for those of you who have had an epidural.. what was your recovery time, like until you could get out of bed and go for a shower etc? and how long did they keep you in hospital etc?

with my son i had him at 10.20 and i was out of bed the next morning going for a bath and with my daughter i had the spinal for the c section and i had her at 10pm and i wa got out of bed qt 7.30 am to go for a shower i was in 2 days with my son and longer with my daughter dut to complications not caused by the epidural

i wanted to ask this question, so i look forward to reading the replies. The recovery time and being mobile again is the only thing that concerns me with regards to an epidural.

i was wondering this as well

can you literally not move after an epidural???

u can move hun but there is no way u can walk as u are numb from the waist down

oh no does that mean you have to use a bed pan to wee or do they give you a catheter?

i had a bed pan with kieron and a catherta with Hannah but she was a c section

:( that doesnt sound very nice at all :(

i think im gonna try and use gas and air like i did last time ..

I had an epidural. I has it at about 4am and had Jake at 5.45. In that time I had a cathita (sp) and pood while pushing. I went upto the ward at lunchtime and was told I'd need to ask a mw to assist me to walk to the loo the first time i needed it. It was about 3pm I needed a wee and got the mw to take me to the loo but tbh I didnt need her there, I could walk fine (a bit john wayne stylee tho  )

I had an epidural which was topped up with a spinal Ella was born at 7 15pm and I was fully mobile when I woke up the next morning. I had a catheter and that stopped me moving more cos they attached the bag to the bed!

I had feeling back and could move my legs by about 11pm ish I would say.

I had epidural about 1pm... had Ellie at 6:16pm. I had to get hubby to help me in and out of the shower and that was about 9pm, couldnt walk until morning and then i felt very weak and wobbly. I had an 'in out' cathetor while in labour but went myself after the birth.

I had an epidural, but I could completely feel my legs and move about and change positions on the bed. I was out of bed and shuffling about an hour after delivery and I was showered by three hours after.

I was up and aboutthe same day but was so sore then I was bend over for a good two days.
They struggled to get him out and I lost quite a lot of blood so maybe this is why I took longer to start recovering.

i had an epidural at 10pm wednesday with a top up at midnight

by the time i had connor at 3.25am thursday i could feel my legs but not the contractions

the catheter was taken out as soon as i'd given birth and i was up and about and showering by 5am, albeit very wobbly. i'd regained all feeling but just felt shaky.

staff wanted me to spend thursday night in hospital but i was desperate to go home and eventually left by 7pm on thursday.

I ended up having a spinal for forceps delivery when I couldnt get bubs out after 2 and 1/2 hours pushing, i had it around 10pm, could feel my knees by 12 when we were moved to the ward and regained feeling in my feet sometime overnight. I didnt have a catheter and was helped to the loo for a wee about 6.30 am. I got a shower later that morning when OH came in to mind the baby. I was dreading feeling sweaty and manky if i couldnt shower straight away but i hardly noticed! :? I think I was too tired and sore to care too much at the time, but it was nice when i did eventually get clean!
I had wanted a drug free labour and managed it up till then, i think you just have to keep an open mind, good luck!

Id been in labout for nearly 3 days when they finally gave me an epi. It wasnt what i expected. It def wasnt a nice experience putting it in but i wont go into that coz i dont wanna scare you and they had problems getting mine in so thats why.

You can still feel all parts of your body you just cant feel the contractions...which is great especially when youve been having beasty contractions for over 24hrs!

When id had my baby they lifted me to another bed so i was guessing i wouldnt be able to walk although i never tried! It wasnt long until they were encouraging me to walk to the toilet. I felt a bit wobbly and very very stiff but it wasnt too bad. I was walking round like john wayne for about 4 days! woddled more than when i was pregnant! :rotfl: If all is well you'd be able to go within 12 hours i would of thought.
