This might need to go somewhere else. But I've got a few.questions about after the birth. What did you do after baby was born and you were on the ward? If you had a difficult birth did the mw help so you could get some sleep. If you got home quite quickly how did you establish a routine? If you bottle feed how do you know when baby next requires a feed, like how many hours? And how much formula for one bottle? I helped my friend the first night she came out of hospital but that was 7 years ago and I've forgotten what we did.
Any advice? I've been thinking about all this for ages but feel a bit thick for asking ;-)

hey my labour with Connor was pretty ok so i had him at around 11.50 my partner had to leave an hour or so after tht connor slept i had a wash then he cried and cried and cried i fed him myselfe then the nurses took him away for an hour so i could have a wee rest then brought him back tofeed again. He just lay sleeping next to me in the bed and i just sat scared to move lol. Dunno if tht help u hun think everything would depend on what kinda labour u have. My friend was put in a ward where i was left in the little room i had him in and left hospital the next again morning.

Well i had my daughter 7 weeks early, so after i had her she was taken to special care unit, and i was taken to a side room so i didnt have to be on the ward with all the other mums and there baby's as i didnt have mine :( but i was allowed to go down whenever i wanted to see her.. so they looked after her that night while i tried to get some sleep... didnt actually work as i was worried about her even though she was fine, plus i had a toothache so couldnt sleep anyway!

but the midwifes were really great, they told me everything that i could do, change her, feed her (how much she was allowed as she had to be tube fed to start with) but it sort of came natural after that!

xx

My 2 experiences were completly different!
With Lacey I had complications after, could not move off the bed so the mw's helped alot. They fed and changed her for me then when I recovered, they still took her one night so I could sleep and they showed me how to bath her. I was in hospital for 3 days with her.
With charley, I only stayed in for 5 hours. Me and Tim did everything straight away but we were more experienced this time.
They both only took about 3oz's to start with, Lacey fed every 4 hours, charley every 3 hours.
I didn't get Lacey into a routine until she was about 2 months cos I didn't know you had too but with charley I did it straight away because I knew it would be easier in the long run! I hope that helps x.

Thanks Kelly and chaz! Chaz did you just feed when charley or lacey seemed hungry and it ended up being 3 and 4 hours between feeds? X

my friend just had her baby and the hospital gave her bottles to give to him every 2 hours maybe all the hospitals different im not sure they were little glass ones that she added a teet bit to the top.x

Yeah they both fell into their own routines. I'm really lucky with charley cos it works out the same time everyday and it's worked around school run!!

i had Noa 00.13 after a cup of tea n cuddle i had a bath n Demba had Noa. Then he had to leave n me n Noa got a space on the ward. It was like 4 in the morning, i had been there for about 18 hours i was shattered but Noa wouldnt settle and wouldnt latch on the boob. So the MWs keept pushing my boob in his mouth and i struggled to 7am- at this point i was exhousted. A new MW came on shift THANK GOD she took Noa away n i fell asleep straight away. woke up after an hour again tho as he was crying next to me. They helped with the first nappy and kept on with trying to get him to latch on, i stayed in to 5 in the afternoon then i had had enough cuz i was so tired i just wanted to go home n sleep. xx

I had my son at 00.29 so had shower straight after then went up to ward. Kyan breastfed straight after the birth then slept for until 8am. I was wide awake and just kept staring at him and hoping he would wake up.. So I just spent the night texting people etc. In the morning when I woke him up to feed he went back to sleep so I asked the midwives to keep an eye on him while I got wash etc in the bathrooms. Ky fed when he wanted on demand which was mostly everyhour after the first day, sometimes more or less. Hes never really had a routine although its something Im definately going to enforce with this one. My midwives on the ward were pretty useless really didnt show me how to do anything, but I muddled through it myself and went home the same day.

Don't feel daft for asking hun!

After Mitchell was born I had a bath and they wheeled me to the "smoking room" for a ciggy - yup they had smoking rooms inside in them days! lol

On the ward they brought Mitchell to me and I lay on my side in bed to feed - MW helped him latch on and made sure I was comfy.

I had not slept for well over 24 hours but I could not sleep - just kept staring at him lol That evening due to Mitchell not settling very well (We later found out about his health problem) and the MW's worrying about me having no sleep they took him for a few hours so I could try and snooze. Didn't happen tho I was pretty on edge being in there so next day they let me go home!

Mitchell fell into his own routine - well sort of - it was a difficult first 6 months.

xx

My first (14 yrs ago!) I gave birth to him at 9.20pm me and his father had cuddles, i showered and he was sent packing and they took the baby for the night (yep, they used to do that them days lol) I had him back in the morning. He was fed every 4 hours then (they advised) and i stayed in for about 3-4 days.

My 2nd was born at 2am, showered while they looked after the baby (hubby was on the phone to everyone telling them the news lol) and we went up to the ward where he stayed till 4.40am (we were the only ones there!) We were on different baby ward to others as he was born 4 weeks early (some came in the next day, one was 4 weeks early too another had meconium in their waters so kinda like a special care unit where we were just kept on eye on i think) Stayed for 3 days but came back in 2 days after as he had jaundice and needed light treatment...We had to feed him every 2 hours then (was 3 before) so even if he was sleeping we had to set alarms for him!

This time round, Drake was born at 12.15pm, had cuddles with the baby for ages as he was cold so we had skin to skin for a while. Hubby left, midwifes left us too it. My best friend came to visit and then i had a shower. We stayed in the labour room till i left at 5.30pm. I fed Drake on demand in the beginning and he went onto a 3hrly routine himself.

All my boys were bottle fed and were supplied formula in little glass bottles and a packed teat to put on yourself. They never really took alot in the beginning. Maybe 20-30ml? I was shown how to bath the baby with my first but not my other 2.

I can't remember anything else for now!

i was going to say how much is this information worth but they gave it for free damm

I had Tegan at 3.58pm got stitched up then had a shower at 6pm whilst OH looked after Tegan. at 8pm they moved us to a little room to wait for the pediatrician to come round so we could go out but they found Tegan had a heart murmour so they took her to intensive care for some tests i was then put on the ward at 10pm OH was sent home.
the next day i had to wait for the pediatrician to come and check Tegan again she was fine so i was discharged at 1.30pm x

i had K at 00.52, but went to theatre after so we didnt get to the ward for hours! I had E at 15.03 and cant remember what time i got to the ward after getting to hosp and getting out of theatre! they both slept amazingly first night! 2nd night was awful with them both, but i think it was more that i was uncomfy with a cathetar in and a canula in my hand and was sat on those bloody uncomfy beds trying to BF for hours at a time! with K there was a really lovely midwife who kept coming and seeing me cos she was crying loads and i was cos she wouldnt settle, so she took her off to the nursery and gave her a bit of formula! with E, the night midwife was a right c***! i was in a side room and forgotten about, even tho i was feeding for over 5 hours! when i asked for formula, she told me that babies feed like that and to give it another hour! eventually i did get some tho! and she went in the nursery for a bit so i could sleep too! the first day or so of having it, i think she took 1oz tops at a time, but their stomachs grow constantly and every baby's different!

they were really good at helping with changing and did the first poops and stuff and showed us how to bath her and stuff!
