First Appointment today...MW not very nice :(

Hi Everyone,

I'm 8 weeks pregnant today with my first baby. I went expecting to get bloods taken, and to be given dates and get booked in basically, as where I live you see the midwife at 8 weeks. I was met with a sort of sullen looking lady who basically kept moaning that she was only covering the clinic as a favour for a friend, and she didn't know why the PC wasn't working.

She took my contact details, gave me a book to read and sent me on my way saying someone would be in contact within 48 hours to arrange a hosp appt for bloods and stuff! Is this normal? I'm a wee bit concerned I've been fobbed off

But other than that, I love the wee book she gave me and i'm getting so excited now!!

Ah did u get emmas diary? For my booking appoint I saw the nurse who works at the surgery not the midwife. She filled in a short form, checked my urine and sent everything off to midwife. I then got a letter through the post with a day for my proper midwife appoint- she took bloods at this one. And my scan appoint was ina separate letter too.

So basically the first appoint with the nurse was really really quick and she gave me emmas diary too xx

I didn't get emmas diary, but i did get a book called ready, steady, baby She was def a midwife (she kept saying how she was only doing this for a friend lol) and I was supposed to get bloods done too, as I'd already been to the nurse who had actually booked me in for this appointment. But I guess as long as I get my bloods done eventually it will be ok

Aww, you must've left feeling a bit miffed! I'm quite lucky my midwife was lovely. Where I live, they come to your house and go through all your paperwork, discuss any concerns and answer any questions you have. She had a cup of tea and took her time with me, it was lovely So yes It does sound like you were fobbed off a bit! xx

I had a right miserable bint at my first appt! went away crying as she scared me so much
Not sure what its like in ur area but here u dont get bloods taken until 12 wk scan x

She was a total miserable old cow I was so disappointed. Where I stay, you go to GP/Nurse and show them your PG test. They then send urine sample to lab to confirm (despite seeing the test!). You wait 48 hours, and phone back for results, where they make you an appt with the nurse. The nurse takes urine, blood pressure and gets you booked into see MW, who is only in on a thursday. She also checks any other health issues and things. Where I stay you should get your first appt anytime after 8 weeks, where I was told would get bloods, and booked in and stuff. But none of that happened. She just took my name and told me the hospital would phone me! xx

Aw flugel you poor love - sounds a bit rubbish
Esp as the first appt is quite exciting in anticipation. What makes miserable bats go in for these jobs? Favour for a friend? I'd have been so annoyed hearing that! FX you'll have a lovely appt next time
