~February & March Mummies and Babies~

Oh I see! Would you consider using formula for say around 2 weeks and in the mean time express to build up a reserve? Then you can feed her on your own milk without worrying about making up the formula?

Sorry I know I'm no help!

Guys how do you make your formula bottles up those of you formula feeding?

Hv said yesterday how we were doing it was fine but called today and said we were doin it all wrong. We are meant to make as go along so any bacteria is killed in hot water from powder. To do this boiling water must be left 30 mins to cool, add powder then cool for lo to drink. All good and well but if lo screaming I don't think waiting 45mins will help her. When out I have been told to take a flask to use same method and bottle of cold water and jug to cool it down. Seriously???

All I wanted was to bf in first place and lo would take to it and made my nipples bleed. So I have expressed for over two weeks but can't keep it up when husband back at work as takes 4-5hours of the day and I can't see I will manage this on my own. I have sobbed over the decision to put lo on formula and now sobbing over making up these bloody bottles.

We were putting cooled water in fridge, heating up and adding powder but as I say now been told we can't do it this way.

What shall I do? Xx:wall2:

We make his waters in bulk leave them at room temp on the side then add powder and warm them when he needs it. No way could I make it as I go because sometimes Harry will take a 3oz feed then half an hour later want another ounce which means a whole new bottle (we make 3oz waters at the mo). We did exactly the same for Jack and he was absolutely fine.

I'd just carry on doing what you're doing x

It is a great way to warm bottle DC but according to hv you are not allowed to warm bottles any more. I am so confused! Kind of proves my point.... If it was so bad to warm your bottle up why do so many manufactures sell bottle warmers?!

Rachel, I don't warm the bottle. I make the bottle up with water from the flask. I then cool the bottle in a jug of cold water. The water in the flask has come from the kettle and has already been cooled for 30 mins.

Honestly I don't listen to half the crap the hvs say now. I make my bottles for the next 24hrs with hot water, put in the fridge and warm when needed. It didn't hurt me or any of my friends or my nephew. Sorry but the wnt make it as i go and leave my child to scream for what feels like an eternity at the time. I know alot of people won't agree but Alfies thriving and im not leaving him to scream in the middle of the night work himself up Then sick up all his food because he's so worked up and be up for the next four hours. The bold school way is working just fine for us! X

I am breastfeeding but have been told so many different things by loads of different nurses and midwifes, I think you have to do whats best for you.

My little man just slept for 4 hours solid .... does anyone else's baby do this? he woke up this morning at 7.30 and didnt go to sleep again until 12.30 so I know he was tired. The midwife yesterday told me that I should wake him every 3 hours to feed, but surely if he is hungry he would wake himself up??

I agree with Vicky; you need to do what's best for you! I make fresh feeds with a flask and it works for us but I do have a very "good" baby who on the whole does feed on a schedule so I usually know when to start boiling the kettle etc...

Vicky my lo sleeps a lot and has done from first born. I don't wake her as I know she will wake when hungry, but at first I did try to wake her every 3/4 hours x

I agree that HVs, midwives etc tell us so many different things. You just need to find something that works.
In hospital they tried to make me feed her formula with a beaker to avoid breast/bottle confusion. Biggest load if crap ever! She just spat it all up! She has no problem finding her food via the breast or bottle now, when she's hungry she manages to get the milk!

Woohoooooo
Alfie stayed in his basket last night! Went down at 1030 Let me put him back down in it the 3 times he woke for feeds then wanted to get up at 930! I'd wait for him to drop off in my arms then put him down, he usually wakes but he didn't! He's was wrapped in my favourite cardigan all night but he can have it if it means he stays in his basket and actually sleeps!

So cute!!xxx

its no wonder we question ourselves when we are told so many different things.

Before I was pregnant I thought feeding a baby was relatively straight forward. It's actually the most stressful part!!

Formula I do - sma - boiled water straight into bottles and then add formula when needed an he has it at room temp x he doesn't mind room temp bottles xx

Ppl who express on top of bf? Do you express and then juS store until needed?? I started to express today to try stock pile so maybe have my mum babysit at end of month x
Advice on how often to try expressing? After feed?
Store in fridge 5 days max then freeze for 3months yeah?

I've put skyler in our bedroom and trying to see if we can have an evening together. The last few evenings have been really hard, I nearly posted yesterday bout how down I'm feeling but I didn't; I'm finding the constant whining and crying and screaming on an evening really tough going and then I feel really conflicted in myself as we tried sooo long and endured many losses that I should be enjoying every minute! So I suggested trying bath, bottle, bed tonight. And now i feel like a failure as a mother! Like im almost shoving her away? She had a whine when I put her in her basket but she is sleeping now. Deffo need a monitor tho now, gonna go out tomorrow and pick one up, what do you all suggest?

Hope you're all feeling a bit better than I am lol!

Diane your doing fabulous xx hold ur head high an your allowed an evening with hubby enjoy :D :hugs:

Dw I exclusively express, but they told me in hospital to express after a feed, you probably won't get much at first but you will get some!!! I think if I remember right they tell you to do the boob baby fed from first, then the other!
Just reminded me I need to express!!!
You can store in fridge for 5 days and I'm sure it's 6 months in the freezer, there is a link in here somewhere telling you!

I have a very unsettled baby again, he is struggling with all this bloody mucus! Horrid stuff! Xx

Diane you are doing amazing, don't ever feel down on yourself, it's hard bloody work! X

Diane, don't feel guilty about wanting evenings and time to yourself!! Plus it's good for Skyler that she's more settled. You're doing what's best for you all.

We have 2 monitors, one is:
http://m.johnlewis.com/mt/www.johnlewis.com/bt-baby-monitor-200/p231141259?un_jtt_v_pdp=yes

We've used it a few times now and the sound quality and range is very good. You can also talk to the baby (which I find has no benefit at this stage).

We also got a cheap video monitor off amazon so we could see her. There's an app you can download on your phone so you can watch her through that:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B006P7N2UC/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1363461436&sr=1-4&pi=SL75

We haven't used either much but they've been very good and clear when we have used them.

Xxx

diane I am having the same conflicting emotions, we tried for ages and I have friends who are still trying and I know how lucky I am to have my boy but I just want to be with hubby, I have never felt so clingy to him in the 10 years we have been together but now he is all I want and I feel bad because all I should want is my baby ... this mummy malarky is much harder then I ever imagined it to be and I am only on day 6!!!

Quote from my husband:

'Youre so lucky, for the next year you don't have to do anything!'

Pillock.
