Growth scan - baby measuring big

Wondering if anyone has any insight into how accurate these growth scans are?

Ive been looking about a month ahead of my dates pretty much throughout my pregnancy. Absolutley everyone comments on how big I am, and tbh right now i feel as big as i did when i was right at the end of my last pregnancy, and i've only just hit 35 weeks.

So midwife booked me in for a growth scan and i had it done yesterday, and sure enough baby is measuring big for my dates. She is measuring on at least 37 weeks, and apparently weighs 6ibs 7ounces already. What worries me more than this is that her head and abdominal cirucumferences are really big. Her tummy is on the 97th centile of the chart and her head on 95th centile.

Is it normal to have such a big head and tummy measurement for baby? - am kinda worried whether thats healthy for baby.

The other thing im worried about is how i'll get her out in labour. Im only tiny myself (5ft 1, and 7.5stone pre pregnancy). And my daughter weighted just 6lbs 6ounces at birth and she felt big enough when i was pushing her out. If this baby weighs more than that already, and i still have 5 weeks to go to term, i'm really worried about how i'll cope in labour.

Any past experiences of growth scans/measurments would be greatly appreciated xx

In my mums case with me and my sibilings it was right!
I was a massive 10lb 7 and brother 11lb 3 or 5 lol.

But loads of my friends and ladies on here have had growth scans and baby has either weighed 2/3lbs more or less than estimated!!

They r only estimates hun.

I had a scan last tues and his head, belly and thigh are all measuring 2 weeks ahead than what iam.. In wxpecting a chunk tho. Atleast 9lbs if not more!
Im 6ft and OH is 6ft1 i was a huge baby so im gettin prepared!

Id be shocked if he was any less lol xx

Thanks. Gonna call midwife tomorrow and see if she wants to see me any earlier x

Hi, I have had a growth scan at 28 weeks and have another one at 30 weeks. My baby's head is on the 95th centile and abdominal circumference is about 98%. Silly question probably, but have you been tested for high glucose levels?
I was diagnosed with diabetes at 12 weeks and they are not surprised about the size of my baby girl. I will be induced at 38 weeks.
I am part of a pregnancy diabetes forum on facebook and the ladies on there are always commenting on how wrong the growth scans are. They are told their babies will be huge and they are induced early and out pops a 6lb baby! Growth scans can be up to 2lb wrong.
Hope this helps xx

Ah thanks for the reply hun. They have tested me at 28 weeks for gtt, and it was negative, but my brother has type 1 diabetes and it does run in my family. At the growth scan the sonographer did ask if id been checked for diabetes. Your measurements seem similar to my babys. Is that why they decided to induce you at 38 weeks? - because you're diabetic or because baby is measuring big? - I wonder if i should ask to be induced early too x

I was told by 2 sonographers and 1 mw that I was measuring at least 2 weeks ahead for most of my pregnancy...I was even told at one point to expect at least an 11lb baby - which quite frankly terrified me!

I had a GTT at 28 wks due to slightly higher BMI - and this came back clear. After going through my diet, a stand in mw told me that due to my fruit juice "addiction" (I craved citrus!) I was consuming far too much sugar and this had basically led to baby being very big. Joshua was already measuring on the 95th centile. I basically spent the last 4 or 5 weeks of my pregnancy quite upset and absolutely dreading labour...

At 34 weeks, I was told that baby weighed almost 7lb already!

To cut a long story short, I gave birth on my EDD to a 7lb 13oz baby...so it just goes to show how wrong they can be xxx

Oh this has made me feel better! -- I wouldnt mind a big healthy baby, but im tiny and am seriously worried that i wont be able to push her out.

Well, I did end up having a c section, but this wasn't related to the size of Joshua...it's a long story! (In birth stories, but if you don't want TMI, don't read it lol!)

I always assumed that growth scans were pretty accurate, but it appears that they can be out by quite a bit!

At the end of the day, you don't really have any control over it, so try not worry...xxx

I measured between 4 and 6 weeks bigger throughout my pregnancy. I had growth scans and was told he would be big but was never told how big. I ended up giving birth to a 9lb 5oz baby, with a little help from ventouse and an episiotomy.m

His head is off the charts big, always has been!! Try to not worry too much. A lot of times the estimates are wrong.

I'm being induced because of the diabetes - not the size. Part of the side effects of the diabetes are that the placenta ages early, so it's safer not to leave baby cooking in there for too long. My 2nd growth scan is tomorrow, I'll let you know how we get on and if there are any changes. xx

Yeah that's what i'm thinking now that I cant do anything about it anyway, what will be, will be. I dont particularly want to be induced and I dont want a c section if i can avoid it, so I'm not going to push to have anything done. I'll just have to try and deal with it when im in labour! lol. p.s. i'll have a look for your birth story - as long as it doesnt freak me out too much! lol x

tri hopping! - sorry just a wee question - does everyone have a growth scan?? x

Hiya - no it's not routine, you can request one if you're worried about baby being big/small, or midwife requests for one if she is also worried about size of baby x

ah thank you! .... think i'm going to need one! from a fmaily of big babies and I'm nearly toppling over now ha

hope baby isn't a giant baby for your sake :) xx

Scan was fine today - Baby was a real wriggler, she is still measuring big. The estimated weight is about 4lbs already. Head circumferenace and abdominal circumferance are both above the top line and the in the report it states 'growth remains above the 90th centile'. Nobody seemed particulaly concerned about the size though and they said that no decision will be made before 34 weeks as to whether I will need a c-section or need to be induced before 38 weeks. I dug my heels in a bit and asked for another scan in 2 weeks time, to which they agreed. :). xx

I feel the same - like no one bothers to truly explain anything, and wont do anything unless i push for it. lets see what they say then in 2 weeks for you. I just spoke to my midwife about my scan and she didnt seem overly bothered either, said she will see me at my appt next week and we can discuss it then...by then i'll be over 36 weeks anyway. It's funny how they are just not in a hurry to do anything. So...im just gonna take a chill pill (not literally lol). Am not going to worry about it - what will be, will be x
