Extending feeds

Feeding water was what we were talking about and is it safe so yes it was on subject. Nobody is being defensive but it isn't bad for them if you are giving the very tiny amount that doctors and hv's say is ok

Pos is right, title is extending feeds. And just because a HV or GP days its ok for one baby doesnt mean it is for another.

That is true but there are lots with a routine. And its the babies routining themselves

I based my advice on what op said - her lo wasnt in.pain, wasnt actually taking more milk,.just feeding more often and little. There are no set times for babies to feed,.they are all so different.
If the baby likes 3 oz every 3 hours, sounds quite normal for a baby at around 8 weeks.
I just dont see a need to.offer water to extend the feeds. I would be pissed off if someone offered me water if i was hingry lol

I wasn't saying it was okay for all - I uploaded the pic because knop asked me where I read it. Everyone should consult their own gp or hv - I did say that xxxx

^^WSS

It's no criticism. I agree that what baby is asking for seems reasonable at that age xx

But usually babies spit out the water and cry or they won't settle and u can tell that their hungry and offer milk which is what I had advised. Xxxx

I know that, I was using the giving water when constipated as an example that they wouldn't be allowed any water, even for that if it was harmful. I appreciate that not everyone will do it but I'm just pointing out that water in between feeds is fine. I gave my Lo half an oz sometimes tto extend her feeds from every 2 hrs to every 4 hrs. That was advised by a midwife and a hv and she is happy and it successfully extended her feeds

Sorry but I didnt disagree that there werent, just that many dont.
If its babys routining themselves then surely water shouldnt be offered and only milk as they demand it..

True Russell. Mila was happy with 1/2 oz of water x

This is how I see it. Newbie asked for advice, Russell gave it to the best of her knowledge she's not wrong in any way. She's saying what she's being told. Newbie can make her own decision now based on the knowledge that some ppl says its fine, other disagree. I have heard that 1-2oz of boiled water is fine. I've given it to Harry but again I was told I could and it was because he was instantly hungry. He stopped though and when he did I stopped the water. Can't remember who said it but 8 weeks is a growth spurt so you may just need to go with it and feed him. Please let's remember we are all entitled to our own opinion ladies :) xx

^^WSS not sure why you would want to extend the time between feeds at such a young age?

Well my LO is coming up for 8 weeks and I was advised to give it because he was over eating then that set him into a routine of feeding every couple hours 3oz here 2oz there and I was absoloutly shattered - I gave jackson 1 bottle 2oz water then fed him the 4oz when he was due and it settled him hack into a routine. My milk advises to and the HV says this was fine so that's why I personally offered it to him.

Xxxxx

I've read through all the posts and I'm not criticising anyone here but personally I wouldn't offer water to extend feed times. Current advice is to feed on demand. Babies don't over feed. They take what they need to grow and survive. By giving water in place of milk you could cause his weight gain to slow as it has no nutrition for him. I was told babies don't need water between feeds unless constipation is an issue. I only ever had that problem once. I have only been offering Mia water since starting her on food.
It's your baby and your choice but my baby used to feed every two hours taking about 3oz and eventually they do go longer but remember at 8 weeks their tummies are tiny and can't handle large volumes of milk that's why they feed often.

No one said she couldnt, some just dobt understand the reasoning. If you find PF so frustrating then maybe your in the wrong place, I think I speak for many members when I say that its not like that at all

It's actually nhs advice to give ff fed babies water between feeds, it doesn't specify what is 'warm weather' and doesn't suggest it routinely in case the information is misinterpreted (nanny state) an oz or two day won't hurt a baby providing its not replacing milk feeds. If it was dangerous it wouldn't be recommended in warm weather, a couple of oz of water in a day is not the same as adding extra water to every feed which could upset the electrolyte balance... I don't get the impression that's what anyone here is doing though!

Calm yourself down, mums came on, offered advice and it was actually u that got defensive, not Russell or newbie.

It's an ADVICE forum and discussion forum! Your actually being really rude.

I dont think anyone disagrees that babies are different but RM' situation is say very different from op's so.she was given different advice. There is no.point arguing whats right and whats wrong, each.situation is different. And given what was written in the post, it didnt seem like any water was needed.
At that age it can fill their tummy while what they need is milk. If the.baby isnt in pain,.gaining well etc, not dehydrated, constipated, why give water.
I just havent found any NHS advice on giving water just because so.i was puzzled, esp at 8 weeks. I guess the way it was put on the tin wasnt a reccomendation,.it said you can?

I wouldn't offer anything other than milk unless it was for constipation rather than extending feeds. Your fighting a loosing battle because lo will be wanting to feed more and for longer but with bigger spaces between as the weeks go on so if your replacing milk with water lo will eventually still need the milk!! Hope that makes sense!

Babies are very clever and feed to suit themselves whether it stays the same for weeks then changes or changes day to day, they do it because they need the milk! They are growing, developing and having spurts so they need all the goodness in the milk. Water has nothing a baby needs....

It will ease over the next few weeks but I really think at 8 weeks you should still feed on demand so lo get what he needs when he needs it, not delayed x
