Hospital was fab!!!
1st tablet was inserted at 11am. And was told I was dilated about half a cm, and my cervix was still thick. And was told I'd be checked at 5pm.
Doctor came and said my cervix was still unfavourable. So inserted another tablet and was told id be checked again in the morning when they would decide if they could break my waters. Was ok with the 1st tablet, didn't think anything of it.
My OH went home about 7.30 and I settled down to watch corrie and I started getting really sore period cramps. They were coming and going. But not in any pattern. I had a couple of paracetamol and a bath, and was in excruciating pain by 10pm... Was given codine and paracetamol and managed to get some sleep. Woke up every hour tho... Was waiting till 6.30am as that's when I was told I would get my check up! And was all set for getting my waters broken.
So along came the doctor, cervix still unfavourable... Another tablet for me
and was told I would probably be given a 24hour break, then the tablet process repeated. I was devastated. After all the pain I had been in, nothing.
So 3rd tablet in. Me and OH went a walk around the hospital. I had to come back to ward as the pain was getting unbeatable again. Was given paracetamol and hooked up to the monitor, to be told they wernt contraction. They were just cramps caused by the tablets. I broke down by this point as I thought if that wasn't even contractions how could I handle labour. . The pains were awful. I got more codine and was actually writhing around the bed in pain. So midwife came and gave me an internal and said they should be able to break my waters. I went for another bath and painkillers kicked in. We waited 6 hours to be taken to labour ward. was taken at 7.30
Midwife couldn't insert the thing in my hand for the drips etc... And I had said I wanted an epidural as soon as I went down. So they were getting that organised as they were in theatre and I was next on the list! Yipee!
Doctor came and put thing in my hand. Was fine.
8pm Time to break my waters. I was given the gas and air, told to have a few and use it while she was doing it.
Wow! That was an experience, the sensation was weird and I panicked a bit, but used my gas and air and could feel the gush of fluid, I was 1-2cms.
So now I was hooked up to the drip to bring on contractions. And boy did they start coming...!! Was fine with them for a while, using my gas and air. Was hard being hooked up to the drip, and had constant monitor round the baby to keep an eye on heartbeat. So was quite awkward. The contractions really started to get sore and I was offered the morphine injection, I really didn't want it, but at that moment in time i couldn't say yes quick enough... And it was done quickly and really calmed me down and helped me for a while...
The about 10.30 came epidural man! Yeahy! So got all ready for that, was fine getting it inserted. Really was just a weird sensation.
I was comfiest on my knees bent over the back of the bed. Then at 11.30 I just felt this pressure and sensation to push... And I was telling the midwife, and she said no way. It's just the feeling. Maybe my epidural wasn't the best. But I was like I need to push!!!!!
So she thought she would examine me, and I was 9cms... Yikes!
So I tried so hard not to push. But it was so hard to stop your body doing what you wanted to do. But I tried and I tried using the gas and air. It was so hard. The pain and pressure was unreal, and the epidural man came back, and topped it up. But could still feel way more than I was expecting to.
Then midwife said I was 10cms, but she wanted me to lye down for an hour and let baby make its way down. But the pressure and feeling I was getting I couldn't, no way could I just lye there and take gas and air through it. I was getting quite upset by this point, because I could feel so much, and was getting exhausted.
So she said I could push... Was pushing for an hour and a half... Could feel every contraction I was getting, and using my gas and air, they wernt painful, but could really feel the point to push... So I told the midwife and she watched for the head. My OH was amazing. Holding my hand. Really being a great support. Between my contractions I had a rest. And just lay...
Then came the head - ouch! This was painful... Very stingy... I was panicking again because I could feel so much, the stretching etc... But midwife just calmed me down, and I was screaming a bit haha! The the head was out. My OH was amazed, then last push and my babies body was born.
The cord was round his neck but it just slipped off, no major concern.
My OH told me he was a boy.
Baby was put on me for skin to skin, daddy cut the cord.
My baby boy was born at 02.38am...
I was given the injection to deliver the placenta, that was over in no time.
I had a tear (2nd degree seen it on my notes) was stitched up quickly tho by midwife, that was quite painful...!!!
And midwife told me my epidural had failed. I did get some relief, but not what I should have. But now I look back it wa perfect, I had a great amount of relief from the pain. But could still feel everything.
I had a shower, and was back up on in patient ward by 5am feeding my baby. We got home at 3pm the next day.
He's feeding and sleeping great. I'm a little sore. Feel like I need a massage in achey all over.
Would do it again in a heartbeat...!!!
Would probably say worst part was the pain getting the tablets. But I love my boy so much... Can't imagine life before him, it just feels so right and natural for him to be here xxx
